Stop Bending the Apple Store’s iPhones, Idiots!

In the wake of the uproar that followed last week’s purported iPhone 6 Plus pliability problem, some people have apparently taken it upon themselves to go into Apple Stores and bend iPhones. And while it pains us that this even needs to be said, guys, please: Breaking private property doesn’t prove anything. Except that you’re an asshole.

The most notable case of bandit benders so far comes in the form of a couple of British teens, who tried to stick it to the man by breaking wildly expensive smartphones that they did not pay for. As the Daily Dot notes, in the five-minute video the pair posted online, the kids not only recorded themselves breaking thousands of dollars worth of hardware for all the internet to see, but they round it all off with a solid “I don’t even care to be honest, because it’s Apple’s fault.” Except that no, it’s not.

The Real Life of Uncle Sam

As a personification of the United States, Uncle Sam is at once beloved and detested. The insistent cartoon — clad in stars and stripes and bearing great semblance to Abraham Lincoln — was, and to some extent still is, lauded as the alpha hero of America. Making appearances in everything from wartime propaganda to insurance ads, he is the heralded patriotic emblem of our country. As such, he’s also been the scapegoat for our financial woes. Try making it through tax day without hearing “Uncle Sam took all my money!”But beyond his fictionalized grandeur, few realize that Uncle Sam was based on a real man who lived 200 years ago — a fairly unknown meat-packer from Massachusetts. An unlikely inspiration, his values and actions were far removed from those associated with his fictional counterpart.

Documentary shows how One Laptop Per Child has helped kids in Peru

The staff changes, massive layoffs and the shutdown of its entire Boston office over the years make the One Laptop Per Child program sound like a huge failure. But this documentary by filmmaker Michael Kleiman shows that OLPC really did change some of its recipients’ lives, particularly those who’ve never heard of computers and the internet before the organization gave them laptops of their own. The documentary, called WEB, looks at the OLPC rollout in the poor areas of Peru, showing kids typing on their small laptops in dingy classrooms and teaching their parents how to use Google underneath trees. It’s been shown in several film festivals before, but it’s now available for download from iTunes, Google Play, Amazon Instant Video, Xbox Video, Sony Entertainment Network and Vudu.

Consumer Reports Bend Test Pits iPhone 6 Plus Against the Competition

Sure, Apple’s only received nine reports of bent iPhones and we highly doubt you’ll have any reason to worry about your own, but do Apple’s new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus handle the pressure any better than competing models? Consumer Reports put that to the test today, pitting the new iPhones against other giant handsets including the Samsung Galaxy Note 3.

Using an Instron compression test machine to squash the devices, the publication added force in 10 pound increments until the phones were permanently bent. Surprisingly, the Galaxy Note 3 came out on top, withstanding an entire 150 pounds of force before giving out, while the iPhone 6 Plus took only 90 pounds. The LG G3 had a strong showing at 130 pounds, and the HTC One M8 and iPhone 6 came in last by withstanding just 70 pounds of pressure. Still, as the publication points out, even pressing down with 70 pounds requires quite a bit of effort: roughly the same as trying to break four full-size wooden pencils simultaneously. Don’t try it with your bare hands. [Consumer Reports]

Goat-inspired prosthetic leg will give rock climbers better footing

For all the neural-controlledbluetooth-enabled and sport-specific prosthetics humanity has designed over the years, one thing remains constant: most of of them are lousy for climbing rock faces. Design student Kai Lin learned this while researching artificial limbs in a prosthetic-design class at Pratt Institute — traditional leg prosthetics don’t have enough grip or articulation to facilitate effective climbing. Lin’s solution to the problem is almost elegant in its simplicity. He designed a prosthetic leg inspired by one of nature’s best rock climbers: the mountain goat.

Why a goat? Well, aside from the amazing YouTube videos one can find of the creaturesscaling near vertical rock faces, Lin found that the cupped surface of the goat’s hooves create natural suction on hard surfaces. Better still, the hard outer shell gives the animals stable footing on steep rocks. Inspired by the hoof, Lin created three prototype stilts to help him refine the footing for his prosthetic design, eventually settling on a mid-sized foot with a hoof-like sole.

Does it work? Unfortunately, we don’t know just yet. Lin is still in the design phase, and hasn’t reached the point where he’s comfortable producing a working prototype. When he does finish the design, he plans on calling the prosthetic Klippa — Swedish for “cliff.” You can check out the student’s design work at the Pratt Institute link at the source link below.

It’s just an opinion, get over it

SAT_B&WWhy do people believe that Everyone must agree with everything they say in order to have a conversation with them. More and more people are adopting this, with me or against me attitude. What’s wrong with having a different opinion. It doesn’t make me right and it doesn’t make you wrong. it’s just an opinion. I respect someone that has an opinion more than someone who’s just agreeing with mine, and by the way “because” it’s not a valid argument. Having an opinion is not a sin. Speaking up is not against the law. Being different is not a fault. We do live In a free speech society but please think before you speak. Just because you thought it, you don’t gave to say. Words HURT! What you say matters. How you say something is just as important as what you said. Tolerance is a virtue! Please don’t confuse ignorance with conviction. They are very different things. Look it up! [STR]

Leaked Windows 9 screenshots hint at a redesigned desktop

Slowly but surely, we’re starting to get a clearer idea of what the next version of Windows will look like. Microsoft already teased a classic-style Start Menu, while ZDNet’s usually-reliable Mary Jo Foley has reported that the Charms Bar might be removed. Today, we’re sifting through what might be the biggest single leak yet — a collection of 20 screenshots from the German sites ComputerBase and WinFuture. In these images, reportedly from the “Windows Technical Preview” expected to arrive this fall, we can see not just the Start Menu, but a refined Taskbar, with a new search icon located next to the Start button.Alongside the search button there’s another new icon — what appears to be a shortcut for the rumored virtual-desktop feature. Indeed, a few of the screenshots here show a pane along the bottom of the screen that you can use to toggle between different desktops. Finally, one of the screens includes the new notification center, which apparently lives in the System Tray in the lower-right corner. Based on the images we have here, though, it remains unclear how exactly these notifications will work.On that note, it’s worth a reminder that these images almost certainly don’t represent a final version of the software — again, not even the preview version has been released yet. In the meantime, we’ve asked Microsoft to confirm whether these screenshots are authentic, and will update this post if we learn more.
