Rally to restore sanity

“I’m mad as hell, and I’m not going to take it anymore!”

Who among us has not wanted to open their window and shout that at the top of their lungs?

Seriously, who?

Because we’re looking for those people. We’re looking for the people who think shouting is annoying, counterproductive, and terrible for your throat; who feel that the loudest voices shouldn’t be the only ones that get heard; and who believe that the only time it’s appropriate to draw a Hitler mustache on someone is when that person is actually Hitler. Or Charlie Chaplin in certain roles.

Are you one of those people? Excellent. Then we’d like you to join us in Washington, DC on October 30 — a date of no significance whatsoever — at the Daily Show’s “Rally to Restore Sanity.”

Ours is a rally for the people who’ve been too busy to go to rallies, who actually have lives and families and jobs (or are looking for jobs) — not so much the Silent Majority as the Busy Majority. If we had to sum up the political view of our participants in a single sentence… we couldn’t. That’s sort of the point.

Think of our event as Woodstock, but with the nudity and drugs replaced by respectful disagreement; the Million Man March, only a lot smaller, and a bit less of a sausage fest; or the Gathering of the Juggalos, but instead of throwing our feces at Tila Tequila, we’ll be actively *not* throwing our feces at Tila Tequila. Join us in the shadow of the Washington Monument. And bring your indoor voice. Or don’t. If you’d rather stay home, go to work, or drive your kids to soccer practice… Actually, please come anyway. Ask the sitter if she can stay a few extra hours, just this once. We’ll make it worth your while.

Watch Jon’s call-to-reasonableness on The Daily Show. Keep checking back for updates and rally information.

iphone 4 metal back replaces fragile glass

I always have wished that Apple never moved away from the nice brushed aluminum back of the original iPhone. I never really cared to for the fingerprint magnet backs on the 3G/3GS and 4. And with all the buzz about iPhone 4’s and their easily damaged back glass, it’s no wonder people are looking for creative solutions, like this replacement back.

iphone_4_metal_back_1

This simple beveled metal back doesn’t just cover up the back glass of your precious iPhone 4, it replaces it. It installs on your iPhone with just a little bit of careful disassembly, giving it a durable brushed metal look, complete with Apple logo and iPhone branding.

The beveled meta back sells for just $12 (USD) and can be found over at Cellular Natiowide Network. (Note: Their site appears to be straining under the weight of all the publicity, so you may have want to wait a few days and try again – but before Apple’s lawyers go after these guys.)

10 Fresh Blogger Templates for Any Application [PICS]

RePost from Mashable: http://mashable.com/2010/10/17/fresh-blogger-templates/#10-Old-SkoolBoard

I’ll be the first to admit that Blogger isn’t the sexiest publishing platform out there. But if you like to keep all your logins under one Google-powered roof, and you’re not afraid of a little XML template tweaking now and again, Blogger can be one of the most versatile content dashboards available.

The first rule of Blogger: Don’t use any of the built-in themes. And searching the web aimlessly will likely turn up a big pile of design faux pas. Whether you’re looking to use Blogger for business or pleasure, these versatile themes should satisfy even the most discriminating blog design connoisseur.

Operation Guard Shack: Historic Takedown in Puerto Rico

10/06/10

Early this morning the FBI launched a massive public corruption takedown in San Juan, Puerto Rico, as our agents fanned out across the island to begin arresting 133 subjects—the majority of them police officers.

In what is likely the largest police corruption case in the FBI’s history, nearly 1,000 Bureau personnel from 50 of our 56 field offices were in San Juan for the takedown.

By late morning, as U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, U.S. Attorney for Puerto Rico Rosa Rodriguez-Velez, and FBI officials were announcing the operation at a press conference in Washington, members of our Hostage Rescue Team (HRT) and SWAT operators had already arrested 129 subjects in a seamless and successful operation.

Those charged with drug trafficking crimes and the use of a firearm in the commission of those crimes include 61 officers from the Puerto Rico Police Department, 16 officers from other municipal police departments, a dozen Puerto Rico Department of Corrections officers, members of the National Guard, and two U.S. Army soldiers. They all face a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.

“The actions of these individuals proved they were not worthy of the title of public servant,” said Luis Fraticelli, special agent in charge of our San Juan office. “They violated the public’s trust by using their authority for personal gain.”

The case, dubbed Operation Guard Shack, began more than two years ago, when then-FBI Special Agent Jose Figueroa Sancha began an investigation into corrupt San Juan police officers.

One of our undercover agents posing as a dealer selling multiple kilos of cocaine put the word out that he needed security during drug deals. Many of those who responded were cops. They actively took part in the transactions by carrying weapons and patting down the drug buyers—who were actually FBI informants. For their protection efforts, the cops were paid between $500 and $4,000 for each drug deal. In all, more than $500,000 was paid in protection money.

