“Facebook Messenger” launched: dedicated messaging app | It’s All Tech

Earlier today, Facebook announced Facebook Messenger, an Android and iOS app that allows users to send messages and texts using the social network. The app is focused around real-time communication and simplifying sending messages to groups of people.

The app grabs contacts from both your phone and your Facebook friends list. It is considered an “extension of Facebook messages,” meaning all of your conversations are in one place. Facebook Messenger allows you to send messages to groups of people and add your location if you’d like.

The app is available on both the iOS App Store and the Android Market beginning today.

Facebook’s New Messenger App Aims to Kill SMS, BBM, and Everything Else

AIM’s downfall owes largely to the ubiquity of Facebook chat. And now, the company’s going after the mobile crown—texting. Facebook Messenger will do text conversations, privately share your location, and beam around photos. To all of your friends.

Full sizeThe dedicated Messenger app will be separate from the main Facebook app for iOS and Android, offering a one-click jump into group or individual messaging. If your pal’s on Facebook (which they almost certainly are), they’ll get your message in their FB inbox. If they’re not, or don’t have Messenger installed, you can send your missive via SMS instead, without either of you noticing a difference. Chat room-style conversations will be available, a la BBM, with room topics for easy sorting. If you want to sling your coordinates to a pal, you’ll be able to send them a drop pin of your location on a map. Enjoying the pizza you’re eating at that location? Share a photo too. All of this will be push notification-enabled as well—meaning you’ve got a hell of a powerful, consolidated communications toolkit in your pocket, and an actual reason to consider replacing your phone’s default messaging app.

Pegatron to ship iPhone 5 in September

Apple manufacturing partner Pegatron will begin shipping the iPhone 5 in September, DigiTimes reported on Wednesday. Pegatron will join Foxconn as a manufacturer for the phone and has secured an order for 10 million units, according to the report. In July, Taiwan Economic News also reported that Pegatron had inked a deal with Apple to manufacture the iPad 3, although that device may be delayed due to component shortages. The most recent rumors around the iPhone 5 speculate that the update is bigger than initially expected and the phone will be thinner, lighter and more powerful. Early rumors had suggested that Apple was launching an “iPhone 4S” that would offer a minor update to the current iPhone 4 model.

Police Now Trying to Defuse Bomb Strapped to Teenage Girl’s Neck [Updated]

These three worried men are members of the Australian police’s bomb squad. Right now, they are trying to defuse a bomb that an intruder strapped to the neck of an 18 year old girl in Mosman, a district of Sydney.

The girl, who belongs to a very rich family in Sydney, can’t move and can’t remove the collar bomb in any way. If she does, the device can go off.

According to the latest report, the police are not confirming the rumor that the teenage girl is the victim of some extortion attempt. The only thing they know is that the girl is “extremely calm” after the intruder broke into her house and strapped the bomb to her neck.

NSW Assistant Police Commissioner Mark Murdoch says that the situation is a “”very serious and sensitive matter” and they are “still treating the suspicious package as live.” [Herald Sun, Telegraph via Atlantic Wire; Photo credit: Ryan Pierse/Getty]

Update: Australian police are now reporting that the bomb squad has successfully freed the girl, and that she is safe and unharmed.

Less certain at this time, though, is what exactly had been strapped to her neck—experts are examining the contraption now—and who put it there. The ordeal lasted eight hours in all; hopefully a full resolution won’t take much longer. [Herald Sun, Telegraph via Atlantic Wire; Globe and Mail; Photo credit: Ryan Pierse/Getty]

Apple rumored to be prepping imminent iTunes Replay launch

Apple is preparing to launch a new service that will allow iTunes users to re-download previously purchased music, movies and TV shows for free, AppAdvice reports. The service may also support some streaming functionality according to the report, though such functionality may be limited. Currently, iTunes users who lose content from their libraries are forced to either purchase the content again or essentially beg and plead with Apple customer service until they agree to assist with free content restoration. This ridiculous practice may soon come to an end, should the report be accurate. AppAdvice claims to have confirmed the imminent launch of the iTunes Reply service with multiple sources, and such an offering has rumored to have been in the works from Apple for quite some time. According to the report, we can expect iTunes Replay to “go public in the coming weeks.”
