Spectacular Underwater Bedroom in Maldives – My Modern Metropolis

Sleeping underwater amongst marine life is something many of us could only daydream about. For some lucky travelers, this dream has now turned into a reality. A little over five years ago, Conrad Maldives Rangali Island opened the very first undersea restaurant. To celebrate their anniversary, the restaurant offered guests the chance to not only eat under the sea, but sleep under it as well. The 12-seat restaurant, which sits 16 feet below sea level of the Indian Ocean, was converted into a private bedroom suite for two, complete with a private champagne dinner and breakfast in bed. The view of the vibrant coral reef that surrounds the encased clear glass is utterly breathtaking. The rest of the resort, which is above water, isnt too shabby either. The Maldives hotel boasts 50 luxurious water villas, 79 exotic beach villas and 21 fabulous spa water villas with private treatment rooms. Stunning living areas are arranged around courtyards with a fountain, while huge outdoor garden-bathrooms offer a taste of the tropics, enormous glass doors substitute for walls and ingenious landscaping ensures total seclusion.

Nine states subpoena Sprint over opposition to AT&Ts T-Mobile acquisition

Sprint has received subpoenas from Arizona, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Minnesota, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas and Washington regarding its opposition of AT&T’s planned $39 billion T-Mobile USA acquisition, Reuters reported on Tuesday. The U.S. Department of Justice’s antitrust division also issued a subpoena. Sprint has been a staunch opponent of the deal and its CEO Dan Hesse has said the acquisition will “stifle innovation” in the U.S. wireless market. He also said that “clearly, purely, [Sprint wants] to win and block the merger,” when it was revealed that Hesse was working with 18 state regulators to block the acquisition. The deal is getting an in-depth investigation from both the Department of Justice and the Federal Communications Commission. On June 22nd, AT&T’s General Counsel Wayne Watts said that the acquisition was on schedule for approval in March of next year. An AT&T spokesperson told Reuters that AT&T also received the same nine subpoenas.

Cancer patient gets a new trachea grown from his own stem cells | DVICE

The stem cell research debate included lots of promises about how we would be able to get new body parts grown in a lab, and now its actually happening. Last month a Swedish cancer patient had this rather gross looking artificial trachea implanted, just after it had been grown in a lab using the mans own stem cells.Doctors created the trachea by first building a scaffold in the shape of his own diseased trachea, based on measurements taken from CAT scan images. Then they put the completed form in device called an InBreath Bioreactor, and bathed it in a solution that included stem cells taken from the patients own bone marrow. Two weeks later, the cells had multiplied and the trachea was fully formed, ready for implantation.Because it was made from the patients own cells, his body is unlikely to reject the new part, eliminating any need for dangerous immunosuppressant drugs. Researchers admit that a trachea is a relatively easy first step, and that bioengineering things like lungs and kidneys will be far more difficult. The potential possibilities of this technology are pretty mind-boggling. Perhaps one day we will get our limbs and organs scanned when we are young and healthy, just in case we need a few replacement parts a few decades down the road.

How Did a Stun Gun Get Onto a JetBlue Flight?

You would think that with a responsible organization like the TSA running airport security that nothing that shouldnt get on a plane would be on a plane. HAHA. Yeah right. Those ass-grabbers just let a stun gun on a plane. The stun gun was discovered in the seat pocket on a JetBlue flight from Boston to New Jersey after it had already landed. The crew was cleaning the plane when someone noticed something tucked into the back of the seat. No one knows who it belongs to, how it evaded TSA security and why it was still on the plane after it landed. Port Authority authorities say theres no indication that the weapon was ever fired and has placed the investigation into the hands of the TSA and FBI. Full sizeSo how did a stun gun get onto the airplane? I think the answer is obvious, its the sucktitude of the TSA. This sort of thing happens to them! Remember, the TSA once let a real flipping gun board a plane. They search kids after the fact. Put stolen iPads down their pants. After how many more incidents of ineptitude do we stop giving the TSA a pass?

Why I Wont Sign Another Cell Phone Contract

Americans have a love-hate relationship with cell phone contracts. We love that signing a two-year contract takes $200 to $300 off the price of our new smartphone, but we hate that we are locked in to a carrier for two years and cannot get any more cheap phones. Well, I’m ending this bad relationship today – well as soon as my current contract expires. Here’s why I’m paying full price for smartphones from now on.