Figueroa Sancha—now chief of the Puerto Rico Police Department—knew of the continuing investigation and said from the FBI command post this morning, “All the officers arrested during today’s takedown did not honor or value the significance of working for the Puerto Rico Police Department.”

The operation began at 3 a.m., when 65 tactical teams hit the streets. But the takedown represented the work of more than just HRT and SWAT. On hand were a range of Bureau personnel—crisis negotiators, evidence response team members, canines and their handlers, and some 80 medical personnel from first responders and nurses to a trauma surgeon and a veterinarian.

And none of those people or their equipment—including armored Humvees, helicopters, and 250 rental cars—would have been in place if not for the logistical experts who worked around the clock in the days leading up to the takedown.

“A lot of planning went into this,” Fraticelli said, “and a lot of very capable people ‘what if’d’ the operation in every conceivable way.”

“This case sends a powerful message,” said Special Agent Alex Zappe, who worked the investigation from the beginning. “Corruption among our public officials—especially police officers—cannot be tolerated.”

He May Be Homeless, But At Least He Has Facebook

He May Be Homeless, But At Least He Has FacebookThere’s something really wrong in the world if we can see scenes like this. I wonder if he’s checking his email, watching YouTube videos or playing Farmville in Facebook. This other one probably has better Wi-Fi signal than most people:

He May Be Homeless, But At Least He Has Facebook

That photograph was captured by reader Pablo Traverso at the UC Berkeley campus:

The homeless man I photographed has rigged up some speakers to a shopping cart, and seems to have some sort of lighting/solar panel rigged up atop of his cart. I’ve seen him around town a couple of times, and he’s always seems to be doing a laptop DJ routine (all techno music).

It seems to me like a Wi-Fi antenna to me. [Thanks Pablo Traverso for the second image!—Top image from Hardly Normal via Twitter]

American student finds GPS tracker stuck to car, FBI shows up to reclaim its ‘federal property’

By Tim Stevens posted Oct 8th 2010 at 8:16AM

American student finds GPS tracker stuck to car, FBI shows up to reclaim its 'federal property'Mechanics spot strange things stuck under cars all the time, but when 20-year-old Yasir Afifi’s ride was put up on lifts his shop found something that hadn’t been kicked up from the road: a cylindrical tube connected to a device with an antenna. An extremely paranoid person would think they’d found a bomb, but the truth isn’t much better. It was an FBI tracking device. Afifi posted pictures and his story on Reddit while a friend contemplated cunning things to do with it, sticking it to someone else’s car or selling it on Craigslist. They didn’t have long to ponder before long two “sneaky-looking” people were spotted outside his apartment. Afifi got in his car and drove off, only to be pulled over by FBI agents who demanded the device back, threatening “We’re going to make this much more difficult for you if you don’t cooperate.”

Now, we’ve already given our opinions on using GPS technology like this and, while it’s unknown whether these agents had a warrant to place this device, the 9th US Court of Appeals recently made one unnecessary for this sort of thing. The ACLU is working with Afifi to fight that ruling, and for now we’re hoping that he, who is an American with an Egyptian father, is currently able to hit the town without agents following his every move. However, at this point they may not need a tracker: one agent who retrieved the device took the time to list off his favorite restaurants and even congratulated him on his new job.

Trio Los Condes de Puerto Rico

Originally comprised of two Puerto Ricans and one Cuban, the Trio Los Condes was formed in 1959 in New York City and became one the leading exponents of romantic bolero music in Puerto Rico, Latin America and the United States. The trio’s founding members were Fernando Ramos, from Río Grande, Puerto Rico, on first guitar; Rafael Maldonado, from Arecibo, Puerto Rico, lead vocalist; and Ricardo Blanco, from Havana, Cuba, as second vocalist and second guitar.

Their first recording was an LP record on the Gema label in 1960, which included one of their biggest hit songs: “Querube”, written by the famous Puerto Rican songwriter, Pedro Flores. That song was typical of their repertory and helped the Trio gain widespread fame. Los Condes came into their own in the 1960’s but performe and recorded as late as the early 1990’s.

A short time later, in 1963, the Trio survived its first change when Blanco left. He was replaced by José Luis “Tato” Diaz, from Vega Baja, Puerto Rico. The next change came several years later, after working out of New York and touring many cities throughout the United States, the Trio met with such great success during a tour of Puerto Rico in 1966, they moved permanently to the island two years later.

While the Trio continued their string of highly successful recordings and live performances, other changes were in store. Ten years later, Julito Pérez replaced Diaz but rejoined the Trio in 1989.

One of the Trio’s theme songs, recorded in their later years, was Brujeria, written by the well known songwriter, Tite Curet Alonso, an excellent example of the style that made them famous. Over the course of their successful years, Trio Los Condes recorded well over 200 songs on more than 20 LP albums.
