Oregon Militia Leader Furious He Can’t Have Guns or Facebook in Jail

Ryan Bundy, son of Cliven Bundy and former armed militia cosplayer, is not having a very nice time in jail. According to a status report filed earlier this week, not only is he not allowed to hang out with his (also imprisoned) brother Ammon—the guards won’t even let him have his guns.

Why A German Pilot Escorted An American Bomber To Safety During World War II

i04do8qeulbbym1d70bxOnce in a while, you hear an old war story that restores your faith in humanity. Usually it involves a moment of quiet in the midst of chaos; some singing or the sharing of a few condiments. But how many of them take place in mid air?

This is the remarkable story of a crippled American bomber spared by a German fighter pilot. After the two planes’ pilots had a mid-air moment of understanding, it didn’t seem likely that they’d ever see one another again. Only they did, and became closer than brothers.

Here’s how it all went down. ”

Samsung Galaxy X foldable smartphone: Rollable OLED screen video | BGR

For years, Samsung  has teased fans with flexible and foldable smartphones and tablets, but the company is yet to released any commercial product that people can prod and poke and buy. Sure, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S6 both have “edge” versions with curved displays, and they’re gorgeous screens, but the curve isn’t a must-have feature in a smartphone. However, Samsung is working on a different type of foldable display, and that’s something to be excited about.

Rumors claim that a Galaxy X flagship smartphone will join the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note lines next year, sporting a flexible display. The technology is apparently already there, and Samsung demoed a rollable OLED screen in San Francisco at the SID 2016 event.

Craigslist Scams 2016: 2 new Craigslist scams to watch out for | BGR

Craigslist’s heyday may be behind it at this point, but millions of people still flock to the site in search of all sorts of discounted goods and services. And of course, Craigslist often delivers. The trouble with the site is and always has been weeding out the scams from the genuine deals, a task that’s more difficult now than it has ever been in the past. Scammers are lurking in every corner of the site, just waiting to take advantage of vulnerable people in search of bargains.

There are plenty of potential scams to watch out for, but two in particular were recently brought to our attention.

The first scam is a particularly awful one because it preys on people when they’re at their most vulnerable.

There is precious little question that moving is one of the most stressful life events for American families, and it can also be terribly expensive. Since Craigslist has a reputation of being home to individuals and businesses that provide services at deep discounts, it’s naturally among the first destinations people visit as they search for low-cost moving crews.

But as the old adage goes, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Find the right movers and you can potentially save plenty of money carting your belongings from your old residence to your new one. But find the wrong movers and you could end up like this family in Georgia, who lost $75,000 worth of furniture and other household items when movers packed up all their belongings and just took off.

Bottom line: buying or renting a new home is expensive and moving adds even more cost to the equation. But trying to skimp on your move instead of hiring a licensed and insured company can end up costing you far more money if it’s a scam.

Speaking of moving, the story above from earlier this month reminds us of another scam people are using Craigslist to perpetrate.

A Southern Indiana couple put their house up for sale back in February, but they were confused when people began showing up at their home and looking around the property unannounced. Well, it turns out that scammers took all of the photos and details from the family’s listing and put their house up for rent on Craigslist.

The updated three bedroom, two bathroom house was listed for rent at just $600, well below market rates. The scam stated that the homeowners would be gone for between three and four years on a mission trip out of the country and needless to say, the listing drew tremendous attention. All the listing asked for was the renter’s personal info and a security deposit to lock in the deal. The couple was made aware of the scam listing when someone interested in the rental messaged them on Facebook.

This is a particularly bad scam because if someone does end up falling for it, it could create some serious animosity between the victim and the homeowners even though they had nothing to do with it.

You Can Now Buy An Alien-Looking 3D-Printed Violin

A 3D-printed replica is nothing more than a plastic trinket if it doesn’t function as well as the original. But as revealed last year, a company called 3Dvarius has created the world’s first 3D-printed playable electric violin that sounds just as good as its wooden equivalent—and now you can finally buy one.

Its creator, Laurent Bernadac, and the rest of the team at 3Dvarius, have turned to Kickstarter with a $56,000+ crowdfunding campaign to help put the 3D-printed instrument into the hands of musicians around the world.

There’s a long list of rewards for anyone who chooses to back this project, but if you scroll down far enough, you’ll eventually come to the pledge levels that will get you an actual 3Dvarius later this year—for just over $7,000. That’s certainly on the pricier side of violins, even for electric models, but none look like an instrument from the future.

The 3Dvarius’ shape and design is also based on the revered Stradivarius, which can fetch millions of dollars at auction. So in a way, dropping over seven grand on a replica could be seen as a bargain if you’re having a hard time justifying the cost. Just don’t expect the Antiques Roadshow to get excited when you bring it in for an appraisal.

Bionic Eye Implant Restores Man’s Vision After 40 Years Of Blindness | BGR

John Jameson might not have believed in miracles a year ago, but breakthroughs in modern science have made certain that he does now. The Tatum, Texas man had been blind for more than 40 years after an aggressive infection ended up taking his vision. Jameson would eventually come to terms with his disability and make the best of his situation, but he now has a new outlook on life — literally — after a revolutionary surgery involving a bionic eye implant restored his vision earlier this year.

The rare procedure gained FDA approval in the United States only recently, and there are just a handful of doctors capable of performing the complex surgery. Jameson’s wife happened to learn of the surgery while researching, and she found one of the few doctors capable of performing the procedure in Shreveport, Louisiana.

“Well, my wife has been following it,” Jameson told Texas Standard. “It’s been in development for several years, and it now as FDA approval. There have been only a limited number in the United States. Dr. [Christopher] Shelby is the one who did the implant – he was chosen out of many many candidates to set up this team that’s doing this.”

Dr. Shelby’s WK Eye Institute is home to one of the few groups in the country capable of the complicated procedure. Shelby performed the surgery in April and after 40 years of darkness, Jameson miraculously regained his vision with the help of the freshly implanted bionic eye.

Jameson said he experienced some double vision at first that continues to impact his newly restored sight at times, but his vision grows clearer each day as his brain adjusts to the implant.

“When you’re a kid, you’d wake up for christmas morning, and you’d walk down and see the tree lights and the gifts and everything – the joy you get when that happens. And now that’s been happening to me for every day, because every day I wake up I can see more and more,” Jameson said. “When I wake up in the morning, I love to see nature waking up. It’s like a miracle.”

Portal router aims to deliver us from congested WiFi

What happens when former Qualcomm engineers decide to build a router of their own? You get something like Portal, an innocuous looking device that aims to speed up WiFI networks using technology never before seen in consumer routers. It supports 802.11AC WiFi, but it works on all six channels of the 5GHz spectrum, whereas today’s routers only work on two channels. That’s a big deal — it means Portal is well-suited to delivering fast WiFi in places like dense apartment buildings.
