Microsoft announces $39.99 Windows 8 Pro upgrade offer for most Windows users

Microsoft has already detailed the Windows 8 upgrade route for those buying a new computer, and it’s now finally confirmed what everyone else will be paying when they upgrade their existing PC. Those running Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7 will able to download a Windows 8 Pro upgrade for just $39.99. That’s a far cry from the company’s earlier upgrade prices, which as recently as Windows 7 ran $50 and $99 for Home Premium and Pro upgrades, respectively. You will have to pay a bit more if you want packaged DVD version of the upgrade, though, with it running $69.99 at retail — it also sounds like both of those prices will be going up when the promotion ends on January 31st of next year. Not surprisingly, the upgrade process will vary depending on the OS you’re currently using. Those making the jump all the way from Windows XP will only able to bring their personal files with them, while those on Vista will be able to bring their personal files and Windows settings, but no applications. And, if you’re wondering about Media Center, it will be available as a free option once the upgrade is finished.

Microsoft confirms upgrade path and pricing for Windows 8: $14.99 for those buying new PCs

We’ve just gotten a thorough look at the Windows 8 Release Preview, and Microsoft has now also finally confirmed what the upgrade path will look like for those buying PCs before the OS is officially released later this year. The company will be rolling out a Windows Upgrade Offer in no less than 131 markets starting June 2nd, which will let anyone who buys an eligible Windows 7-based PC also purchase a Windows 8 Pro upgrade for $14.99 — that offer will be valid through January 31st, 2013. Upgrade offers for those who already own a Windows 7-based PC will also be announced in the “coming months,” but that’s unfortunately as much as Microsoft is saying about those at the moment.

Everybody Should Follow These Rules for Using Their Phone

Because everyone has the freaking internet on their phone these days, weve forgotten common decency in how to use them. There is such thing as phone etiquette! And we should all follow such rules. Cartoonist Ted Slampyak created propaganda-style posters that details a few rules on how to use a phone in public. Its not that complicated if you think about it but Im pretty sure Ill never be able to stop checking my phone in mid conversation and such. I think the one where most of us do a pretty good job at is flipping off the ringer when were in a movie. What bugs you the most about people and their phone use?

Grab Photoshop and CS2 For Absolutely Free Right Here

Adobes giving us all a late Christmas present. You can grab yourself a free, legitimate copy of Photoshop and the rest of the Creative Suite 2, right now, direct from Adobe. No catch.Well, unless you think having an Adobe account is a catch. Anyway, apparently Adobes tired of keeping the activation servers running to support legitimate installs of the 10-year-old CS2, so its decided to just give it away. Sounds great to me.Handy if all you need is a quick image editor, Photoshop CS2 will still do all the basic things, just not the new fancy smart ‘content aware‘ stuff. Frees free, so get over to Adobe.com and get downloading. [Adobe via Twitter]Update:The install for Mac is actually for Power PC devices, so youll need Mac OS X v.10.2.8–v.10.3.8 or Rosetta to get it working.

The Most Spectacular New Years Eve Fireworks Are Definitely In Dubai

Sometimes I think Dubai exists in its very own dimension, an alternative over-the-top world where everything has to be the best of the best. This amazing photograph by Gerald Donovan is proof: the biggest and tallest firework show in the world, shot on New Year’s Eve 2013 at the Burj Khalifa, the highest man-made structure in the world at 2,722 feet (829.8 meters).
