iOS 7 arrives on Apple devices September 18th

The wait is over. Apple’s overhauled OS will be available for download on qualifying devices next week. Control Center, retooled notifications, redesigned calendar and improved Siri functionality alongside numerous other tweaks and thinner typography will soon be a mere download away. In order to take advantage of the update, you’ll need an iPhone 4 or later, iPad 2 or later, iPad mini or fifth-generation iPod touch. As always, this is a free download for device owners which means that grouping photos by moments and iTunes Radio are set to arrive in just over a week.

Apple iPhone 5s hands-on

To Apple faithful, iPhone day is as much a holiday as Thanksgiving (and much more so than, say, Columbus Day), and it typically only comes once a year. This time, however, was a little different, since we received even more presents than usual — both the iPhone 5s and the 5c. We headed to the demo tables after this morning’s announcement and had a chance to get our hands on both smartphones. First, we’ll begin with the 5s, which is the new flagship iPhone that will start at $199 for a 16GB model (32 and 64GB versions will be $299 and $399, respectively) on September 20th.

As you may have already heard, the 5s is rather similar in overall hardware to the iPhone 5, though there are a few changes in key places. As you can see in the above image, it’s available in three colors: space grey (which has black highlights on top and bottom), white and — as rumored so many times — gold.

Apple iPhone 4S now free on-contract in wake of iPhone 5c reveal

Just yesterday, the venerable iPhone 4S sat as Apple’s mid-tier smartphone, but now it’s moving into a new role as the company’s go-to option for budget seekers: an 8GB iPhone 4S is now free on-contract. The news follows this morning’s introduction of the iPhone 5c ($99), which brings a dash of color to Apple’s mid-range and replaces the iPhone 5. A similar discount is also in effect for the unlocked iPhone 4S, which now sells for $450 outright for the new 8GB model. Alongside the price drop, the continuation of the iPhone 4S brings a reprieve for Apple’s legacy 30-pin dock connector, which is an important consideration for compatibility-minded folks. Naturally, you won’t find all the latest goodies — or even LTE — in this 2-year old smartphone, but living behind the curve sure is easier on the wallet.

Apple announces the iPhone 5c: 4-inch Retina display, plastic design, available in five colors starting at $99 on-contract

And then there were two. Apple has for the first time announced a second new iPhone model: the iPhone 5c. As rumored, the device has a colorful new polycarbonate design, which Apple says is made from a single part save the front panel — the whole of which is a multitouch surface — and reinforced with a steel structure thats said to be made using a new construction method. Its “beautifully, unapologetically plastic,” according to Apples Jony Ive.As for specs, youll get the same 4-inch Retina display as the iPhone 5 full sRGB, plus an A6 processor, LTE, Bluetooth 4.0 and dual-band 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi connectivity, a higher capacity batter and an 8-megapixel, backside-illuminated camera with a 5-element lens. A new front-facing camera also promises better performance in low light.Available in blue, white, pink, yellow and green, the 5C will set you back $99 on a two-year contract for the 16GB version, or $199 for the 32GB off-contract options run $549 and $649. Those looking for a bit of added protection can also opt for one of the new cases that Apple has designed to match the phone — theyll set you back $29 apiece. Pre-orders will open up on September 13th, with the phone set to ship alongside the iPhone 5s a week later on September 20th.

Apple’s Most Important New Product This Month Won’t Be an iPhone

Tomorrow, Apple will introduce the world to two new iPhones. One will look almost exactly like the current iPhone, the other will look slightly different. Apple will sell millions of each type. And both will hardly matter at all compared to iOS 7.

There’s going to be a lot written about the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C (if that’s what they end up being called) tomorrow, both here and elsewhere. And when they ship, sometime later this month, there will likely be crowds of people mobbing Apple Stores around the world. But unless those people were paying close attention to Apple’s Worldwide Developer’s Conference, they have no idea what they’re buying.

An iPhone’s not just an iPhone, no more than a sandbox is a bunch of lumber nailed together as a square. It’s what’s inside, and how you interact with it, that counts. iPhones are just an iOS delivery system. And iOS 7, which will launch either tomorrow or concurrently with the the new handsets later this month, is the most important package Apple’s sent in a long, long time.

Reinvented Wheels Take the Air Out of Your Tires | Autopia | Wired.com

You hate flats, loathe checking tire pressure, and constantly run your rubber to its breaking point, but despite all those gripes, the lowly tire hasn’t evolved much over the last hundred years. Sure, there are new, exciting compounds that can make them stick harder, improve fuel economy, or make it to the next gas station after a puncture. But at their core, they’re still rubber donuts fitted to a metal hoop and filled with air. We can do better, so Hankook is out to reinvent the most important part of your car.The Korean tire manufacturer has taken concepts originally developed by Bridgestone and other companies to the next level, combining the wheel and the tire into one cohesive unit that absorbs bumps better than their predecessors while negating the chances of ever getting a flat. The i-Flex is completely air-free, and even better, it has the potential to be a greener solution than traditional tires by both boosting fuel economy and being 95 percent recyclable. The i-Flex uses an intricate array of geometric cells lining the inside of the “wheel,” allowing the whole unit to act as an integrated suspension component. The energy from bumps and ruts is distributed and dissipated equally across the structure, providing the kind of consistent rigidity that a traditional tire and wheel combination can’t achieve. Because overall weight is reduced, fuel consumption is lower and handling has the potential to be improved as unsprung weight is removed from each corner. Hankook claims that the i-Flex’s design also runs quieter than its pneumatic counterparts, something that’s key in electric vehicles where every sound is amplified because of a lack of engine noise. It’s a trick design that’s bound to make it to roads at some point, but Hankook isn’t saying when.

Nobody Knows What Built These Weird Little Web Structures

For some baffling reason, a bunch of tiny, fence-like web structures keep showing up in the Peruvian jungle. Measuring about two centimeters across and delicately constructed, theyre beautiful in a way. And since scientists have no idea how they got there, theyre also totally mysterious.Georgia Tech grad student Troy Alexander first spotted the strangle little structures on the underside of a blue tarp three months ago. Three more later showed up on tree trunks but offered no clues about what built them. They were all found on the same small island off Perus coast, making it entirely possible that an isolated, never-before-seen species of spider or insect was the architect. But frankly, scientists just dont know what made it or what its for.

A Common Liver Drug Could Be Key to Curing Parkinsons

The tragedy of Parkinsons, which progressively robs patients of their physical abilities, is that while certain drugs, therapies and devices can restore some quality of life, so far we havent found a way to stop brain cells from dying. Now, researchers in the UK and Norway have found a drug that could keep brain cells functioning normally — and its been used to treat liver disease for years. The research team, led by Sheffield Institute for Translational Neurosciences Dr. Oliver Bandmann, discovered that the drug ursodeoxycholic acid UDCA helps heal faulty mitochondria, the energy-providing cellular organ whose malfunction causes brain cell death. The drug, used to treat gallstones and some forms of cirrhosis, was found to be the most effective among 2,000 compounds tested on the mitochondria of skin cells from Parkinsons patients over five years. Since mitochondria function the same way in every type of cell, the finding holds big promise for preserving brain cell function.Since UDCA has been in use for many years, researchers can move directly to clinical trials to determine the drugs safety and optimum dosage in Parkinsons patients. And for the first time, researchers can point to compounds that tackle the cellular cause of the disease, rather than simply treating the symptoms as they appear.
