Hackers Have Figured Out How to Steal Millions from ATMs

Federal regulators just alerted banks across the country of a very dangerous new skill ATM hackers have picked up. They can trick ATMs into spitting out unlimited amounts of cash, regardless of the customer’s balance. Not only that, but also schedule the illicit withdrawals for holidays and weekends, when the ATMs are extra flush.

We’ve heard of crazy ATM hackers before, but this really takes the cake. It’s a triple threat, really. The ability to skirt around daily ATM withdrawal limits is bad enough, since the hackers isn’t limited to $500 or whatever the limit is on any single account. But the fact that the hackers can now extract more than what’s in a customers account combined with the scheduling method means that any given ATM theft could now be an all out heist. That’s why the Secret Service is calling this strategy Unlimited Operations.

Steve Wozniak surprises girl with Mac delivery, happy girl freaks out

Steve Wozniak just sent this fun stunt caught on video a few years ago: Watch him deliver a Mac to Emma, a girl who freaks out when she realizes her idol is at the door carrying her new computer. As Emma’s father says in the video: “This is like having your lightbulbs delivered by Thomas Edison”. He’s totally right. Updated with Steve’s explanation.

The father tells the story:

A few years ago, Steve and Janet Wozniak came to town to help us have a little fun with our kid Emma. Emma’s dad met them around the back of the block to give them Emma’s new iMac, and then they drove back around and rang the doorbell to deliver it… and shocked the heck out of Emma and her sister and friends. Little sister Elizabeth got the iPod Touch as a “one more thing,” and Janet shot the video.

Steve’s known to be quite the practical joker, and it was very kind of him and Janet to spend the time to do this…and make a great memory for all of us.

Culebra Island, Puerto Rico : Playa Flamenco

Culebra Island, Puerto Rico : Beach Guide : Travel Channel

Many people fail to associate a Caribbean paradise with historic significance, assuming instead that it has always been a sandy, sun-drenched beach swathed in sunbathers and snorkelers. That’s part of the beauty of Puerto Rico’s Culebra Island. Yes, this island, situated 20 miles off the northeast coast, has beautiful beaches and plenty of sun, but it’s also an old pirate hideout loaded with virtually undisturbed treasures. Not to mention that in 1493 Christopher Columbus dropped by this tropical oasis during his second voyage, and in 1909 Theodore Roosevelt declared Culebra one of America’s first wildlife refuges.

When World War II erupted, the US Navy turned Culebra and the 23 other islands in the archipelago into the primary site for gunnery and bombing practice. This island remained a target until 1975, which turned out to be a good thing – the reefs and surrounding waters remained unscathed by boaters and divers and the beaches were unspoiled by large-scale tourism development.

Today Culebra is appealing for what it lacks. There are no luxury resorts, elegant restaurants, discos, movie theaters, casinos, museums or boutiques. There’s also no crime, hardly any traffic and few crowds (except during Semana Sancta – Holy Week – which precedes Easter).

What Culebra does offer is an unsullied and under-populated beach along with pristine waters filled with beautiful fish. There is also plenty of wildlife. The disconnected tracts of the Culebra National Wildlife Refuge, which total more than one-third of the islands’ area, are populated with terns, gulls, pelicans, boobies and several species of endangered turtle. And the natives – or culebrenses as they are known – as well as the expatriates provide plenty of the signature laid-back attitude that is so familiar in the Caribbean.

Microsoft releases Office for iPad, subscription required for editing docs

Rumors have been circulating for years that Microsoft was working on a version of Office for the iPad, with speculation getting so intense at one point that the company went out of its way to categorically deny it. Still, once Microsoft released Office for iPhone, an iPad version seemed more plausible; indeed, credible sources said it would arrive in the first half of this year. Turns out, there was something to all that scuttlebutt: Microsoft today announced Office for iPad, a trio of apps that bring Word, PowerPoint and Excel to tablets. Those should be showing up in the App Store shortly — around 11AM Pacific (2PM Eastern), to be exact.

As with the iPhone version, these apps are free to download, and you can view documents/give presentations without a paid subscription. As ever, you’ll need to sign in with a OneDrive or SharePoint account to retrieve your documents, or else have your stuff stored on the iPad itself. However, if you ever want to edit a doc or create something from scratch, you’ll need an Office 365 subscription (you can even use Microsoft’s cheaper Office 365 Personal plan when it launches later this spring). If you like, you can also sign up for a 30-day trial at Office.com. UPDATE: click here for link to app store

This Smart Attachment Makes Judge Dredd’s Lawgiver Gun a Reality

In the 2000 AD comics, anyone who had the balls to disarm the brutal Judge Dredd and attempt to use his Lawgiver pistol against him would be left flailing, with the weapon smart enough to know when it wasn’t being wielded by the lawman. It’s a concept that’s now set to become a reality thanks to the Sentinl Identilock. The brainchild of Omer Kiyani, the victim of an unsecured firearm shot to the face as a child, the device attaches to a handgun’s trigger, and is equipped with a fingerprint scanner for biometric authentication.

The original Apple reseller is closing its doors

If you paid $1,698 for an Apple II with 16K of RAM back in 1977, there’s a good chance you bought it from Team Electronics in Minneapolis. Now called FirstTech, the retailer has announced that it’ll shut down at the end of the month after 73 years in business, laying off 75 employees in the process. It first encountered Apple at the historic 1977 West Coast Computer Faire and expressed strong interest in the pre-production Apple II. Since it was a chain at the time, future Apple CEO Mike Markkula personally flew to Minnesota with the fifth production model and signed it up as the first ever US dealer. FirstTech stuck with Apple through better or worse over the next 37 years, but found it couldn’t compete with aggressive vendors and Apple’s own stores. Luckily, it seems to have kept a lot of crazy and valuable early items — to see some of them, check the video after the break.

BBC News – Is Ed Houben Europe’s most virile man?

In a farm house in north-western Germany, heated by a lively fire in a wood-burning stove, a bulky and bespectacled Dutchman – he freely admits he is a bit on the heavy side – makes his way upstairs to the baby’s room.

Ed Houben has come to see his daughter for the first time.

He talks gently to the six-week-old baby, and little Madita looks up at him. She is, he says, his 98th child.

“I am single. I have long wanted to have a child but I could never find the right man”

Kati; Mr Houben is a “charitable sperm donor”. He helps lesbian couples, single women and heterosexual couples with fertility problems to have children free of charge.

He started out in 2002 donating sperm to a sperm bank.

But his sperm donating career (he has a day job, by the way, as a tour guide) really hit its stride when the Netherlands, like many other European countries and Canada, banned anonymous sperm donation and he started offering his services for free on the internet.

Is This What Your Car’s Cockpit Will Look Like In 2025?

Audi says their Virtual Cockpit is a pretty big deal. Set to debut on the all-new 2015 Audi TT and then at least three other new cars, it eliminates the center screen and gauge cluster for a display right in front of the driver. But what will instrumentation look like in 10 years?
