Being Obese Is Better Than Being Underweight

Modern society is obsessed with weight: everyone longs to be skinny, and obesity is demonized. But while being overweight does carry with it health risks, a new study suggests that being underweight is far more dangerous than being obese. In fact, the study, carried out at University of California Davis School of Medicine, shows that it is far more dangerous to be assessed as “underweight” than it is to be assessed even as “severely obese”. Prof. Anthony Jerant, one of the researchers, explains:

No Internet on Monday (read)

20120708-193013.jpg

July 9 might be “Internet doomsday” for PC and Mac users who haven’t taken steps to make sure their systems are not infected with what’s being called DNSChanger malware.

That’s right: Your Internet connection may not work that day because the safety net now in place from the FBI against the malware will be removed then, and if your computer is infected, you won’t be able to get to the Internet.

Let’s back up a minute to give you some quick background. Last fall, the FBI arrested six Estonian nationals who were charged with using malware and rogue DNS servers to hijack millions of computers worldwide. Read entire article

Oh God They’re Actually Making the Galaxy Note Bigger?

You already thought Samsung’s Galaxy Note was too big, right? Suitable only for use by elephants? Well rumor has it that the plan is to make it even bigger.

Currently the Note features a mere 5.3 inches of screen on the diagonal. According to MK Business that is not enough for Samsung. Instead, MK Business suggests that the company is planning to launch an update, called the Note II, in October with a 5.5-inch screen. They also suggest that it might feature a quad-core processor and 12-megapixel camera.

Whatever. The important thing to take on board here is that the rumor suggests that the current Note isn’t big enough. What. The. Hell? The thing barely fits in a pocket as it is. Make it any bigger and you’ll need a wheelbarrow to transport the thing.

Of course, the rumor might be complete nonsense—and here’s hoping it is—but if it’s not, then get your hands limbered up for some extreme stretching. [MK Business via Phandroid via Verge]

Scientists Observe the Mysterious Hidden Structure of the Universe for the First Time Ever

In 1933, Fritz Zwicky—a Swiss astronomer working at CalTech—had an amazing revelation. He realized that the amount of matter that we can see through our telescopes doesnt match the behavior of the Universe. There had to be something else that we couldnt see. Something that accounts for an astonishing 83 percent of all existing matter but is invisible to us.Or it was. Now, for the first time in history, a team of astronomers has observed these hidden tendrils that extend everywhere. Dark matter, the mysterious substance that appears to give the Universe its structure, has finally been revealed.

Could Ovary Transplants Defy the Female Body Clock?

Women may be able to have babies later in life thanks to ovary transplants. A handful of women worldwide have undergone the experimental procedure and had babies after menopause. Did science just reset how we think about the female body clock?

The idea is that women could have ovary tissue removed and frozen while they’re still fertile, and then have the tissue grafted back on later in life. That sounds crazy, but as the Daily Telegraph reports, 28 women worldwide have undergone the procedure and had babies after their ovaries stop working. Besides allowing women to have babies much later in life, the procedure could offset other effects of menopause like the increased risk of osteoporosis, heart disease, and cancer.

Obviously, the procedure is far from reaching any kind of mainstream adoption, and it’s controversial for all of its potential life and health benefits. Good or bad, though, what’s clear is that a procedure like this would only benefit the very few people who could afford it. [Daily Telegraph]
