AT&T will throttle “unlimited” cellular data plans on October 1st | This is my next…

Bad news for AT&T customers with a grandfathered unlimited data plan: starting October 1st, the carrier’s going to squelch speeds for what it’s calling the “top 5 percent of heaviest data users.” We’re not sure what it takes to become one of the elite, but AT&T suggests that you’d have to be “streaming very large amounts of video and music daily” to be considered for a cap, and that even unlucky users will receive multiple notices of their allegedly bad behavior and receive a grace period. Still, it puts AT&T in the unenviable position of being seen handcuffing its users at every turn. With AT&T, your choices as a consumer will be these: capped DSL and U-Verse landline connections, tiered cellular plans up to 4GB, or a supposedly “unlimited” grandfathered (or dumbphone) connection with potentially throttled speeds. That’s not to say that AT&T’s alone in forgetting what words mean, though — T-Mobile’s notoriously been throttling for months, even as it likes to call its plans “truly unlimited” in polite company.

AT&T announces throttling plans, gently reminds us why the T-Mobile acquisition is so great — Engadget

AT&T today officially confirmed what so many had expected for some time now: the carrier will be throttling select users’ unlimited data plans. The move, which takes effect on October 1st, is a response to a “serious wireless spectrum crunch,” according to a message issued today. The changes will not affect most customers, according to the company, primarily targeting those who fall within the top five percent of heavy users in a given billing cycle. Once the new period begins, speeds will be restored. Even with this new plan in place, however, the company says that the spectrum problems still won’t be resolved — it does have a simple solution, however, explaining that “nothing short of completing the T-Mobile merger will provide additional spectrum capacity to address these near term challenges.” Full text after the break.

Could This Be the Design of the iPhone 5?

This is not the iPhone 5. It’s claimed to be an iPhone 5 clone made by a factory in Shenzhen, China, right where the actual iPhone 5 is being produced. Could this really be the iPhone 5 look?

Check the pictures, because something tells me it could be well be very close to the real thing.

It certainly matches the plastic cases and the rumors on Apple using rounded glass for the screen and the back.

It reminds me a bit of the first iPhone, when looked from above. Overall, it feels like a polished merge between the first generation iPhone and the iPhone 4, with the iPhone 3G’s smoothed curves factored in too. It’s simplicity is very Apple, and to me it feels like it can be a real Apple design.

The clone is only 7mm thick. That’s only 0.275! Obviously, it doesn’t have the same guts as the real thing will have, but I certainly expect a thinner iPhone 5.

BMW i Series | Uncrate

We knew it was only a matter of time before BMW got into the electric car game, but we never thought the design of their first models would take the idea so literally. The BMW i Series $TBA includes two models that wouldnt be out of place in a sci-fi flick — the all-electric, rear-wheel drive i3 hatchback, which offers 170 hp, seating for four, a top speed of 93 mph, and a 0-60 time of under eight seconds, and the hybrid i8 coupe, which pairs an electric motor running the front wheels and a turbocharged three-cylinder powering the rears for all-wheel drive possibilities, limited range all-electric driving, a 0-60 time of under five seconds, and a perfect 50/50 weight distribution ratio. No word on whether the production models will be as… funky as the concepts.

Wireless snooping WASP drone knows you want extra jalapeños, no sliced tomato — Engadget

This fearsome contraption is the handiwork of a couple of amateur DEFCON-types who reckoned that any self-respecting spy plane ought to be able to impersonate cellphone towers. And that’s exactly what the Wireless Aerial Surveillance Platform does — it tricks AT&T and T-Mobile handsets into connecting to it, then re-routes the incoming calls via VOIP so they don’t drop, while simultaneously recording all conversations to 32GB of onboard storage. It can also handle a bit of WiFi snooping on the side, thanks to a Linux-based hacking toolkit and a 340 million word dictionary for guessing passwords. What’s more, the WASP apparently achieves all of this without breaking a single FCC regulation. So, er, that’s fine then. Oh yeah, and we don’t want any of that stuffed crust nonsense, you hear?

Florida school scrapping textbooks and rolling out iPads to its students | TiPb

Lake Minneola High School has adopted the iPad as its future learning device of choice. When students return next month they will have access to a shiny new iPad for school time and home use. Lake Minneola will be the first public school in Central Florida to buy Apples iconic tablet for all of its students.

“Students learn differently now because of the technology,” said Kathy Halbig, innovative learning manager for the Lake school district who is overseeing the project. “Students are used to having multiple sources and being able to have more social collaboration in their learning process rather than just doing it sitting quietly and reading.” “Rather than have a child have five tools on his or her desk they’ve got one tool that will function as the textbook, the Slate, the Internet access, note taker, calendar,” she said.

The school has invested around $700,000 buying up 1750 iPads for its students. Teachers are already planning lessons using the iPad as the focal point complete with selected educational apps. The school believes that it will save them money in the long term.

The iPads will be locked down to prevent students installing apps that are not appropriate to the school learning process. Each iPad will also be supplied with a rugged case to protect it from everyday school life.

The Isostick Makes A Mockery Of Optical Disk Hegemony | TechCrunch

In the old days, you used to have to put something called “optical media” into a “DVD drive” to install software and operating systems. Those days are long over thanks to an odd little USB key called the Isostick.Although the project doesn’t officially exist – it’s almost funded on Kickstarter – the IsoStick promises to allow you to load any ISO disk image from any computer just as if it were loading it from an optical disk. Why would you want to do this? Well, some computers can’t boot directly from a USB thumbdrive and the IsoStick solves this by masquerading as an optical drive first and a thumb drive second. Almost any PC will boot from an optical disk, which makes the Isostick so useful. You can write multiple ISOs onto the FAT32 drive and a special selector lets you pick which one to load. This means you could keep multiple install images on one USB drive and install them as needed.

iPhone price cuts hitting Radio Shack, Target tomorrow?Let the speculation begin! It may not be a sign of an iPhone refresh, but we’ve received multiple tips today about an imminent price drop for Apple’s flagship smartphone. According to a pair of trusty tipsters, Radio Shack is prepping to cut the cost of AT&T’s 16GB iPhone 4 to $169.99, with a two-year contract, from $199.99. The 32GB version will likewise take a $30 plunge at the Shack, ringing in at $269.99, and the price of the 8GB 3GS will drop to $19.99. Phone Arena is likewise reporting on Target slicing up the old Apple price tag, but lists varying numbers based on carrier. If all this talk turns out to be true, those prices should be ripe for the picking starting tomorrow.
