The Battleship Trailer is Ridiculous…ly Watchable

It doesn’t have Samuel L. Jackson, but it’s got Brooklyn Decker and explosions. Well played! And Liam Neeson is pretty much always bad ass, even in bad movies.

Intrepid Imbecile Lodges Himself in Storm Drain Chasing Lost Phone

Sam Biddle — Jared was just minding his own business, when he claims he was attacked by a roving gang, who pummeled the shit out of him and threw his phone down a storm drain. So he went in after it.One of the pivotal questions in this marvelously reported dispatch is, of course, Jared, were you drunk? He says no. Although he “woke up confused,” he claims he was just high on life and perhaps some brain hemorrhaging when he dove into the small manhole looking for the phone, which must have been made out of god damn gold and moon dust, instead of, oh I dont know, seeking medical attention and calling the cops. But his bravery paid off! Oh wait, no, he was just stuck, ass in the air, with his legs kicking, as neighbors gawked and laughed. For forty minutes. Onlookers were captivated: “I can see these feet dangling in the drain, and I was like, what?”Like, what, indeed. If you watch one thing this year, let it not be the birth of your first child, but rather FOX 40 reporter Tihanna McCleese trying to reenact the phone-dive: “Yep, thats how he got in.”This would have been the sext opportunity of a lifetime, Jared, but unfortunately you were too busy bleeding and flailing for romance. Pity. [via BuzzFeed]

12th Annual System Administrator Appreciation

July 29, 2011 Last Friday Of July

12th Annual System Administrator Appreciation Day

A sysadmin unpacked the server for this website from its box, installed an operating system, patched it for security, made sure the power and air conditioning was working in the server room, monitored it for stability, set up the software, and kept backups in case anything went wrong. All to serve this webpage.

A sysadmin installed the routers, laid the cables, configured the networks, set up the firewalls, and watched and guided the traffic for each hop of the network that runs over copper, fiber optic glass, and even the air itself to bring the Internet to your computer. All to make sure the webpage found its way from the server to your computer.

A sysadmin worries about spam, viruses, spyware, but also power outages, fires and floods. When the email server goes down at 2 AM on a Sunday, your sysadmin is paged, wakes up, and goes to work.

A sysadmin is a professional, who plans, worries, hacks, fixes, pushes, advocates, protects and creates good computer networks, to get you your data, to help you do work — to bring the potential of computing ever closer to reality.

So if you can read this, thank your sysadmin — and know he or she is only one of dozens or possibly hundreds whose work brings you the email from your aunt on the West Coast, the instant message from your son at college, the free phone call from the friend in Australia, and this webpage.

Show your appreciation Continue reading

The Borders Goodbye Email Is Like Old Yeller in Slow Motion

Brian Barrett —Just when the snarkbot in me wanted to giggle at Borders like a great big jerk, they go and send this genuinely heartfelt farewell message. In summary: they got their butts kicked, and they’re sorry. So am I.

Who pulled the trigger? Borders tells it straight up:

The fact is that Borders has been facing headwinds for for quite some time, including a rapidly changing book industry, the eReaders revolution, and a turbulent economy. We put up a great fight, but regrettably, in the end, we weren’t able to overcome these external forces.

The extent to which a partnership with Kobo constitutes a “great fight” is debatable, but that’s a moot point. Borders was a store that sold books, and they did it well for 40 years. But progress is progress, and they couldn’t tack fast enough to keep up with the winds. Plain and and simple, and kind of devastating.

You can help put Borders out of its misery starting today, when the Great Book Liquidation kicks off with a whimper. While you’re there, pour one out for your teenage weekends killing time at the mall, for the part of you that cleaves to the 90s like a joey does its pouch.

Seriously, do. It’s not like they care about the carpets any more.

You told us a lot of you had already downloaded Lion, but now Apples gone ahead and put any doubts about this $29.99 updates popularity to rest. A cool one million downloads of Lion have been registered in the first day of availability. Maybe our Lion review will push you one way or tother.

This Enterprising Fool Has Already Started Waiting in Line for the iPhone 5 Updated

Casey Chan —Rob Shoesmith is either the smartest man alive or the most foolish. I cant quite decide. Why? Because Shoesmith is already in line for the not-even-announced iPhone 5. Stuuuupid, right? Well, hes also received $64,000 worth of goods in sponsorships for doing so.The 29-year-old marketing executive for Medl Mobile, a company that makes iPhone apps, has camped outside the Covent Garden Apple Store in London and is using his blog to document the experience of lining up ridiculously early. Astutely, he asked companies to help him out in exchange, hed promote their products on his blog and the companies have come out in troves I guess theyre the real dumb ones?! According to the Metro News, hes been given “everything from scented candles and aftershave to use of a $32,600 Chevrolet car, $1300 worth of outdoor gear and food from top restaurants.”The publicity stunt seems to be working pretty damn well. But with still a month or two before the iPhone 5 even comes out, is Shoesmith a genius or a fool? Free stuff be damned, I dont think I could do what hes doing. [Rob Shoesmith via Metro UK via App Advice]Update: Rob has contacted us and made clear that he HASNT STARTED camping out for the iPhone 5 yet. He doesnt know when he will start but I think

Space Shuttle Atlantis touches down in Florida, won’t be going back up again — Engadget

You already know how we feel about the Space Shuttle program coming to a close, but of course that was just a little premature. Now it’s all done except for the mothballing, with the Atlantis touching down successfully at runway 15 at Kennedy Space Center. Crewmembers Chris Ferguson, Doug Hurley, Sandy Magnus, and Rex Walheim are back on our planet and, traveling at speeds decidedly slower than escape velocity, can officially put a cap onto this historic series of space missions that we, at least, will never forget. In the words of NASA: “Job well done, America.”

For those interested, head over to NASA’s website for the live coverage of this historic moment.

The OS X Lion Survival Guide

Okay, so OS X Lion isn’t perfect. But chances are, that probably isn’t going to stop you from picking it up today. With that in mind, here’s our guide to help you make the most of Apple’s new OS.

Tips, Tricks and Workarounds

Full sizeRemap Gestures That Don’t Make Sense

One of our biggest gripes about Lion is that it offers next to no options for remapping gestures. It wouldn’t be that big of a deal, except that some of the most commonly used functions have super-uncomfortable gestures, like the four-fingered-but-not-the-pinky hand explosion to clear to the desktop. Come on.

Luckily, there are programs like the free BetterTouchTool that let you remap the goofy gestures to better suit your tastes. (You can see mine in the screenshot.) BTT doesn’t support Lion functions like Mission Control natively just yet, but you can map gestures to their respective keybinds. [click below to read more]
