Dont Fire This IT Bro Or Hell Destroy All Your Servers from a McDonalds

Being fired sucks, and naturally everyone thirsts for revenge. With this in mind, Japanese pharma firm Shionogi maybe should have been more careful when it canned IT peon Jason Cornish. Like, maybe change your passwords? Cornish got his vengeance.IT World reports Cornish, who for some idiotic reason was held on as a consultant after being fired, proceeded to remotely wipe out almost all of his former employers servers from a McDonalds WiFi connection. Erased. And should this really come as a surprise? A study from a few years back said 88% of corporate techs would do the same thing if they were fired. Dont piss off smart people! The attack cost Shionogi $800,000, but it could cost Cornish 10 years in prison. Revenge, unlike a Big Mac, is a dish best served cold. [IT World]

Tablets are fun, but they cant replace PCs

The iPad continues to sell as fast as Apple’s manufacturing partners can build them, and other vendors are bound to get in on the action as well once they realize they’re doing it wrong. After all, just about every visible analyst has gone on record with the belief that the tablet market will explode over the next few years. Interestingly, however, several analysts also agree that the explosive tablet market will have very little impact on personal computer sales, and new data from a recent survey reaffirms this notion. Private equity firm Robert W. Baird & Co. recently conducted a survey of 1,114 consumers found that only 6% believe they can do without a PC today. Another 11% say they might be able to live without a PC in the future, but 83% say PCs will live on as a commodity for the foreseeable future. Among the respondents who were current or future tablet owners, 74% said they still need a PC despite owning a tablet. Finally, Baird found that 93% of current tablet owners surveyed use Apple’s iPad. Among prospective tablet buyers, the iPad held the interest of 94.5% of respondents followed by HP’s TouchPad 10.4%, Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 8.3%, Motorola’s XOOM 8.5% and the HTC Flyer 4.3%. Two charts showcasing Baird’s findings follow below.

New Apple Store To Be Made Entirely Out of Glass

Forget about the Apple glass cube. This store has been presented today at the Santa Monica Planning Commission by some “ASB/Blatteis Promenade Holdings, LLC”. Who could be the actual retailer? There’s only two possibilities here: Apple or Apple.

The renderings clearly show an Apple store, down to the tables,

bar at the end, and side displays. The store will take the place of an old Borders (RIP) store on the Third Street Promenade. If approved, the old Borders would be demolished and replaced by this glass 8,084-square-foot glass structure with a 75-foot glass façade:

The proposed one-story, 34-foot high commercial building will feature an expansive floor-to-ceiling height accentuated by a transparent glass ceiling. The front façade will consist entirely of transparent glass panels that will project five feet from stone paneled side walls.

Apple already has a store nearby, but this one is going to be a bigger one, so it may be a replacement.

Full sizeAt this pace, Apple products would be all invisible and intangible soon. And some of you will buy them for $399.99. [Curbed LA]

Replace All Your Sheet Music With the ELASTICK Music Stand

While musicians gleefully move their musical talents into the tech world, they still need a way to see their work during performances or recording sessions. The ELASTICK solves that problem by strapping your tablet to a standard microphone stand. Easy.

And when it isn’t attached to a mic stand, it does a fair job of just keeping your iPad/Android tablet/anything else upright. Whatever app you choose to use, be it an audio recorder, mixer, or a sheet music keeper, this is a pretty cool Kickstarter idea. Chamber orchestras and students alike could make use of something like this. Even if it looks a little awkward. [Kickstarter via Ubergizmo]

Apple bumps iPad 3 launch to 2012 over display issues, report claims

Though Apple had never made public its intention to release a third-generation iPad model this year, a new report claims the 2011 launch of the iPad 3 has been canceled. It has been widely reported that Apple intended to launch a new iPad model with a Retina Display this year, however DigiTimes on Tuesday claims Apple has canceled those plans due to display issues. The trade paper’s unnamed sources from within Apple’s supply chain believe the reason for the delay lies in the inability of Apple’s display partners — Sharp, LG and Samsung — to manufacture high-resolution 9.7-inch Retina Display panels quickly enough. DigiTimes says that Apple plans to have between 28 and 30 million iPad 2 units built in the second half of 2011 in lieu of an iPad 3. A report from TiPb late last week claimed Apple would launch its iPhone 5 in October and the iPad 3 would not launch until spring 2012.

Why is LTE equipment being installed in an Apple Store? — Engadget

Well, this is certainly interesting. While rumors of an LTE-enabled iPhone had died down for a little while, they sprung back to life yesterday with a report that just such a device was being tested by carriers. Now we’ve received an image the image you see above, which shows some 4G LTE equipment that was recently installed in a major Apple store — by AT&T, according to our source. Making things somewhat more interesting is the equipment itself, one piece of which supports only the 700MHz and AWS bands — both of which AT&T plans to use for its LTE network if the T-Mobile acquisition goes through.

We’re also told that the Apple Store in question, and all those in the region, are now trying to increase staffing on the sales floor by about 30 percent, which is apparently not related to the usual hiring in the lead up to the holidays (that will apparently still happen later). Of course, this could simply be the result of some long-term planning rather than evidence of the next iPhone, but the timing is a bit curious to say the least.

Update: We’ve removed the pic for now at the request of our tipster.

AT&T USBConnect Momentum 4G and Mobile Hotspot Elevate 4G scheduled for August 21st launch — Engadget

With it having been in the works for so long, its easy to forget that AT&T is ready to flip the switch on its sparkling-new LTE network virtually any second now. But Ma Bell is happy to remind us of its impending true 4G launch by announcing that its first two dedicated LTE devices, the USBConnect Momentum 4G and Mobile Hotspot Elevate 4G, are set to be sold in stores this upcoming Sunday. In addition, users of the USBConnect Adrenaline will be able to download a firmware update on August 26th that turns on its dormant LTE radio. The carrier also officially announced that its DataConnect plans will be offered for $50 per month for 5GB, with usage charges of $10 for each additional GB. Hold your horses, though — the units will be available for purchase and can be used on HSPA+ for now, but it doesnt guarantee AT&T will activate the higher-speed 4G network next week. Nay, we may have to wait just a little longer before Ralph de la Vega pushes the big red button on his desk, but that day is not too distant.

IPhone 5 pre-orders said to begin September 30th ahead of October 7th launch

Apple will begin taking pre-orders for its new iPhone 5 smartphone on September 30th, with a launch set to occur one week later on October 7th. Apple watcher 9to5 Mac claims to have confirmed the dates with multiple sources, though it does say Apple is currently deciding between two launch dates, October 7th and October 14th. The report also says Apple is mulling September 29th as the date pre-order availability will begin, though one source says the 30th is more likely. TiBp reported last week that Apple will launch its next-generation iPhone handset on October 7th, so this is the second time we’ve seen the date mentioned. TiBp also stated in the same report that Apple’s iPad 3 will not launch until next spring, as opposed to this fall or winter as had been previously reported.

Virus Warning (Skype for Windows users)

Skype has learned that a computer virus called “w32/Ramex.A” is affecting users of Skype for Windows. Please note that Skype users ONLY become infected after they have downloaded the link and run the malicious software. The chat message, of which there are several versions, is cleverly written and may appear to be a legitimate chat message, which may fool some users into clicking on the link.
