iPhone 4S pre-orders are in the mail — Engadget

If you were one of the impatient million who jumped to pre-order an iPhone 4S, well, chances are your fancy new handset is already in the mail. A number of tipsters have reached out to us to share their shipment notification emails that just came in from Apple. All the packages weve seen are scheduled for delivery on October 14th, but we wouldnt be shocked if a few of those landed in customers hands a bit early. If you havent already handed over your billing info, youll be waiting at least a week or two longer. But, if you werent camped out at your computer waiting for the 3am sale to begin, were gonna assume youre not terribly concerned.

How Does an Entire Bridge Go Missing?

Police in North Beaver Township, Pennsylvania are scratching their heads right now. Why? A 50-foot long, 20-foot wide steel bridge just disappeared. How? Apparently, some very bold criminals just up and stole it.

Stealing a bridge, as you’d imagine, is a pretty complicated crime. This isn’t some 90s era magic trick people. The local police suspect that the bridge robbers worked at this for over a month. They presumably used a blow torch to cut the corrugated steel and then somehow moved the pieces—steel beams and such— to sell for scrap metal. That couldn’t have been easy as each foot was estimated to weigh hundreds of pounds. But why oh why would you even bother stealing a bridge? Because the scrap metal is estimated to be $100,000. Oh.

Steve Jobs 1955-2011

I’ll always stay connected with Apple. I hope that throughout my life I’ll sort of have the thread of my life and the thread of Apple weave in and out of each other, like a tapestry. There may be a few years when I’m not there, but I’ll always come back

— Steve Jobs, 1985

That’s a quote from a Playboy interview Steve Jobs gave back in 1985. February of 1985, to be specific, right before Steve would be ousted from the company that he co-founded with Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne in 1976. Apple of course famously grew out of a garage, the brains of Woz, the drive of Jobs building the company over the next nine years into a powerhouse in the burgeoning home computer market.

Apple’s fall from grace

Apple was a company that could do no wrong. Phones that dropped every other call… Location tracking scandals… Antennagate… A CEO who constantly parked his $130,000 sports car diagonally in handicapped spaces… Apple didn’t have to roll with the punches, the company would simply laugh at the punches or toss the press and public a few crumbs if need be. A week or even a day later, all was forgiven and Apple would continue on its path, making terrific products and mopping up industry profits while whistling to itself contently.

On Tuesday when Apple unveiled its brand new iPhone 4S, the fifth iteration of Apple’s revolutionary smartphone, things felt different. The company’s iconic co-founder was nowhere to be found, the venue was smaller, the applause seemed reticent and the product unveiled was not greeted with arms open quite as widely as they had been in the past. People seemed, in a way, bored.

Now that we know how the iPhone 4S stacks up against the iPhone 4, lets take a look at how Apples latest smartphone compares to its mightiest competitors on the other major platforms — Android and Windows Phone. In Googles camp we chose the superlative Samsung Galaxy S II models focusing on the announced US variants along with the Motorola Droid Bionic for its qHD and LTE chops. We then picked the upcoming HTC Titan to bat for Microsofts team. RIMs not included here since its still stuck in the junior leagues. We left out the intriguing Nokia N9 because its a niche player. Check out the fancy table after the break — the results are pretty clear cut! Click link below for more

Apple has unveiled Siri, a new iPhone 4S feature that lets you complete tasks on your phone by talking to it.During an on-stage demo at Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, Calif., Apple VP Scott Forstall demonstrated Siri’s ability to process natural language and respond accordingly. When he asked the iPhone 4S, “What’s the weather like today?” it responded with the weather forecast.
