Is Tech OCD Consuming Your Life?

Were “constantly confronting the onslaught of information, and our brains are trying to make patterns out of the randomness,” says TIMEs Joel Stein. Obsessively tagged MP3s, meticulous photo folders, whitewashed inboxes—are you too struggling to stay digitally neat?”We believe that if we just finish a list of every movie we want to see, we can finish that task,” continues Stein, despite the fact that his Netflix queue—like mine—is a bottomless pit of despair and futile cinematic ambitions. A stockpile of things I add for the millisecond burst of satisfaction I get from clicking on a French New Wave film, half-knowing Ill never actually get around to watching it, because its underneath 70 other discs Ill never watch either. So whats the solution? “We need a digital Zoloft, something that will force us to allow messiness into our digital lives.” Embrace a little clutter, Stein implores. Let that inbox fill up, as much as you might start grinding your teeth because of it. Clear out the DVR. Maybe dont spend 20 minutes tracking down hi-res album art for a torrented discography youll never listen to. Im half onboard—though the thought of all of my photos in one giant, uncategorized folder makes want to curl up with a bottle of whisky and several powerful tranquilizers. Nonetheless, Stein is sadly sure as hell right about this: “No woman will ever sleep with you because your music collection is sorted by genre, artist and the date each album was released.” [TIME]Shutterstock/Ana Blazic

Former Google, MTV engineers cook up IntoNow – Foursquare meets Shazam for TV fans | BGR | Boy Genius Report

If there’s one thing we love here in the good ol’ U. S. of A., it’s television — so it stands to reason that various companies have had a go at TV-based social networks and other trendy services that tie America’s love of television in with America’s love of social networks. To date, none have been overly successful, but that may soon change with the launch of a new iOS app called IntoNow. Comprised of engineers formerly with Google, MTV Networks and IDEO, Palo Alto-based IntoNow on Monday launched an app and network combination bearing the same name. After having played with it for a while this past weekend, we have to say we’re intrigued.Put into a single sentence, IntoNow is basically FourSquare for TV enthusiasts, but with Shazam-like technology that makes the check-in process a breeze. The app includes the company’s “SoundPrint” technology, which allows users to tap a button to record an audio sample of the program they are currently watching. The app uploads the sample to IntoNow’s servers and almost instantly identifies the show or movie currently being viewed. Once posted, users can chat with friends on IntoNow about the show or movie, share it on Facebook or Twitter, and even add it to their Netflix Instant or DVD queues. The technology monitors 130 broadcast stations in real-time, so it might not be able to identify shows on a public access station in Podunk, Iowa — but rest assured that it has all the big networks covered.IntoNow is available immediately in the App Store for free, and is compatible with the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.

Lunar Cubit: Gigantic Solar Pyramids to Power Abu Dhabi | Inhabitat – Green Design Will Save the World

Robert Flottemesch, Jen DeNike, Johanna Ballhaus, and Adrian P. De Luca, Land Art Generator Initiative, Lunar Cubit, solar power, green architecture, pyramids, renewable energy, sustainable energyThe proposal placed first in the Land Art Generator Initiative, a contest which asks designers to integrate art and interdisciplinary processes with the concept of renewable energy. Each proposed project must generate enough green energy to power thousands of homes, while also serving as an innovative public art installation.

Lunar Cubit consists of eight small glossy solar panel pyramids that surround a central large pyramid in a semi circle. The pyramids act as a lunar calendar, and the central pyramid is inversely illuminated according to the phases of the moon — meaning it is at full illumination with the new moon. The surrounding smaller pyramids act like the hands of a clock for the eight phases of the lunar calendar, illuminating in different combinations to indicate the waxing or waning of the moon. Each is outfitted with energy-efficient LED lights, of course.

By day, the pyramids function as solar energy-producing power plants. Each of the frameless solar panels is made of glass and amorphous silicon, and they’re able to produce enough renewable energy to power 250 homes. That may not seem as productive as a solar power farm, yet it is truly exceptional considering it is also a public art installation. If actually constructed, Lunar Cubit would pay back its cost of construction in five years, through the megawatt-hours of clean renewable energy that it produces.

Lunar Cubit, designed by Robert Flottemesch, Jen DeNike, Johanna Ballhaus, and Adrian P. De Luca, combines the power of the moon, ancient measurement (it is proportional to the Great Pyramid of Cheops in Giza), and renewable energy. The Land Art Generator Initiative is currently seeking partnership to start construction, and if completed, it is anticipated to become a tourist destination in itself.

Ehrlich Architects Wins Award to Design New Parliament Building in UAE | Inhabitat – Green Design Will Save the World

FNC Parliament, ehrlich architects, desert architecture, UAE, abu dhabi, solar passive designEhrlich Architects came in ahead of Foster + Partners, Massimiliano Fuksas Architects, and Zaha Hadid Architects in Phase 2 of the design competition to win the FNC Parliament project. The stunning design is centered around a 100-meter dome structure with a “flower-of-the-desert” design to cover the main assembly building constructed from white marble. Light will filter through the screen of the dome onto the building and courtyard below creating a micro-climate and increasing energy efficiency of the building. FNC’s new parliament complex is located right on the water and at night, the assembly hall will glow dramatically at night.Ehrlich’s design will “will balance Islamic Heritage with U.A.E.’s global contemporary aspirations, where modernity and tradition are in harmonious balance,” said Design Principal, Steven Ehrlich, FAIA, RIBA. Sustainability and energy efficiency are at the core of the design and the project is expected to achieve a 5 Pearl Rating in the Estidama Initiative, a sustainable design program led by the emirate of Abu Dhabi (estidama means sustainability in Arabic).

‘Fire Department’ iPhone App Could Save Heart Attack Victims | Inhabitat – Green Design Will Save the World

fire department iphone app, fire department smartphone app, san ramon valley fire department, life saving smartphone appWhen you first launch the app, it asks if you’re trained in CPR and would be willing to help a stranger in an emergency. Once you accept this, the application uses the iPhone’s GPS technology to find your location. The next time a 911 dispatcher receives a call that an emergency is happening near you, you receive a notification saying where help is needed and where the closest automated external defibrillator (AED) is located.“Providing actionable, real-time information during a sudden cardiac arrest emergency, including mapping the victim and rescuer locations, along with the nearest AED locations is the quintessential use of GPS technology on a mobile phone today,” San Ramon Fire Chief Richard Price said in a press release. The application, which has existed as a less sophisticated version for some time, is being developed by interns at Northern Kentucky University’s Center for Applied Informatics, and Workday is helping to develop the app for other platforms. The app could work very well in San Ramon, mainly because the city’s fire department is more advanced than many others across the country. The department has a very detailed list of AED locations, like “at the Customer Service counter in Home Depot,” while many regions …….

The Only Sci-Fi Movie You Need to Watch for the Rest of Your Life

Let me share something special with you. This is Robot, a Bollywood action flick. Its like Terminator, The Matrix, and Transformers combined, but better. Or, as Jesus summarized, “an orgy of absurdity that not even Michael Bay can match.”Its definitely absurd. More absurd than it looked in the trailer, which was already pretty absurd. And for some reason, this compilation clip is dubbed in Russian, but I guess I wouldnt want it any other way. Update: A reader writes in with two important facts. 1 Robot is, in fact, a Kollywood movie Tamil, whereas Bollywood is Hindi and 2 it was the most expensive Indian movie ever made. Of course it was!
