Dear Politicians, Stop Supporting Laws You Don’t Even Understand

Another bill which would have violated the civil liberties of many—Hawaii’s H.B. 2288 Internet Dossier bill—has been pulled off the table following public outrage. And for good reason; the law would have tracked every website Hawaiians visited, and liked that browsing history to a name and address. It opened the door to profound first and fourth amendment violations. But worst of all, it was born out of ignorance. That’s not okay.

We’ve spent the last several months watching politicians endorse then quickly renounce internet-related bills like SOPA, PIPA, and now this. And in that time it’s become increasingly evident that many of those supporting the legislation didn’t do so out of some Orwellian drive to control the masses. They just didn’t get what it was they were trying to protect.

Simply put, politicians need to stop endorsing legislation that they don’t understand. Or even worse, don’t even try to.

Newt Gingrichs Fantasy Moon Base Is Illegal

Not only is Newts plan for lunar statehood completely insane—its also against the law! Not just any law, but space law, the most powerful of all laws, because it comes from the sky. Sorry, Newt.BuzzFeed points out that Gingrichs plan for an emphatically American moon colony and resultant 51st Moon State violates the Outer Space Treaty of 1967, which was pitched by the USSR, UK, and USA. Back then, the worry was putting nukes on the moon pointed at Moscow and/or Washington. Fast forward several decades, and its spoiling Candidate Gingrichs low-gravity wet dream. click below to read more

“The Most Amazing Highest Resolution Image of Earth Ever,” Says NASA

NASA has released a new Blue Marble image, showing the United States of America. According to them, its the “most amazing, highest resolution image of Earth ever.” Blue Marble 2012 bests the 2010 edition and the original one.The original one—the default background image in the iPhone—was 2048 x 2048 and was made combining different images. The 2010 edition was created with data from NASAs Terra satellite. But Blue Marble 2012 uses the latest data from NASAs newest Earth-observing satellite: Suomi NPP. Its made from several passes taken on January 4, 2012 using the satellites Visible Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite instrument VIIRS.

Process This Negative With Your Brain

Here’s something that’ll blow your mind (sorry that it’s an ad): stare at the colored dots on this girl’s nose for 30 seconds, then quickly look at a white wall or ceiling (or anything pure white) and start blinking rapidly. Congratulations, you just processed a negative with your brain!

Teacher and educator reactions to Apple’s iBooks 2, iBooks Author, and iTunes U | iMore

At Apple’s education event they announced two initiatives: iBooks 2 and iBooks Author designed to bring textbooks into the digital age, and an all new iTunes U to create and share lesson plans, and follow and complete course work. As education initiatives from publicly traded companies go, they’re big and bold — but they’re also just the beginning. There will be struggles and successes, breakthroughs and missteps. And while many of us here at iMore and Mobile Nations could speak about the implications from purely technical and business standpoints, we’re lucky to have several teachers and educators, past and present, on staff who were kind enough to share their thoughts on Apple’s new initiatives and how they impact what matters most — our kids in the classroom.

Apple announces free iBooks Author app for OS X, allows users to publish books to the App Store — Engadget

We’re here at Apple’s education-themed event at the Guggenheim museum in New York City, and the company’s just followed up its long-awaited textbook announcement with something unexpected: iBooks Author, a free OS X program for creating books. The intent is really for teachers and other educators to produce educational materials, but Apple says the format can apply to any genre. Aside from the free part, the real story here is ease of use, with the ability to drag and drop photos, videos and even Microsoft Word files into various templates. If you use Apple’s own suite of office apps, in particular, you can drag and drop a Keynote presentation into the doc, and it’ll live on as an interactive widget. (You can whip up other widgets, too, though you’ll need to know Javascript or HTML.) Moving beyond the main text, authors can also arrange glossaries by highlighting and clicking words, and clicking again to add a definition. In a surprise move, Apple also said authors can publish straight to the store, though we’re waiting for clarification that textbook writers and other scribes are actually exempt from Cupertino’s notorious App Store approval process. In any case, the app is available today in the App Store so by all means, get cracking on that sci-fi glossary you never knew you wanted.