Apple patent apps describe ‘smart’ pens for notetaking and long-distance doodling — Engadget

Apple’s knack for filing patent applications has struck again, offering a pair of digital pens that could become a competitive one-up for HTC’s Scribe pen. Both filed apps revealed by the USPTO involve styli for iOS displays, but if you’re imagining a magical item that helps (or hinders) your typing, this is another ball of wax. The first stylus is appropriately called “stylus for touch sensitive devices” and includes a rechargeable battery that could be stored and charged by placing it in a dock embedded directly in the device. Curiously, the stylus is heated for “more consistent interaction between the capacitive-sensors in the computing device and the stylus,” which sounds mighty nice on a cold day. By allowing the user to easily write real notes and draw pictures, this patent turns out to be much more than just a different method of inputting text.

Next up is the “communicating stylus,” a digital pen equipped with accelerometers and wireless transmitters that send position data. This would enable it to be used for an iOS device without any physical contact or other accessories. In theory, you could take the stylus (shown after the break) across the room and still jot down notes or doodle on your iPad, even if it’s out of sight. Finally, “the greatest pointing device in the world” — o

iPhone 6, iPhone nano rumors trickling out | TiPb

Remember this morning when I mentioned that The Wall Street Journal iPhone 5 rumors lacked the usual wink-wink, nudge-nudge controlled leak flare? I asked for miracles, and the WSJ gives us Yukari Iwatani Kane. Writing alongside Lorraine Luk, Kane, who’s track record is excellent, adds:

A person briefed on Apple’s product plans said the company initially planned to launch its next iPhone this summer as it usually does, but the device wasn’t ready in time.

This apparently due to production and yield challenges still faced by Hon Hai/Foxxcon, which could result in iPhone 6 delays as well. And speaking of this next, next generation handset:

People briefed on Apple’s plans said the company is planning a major iPhone revamp then, with one person saying the company has been experimenting with features such as a new way of charging the phone.

Let’s not forget the iPhone nano, which TiPb previously heard might be near completion and simply waiting on a launch date:

Apple has also been working on a less-expensive phone with new features such as an edge-to-edge screen, according to this person.

Should make for an interesting fall event…

Coca-Cola’s green billboard consumes carbon dioxide like so much sugary soda — Engadget

Sure, we’ve seen plenty of cool billboard features over the years, from facial recognition to interactive Pong games, but few have managed the dual feat of promoting a popular soft drink and making the world a slightly greener place. All of that fuzzy area you see surrounding the silhouette of the Coke bottle in the above 60 by 60 foot billboard is made up of a number of Fukien tea plants, each of which can soak up around 13 pounds of carbon dioxide per year, for a combined total of 46,800 pounds. The plants are housed in pots made from recycled Coke bottles and are watered via a drip irrigation system. The billboard is the product of a partnership between Coca-Cola Philippines and the World Wildlife Fund. No word on when it might be greening up more skylines around the world. Press release below.

Why Apple’s iPhone 5 will be available on all U.S. carriers this year

It’s funny to think that until a few months ago, Apple’s iPhone was locked to a single carrier here in the U.S. And just like that, AT&T’s exclusivity agreement expired and Verizon Wireless starting selling the device. According to public statements from Verizon Wireless and Apple, there is no CDMA exclusive on the iPhone, though the device is still not available from any other CDMA provider in the world. But I think this will change later this year when Sprint and T-Mobile USA start retailing the iPhone 5. Hit the jump for my thoughts.

BGR exclusively reported in April that Apple has been testing a T-Mobile USA iPhone “4S” device, and while a test device doesn’t mean that the iPhone would definitely come to T-Mobile, with no exclusivity on the GSM or CDMA models the question would be why not? Why wouldn’t Apple bring its handset to the two remaining U.S. carriers and finally start to battle Android in the big leagues once and for all? Google tried a multi-carrier approach with the Nexus One and quickly failed, but Apple can and will do it successfully. One single device that will be practically identical on every major carrier in the U.S., and that single phone will be the best-selling smartphone on every carrier that sells it as it combats the introduction of gimmicky An
