AT&T could sell 25% of T-Mobile to sway feds in favor of acquisition

AT&T is prepared to make sacrifices in an effort to sway the U.S. Department of Justice and the Federal Communications Commission in favor of its planned $39 billion acquisition of T-Mobile, Reuters reported on Friday. On August 31st, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against AT&T in attempt to block the merger, a move that is said to have caught both AT&T and T-Mobile USA’s owner, Deutsche Telekom, off-guard. “AT&T is pretty determined that they can find a solution, and they are pretty confident,” one source told Reuters, which noted AT&T’s “two-track” plan that includes possibly selling off as much as 25% of T-Mobile, including customers and spectrum, if the deal is approved. It is still unclear who could be a potential customer for the assets, however, as the government could investigate Sprint or Verizon Wireless if either carrier chose to purchase those assets. Reuters said U.S. District Judge Ellen Segal Huvelle will preside over the case and said Huvelle is known for moving swiftly. AT&T has asked for an expedited hearing and the case could be heard within the next two months.

how to Set Up A VPN Connection in Windows 7

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network, a network that connects one or more computers to a large network, such as a business network, using the Internet. A VPN is encrypted and safe, so it’s widely adopted by many of businesses. VPN is a pretty complicate network protocol that we are not going to discuss more deep in here. What I cover in this post is a simple how-to that simply shows the steps to set up a VPN connection in Windows 7.

First of all, please note that this how-to uses the built-in network setup right in Windows 7, so it works the best if VPN server on the other side is also from Windows Server.

Open up network and sharing center from Control Panel, and choose Set up a new connection or network. Continue reading

Samsung said to be considering webOS acquisition from HP

Following rumors that Samsung was considering a purchase of Hewlett-Packard’s PC business — rumors that Samsung would later deny — DigiTimes is having another go at this potential unholy union. This time around, however, the site claims Samsung is eying HP’s webOS platform instead of its PC business. DigiTimes on Monday reported that Samsung has hired HP’s ex-vice president of PSG marketing Raymond Wah to head up Samsung’s PC business. The report goes on to claim that Samsung is also “considering purchasing webOS to compete head on against Apple and Google, according to sources from notebook players.” The South Korea-based electronics giant is clearly having issues with Android right now. Despite Google’s OS having helped Samsung climb to the No. 2 spot among global smartphone vendors, it also brought with it a flurry of patent-related lawsuits from Apple and other companies. Google just announced its intention to acquire Motorola for $12.5 billion, however, and this purchase is intended in part to help the company defend itself and Android partners against patent complaints from Apple, Microsoft and other combatants in the patent wars. Beyond that, Samsung also has its own in-house smartphone platform, bada, which is seeing success in the Asian market. Samsung declined to comment.

You Can Thank Human-Neanderthal Relations for Your Strong Immune System

Its already been well established that early humans had Bunga-Bunga parties with their closest semi-human relatives. But scientists are just now discovering what came from those relations—a pathogen-killing immune response that persists to this day.A recent study by the Stanford University School of Medicine has found that, through cross-breeding with Neanderthals—and another recently discovered relative called Denisovans—the modern human genome was imparted with key variants of HLA class I genes, the genes that trigger immune system responses to a variety of pathogens.Specifically, researchers discovered a rare HLA gene variant HLA-B73 originated from the mixing of modern humans and their ancestors. And, by comparing the genes, researchers proved that that specific allele likely came from cross-breeding with Denisovans.”We are finding frequencies in Asia and Europe that are far greater than whole genome estimates of archaic DNA in modern human genomes, which is 1 to 6 percent,” Peter Parham told the journal, Science. In just one class of HLA genes, an estimated 50-, 80- and 95-percent of European, Asian, and Papua New Guinean DNA, respectively, is the result of interbreeding with “archaic humans.”While your gigantor brow and heavy jaw line may not win you any beauty contests, you can take solace in knowing that you wont be getting nearly as sick as your more “modern-looking” co-workers this Winter. How to convert any song in your iTunes library to an iPhone ringtone | Its All Tech

Custom ringtones are great – they let you add a personalized touch to your phone. Some phones allow you to add custom ringtones, such as a song in your music library easily, while others, namely the iPhone, do not. While Apple does offer the ability to purchase ringtones through the iTunes Store, many users would like to use tracks they have already purchased for this. Thankfully, there is a way to do this. Step 1: Launch iTunes and make sure you have your iPhone plugged in.Step 2: Choose the song youd like to use as a ringtone. Right-click on the song in iTunes and select “Get Info”Step 3: Under the “Options” tab, check the box next to “Start Time” and “Stop Time.” The ringtone cannot be more than 30 seconds long, so be sure to choose a start and stop time that youd like to use and only 30 seconds. Click “OK” when done.

Take notes for school with CourseNotes for iPad | TiPb

CourseNotes for iPad is a note-taking application geared towards students. You can take notes with text and drawings, share them with classmates, and add assignments to you calendar. The recent update includes rich text editing (bold, italics, underline) and Dropbox support.

It’s apps like these that make me miss being a student. I was a horrible note-taker and I would’ve probably done much better in my general-ed classes if I had CourseNotes to help keep me organized and motivated.

Details and screenshots after the break.
