Tech-Savvy Victim Tracks Laptop Thief, Has Lulz at His Expense

Heres a bit of advice for would-be gadget thieves: dont steal other peoples stuff. But if you do have the compulsion to take what isnt yours, do the world a favor, and make sure you steal from people who are incredibly tech-savvy, like Mark Bao. The 18-year-old entrepreneur and student at Bentley University in Waltham, Massachusetts had his MacBook Air stolen roughly two months ago. Last week, Bao discovered he could access some features of the machine, including his browser history and the contents of his hard drive. One of the revelations was that his thief as have others before him immediately took a picture with Photo Booth. The crook even recorded himself dancing terribly to a remix of Tygas Make it Rain, which Bao posted on YouTube. Check it out after the break.

iPhone 4 falls 1,000 feet from airplane, survives without a scratch | BGR

When Apple first unveiled its iPhone 4 smartphone last summer, most media and bloggers were in agreement that the new glass construction was stunning. They also agreed, however, that the iPhone 4 would likely be more prone to significant damage than other smartphones due to the fragile nature of glass compared to plastic and metal. While we’ve heard our fair share of shattered iPhone stories, U.S. Air Force Combat Controller Ron Walker’s tale should help dispel the notion that the iPhone 4 is inherently fragile. While leaning out of an airplane looking for landmarks, Walker’s Velcro pocket flap popped open and his iPhone 4 plummeted to the earth below. At the time, the plane was traveling at 150 m.p.h at an altitude of roughly 1,000 feet. Once on the ground, Walker told a few friends what had happened, one of whom installed Apple’s “Find My iPhone” app on his own handset in an attempt to locate Walker’s lost phone. Unexpectedly, the app found Walker’s iPhone immediately and when the men drove to its location, they found the smartphone in perfect working condition without a scratch on it. Walker kept his iPhone in a standard Griffin case and it had no other casing or special protection at the time of its fall.

More iPhone 5 metal back, 4-inch screen, NFC rumors | TiPb

Adding more — if decidedly similar — fuel to iPhone 5 rumor fire, China Times is reporting that trial production has begun on the device, and that it does indeed have a 4-inch screen, metal back/chassis, NFC (near field communications), and perhaps an improved antenna and dual GSM/CDMA support. All this packed into pretty much the same form factor as iPhone 4.

They claim, however, it will only ramp up production in Q3, 2011 (July to September) which would be later than Apple’s typical summer release schedule.

Are the rumors getting steady enough that you’re starting to believe this is what we’ll see in the 5th generation iPhone?

My rant about McDonald’s

I go through McDonald’s drive-through nearly every morning. I not a big coffee drinker, but I am picky about the coffee I drink. Being Puertorrican, I have been drinking coffee for a very long time (We like our coffee). I mention this because most people are surprised to hear that I prefer MickeyD’s coffee to Starbucks hands down. But at least when I did frequent Starbucks if I asked for a tall, I got a tall.

The past few months I have been very annoyed with MickeyD’s. It seems that every time I order a latte if I want a small I need to order a medium or if I’m in mood for a medium I need to order a large. Since lately my coffee has been getting lighter and lighter. I would have to say that 8 out of 10 times the coffee is about 1″ to 1½” inches below the rim and sometimes it’s been more. You might say who cares no big deal. If you usually order a large it’s not a big deal, but when you order a medium and especially a small, then it becomes a big deal.

For the past few months I have sort of set it to the side as “whatever, no big deal”. It’s a trade off for getting fast service, because they are fast, which is the second reason I use their drive-through. But now that they have me hooked on their Oatmeal I have noticed the same thing. Coincidently, I have tried other MickeyD’s drive-through and it seems to be an issue in many of them. Is this the price I pay for speed? Or is it the price I pay for using the McDonald’s drive-through? I don’t really know. Bottom line there are more important things to worry about, and this doesn’t even make the list. But I had to get it off my chest and since I do have a blog. Here it is.

Thanks for listening, and have fun!

Your 3G T-Mobile Phone Will Be Useless After AT-T Merger

Its a problem thats at least two years away, but AT&T has confirmed that 3G T-Mobile handsets wont be able to access the network once T-Mobiles towers are repurposed to drive AT&Ts 4G LTE push. Theres no word on whether AT&T-Mo will reimburse customers for the cost of a new phone. Worth keeping in mind if youre a T-Mobile customer up for an upgrade in the next year or so.

AT&T to acquire T-Mobile from Deutsche Telekom for $39 billion | BGR

AT&T, the nation’s second largest wireless provider, has just announced that it will acquire T-Mobile USA from parent company Deutsche Telekom in a cash and stock deal worth approximately $39 billion. With all of the talk of Sprint and T-Mobile joining up, the AT&T news comes out of the blue — though strategically it makes more sense due to both carriers’ spectrum and network technology. It has been widely reported that Deutsche Telekom was looking to get rid of T-Mobile USA for various reasons. AT&T has also committed to delivering LTE to an additional 46 million people with the T-Mobile acquisition, promising to cover close to 95% of the U.S. population with LTE wireless services in the future. The deal is expected to close, pending regulatory approval, within the next 12 months. The full press release is after the break.

Just because is on the internet, doesn’t make it true!

Last week, workers at the Fukushima nuclear plant began cooling the rods with sea water. Their effort, while not always successful, was deliberate and measured. Shame the same wasnt true of the foreign reaction. The U.S. news media has been, to put it mildly, alarmist – in direct contrast with the Japanese media. That isnt to say the Japanese media is never sensational. When the swine flu scare was in full swing, Japanese news programs showed close-ups of the virus and ran segments, showing how a single person sneezing on a subway train could spread the virus throughout the carriage. Ominous music was employed and on-screen letters were rendered with fonts that seemed more at home on a horror film poster.Yet, the Japanese news coverage is showing more restraint that usual. Perhaps its the lives that were lost or are still at stake. Perhaps it is the seriousness of the situation. There are those who believe that the Japanese media is part of a large cover-up there always are. But the whole world is watching. Too bad everyone isnt seeing correct information.

AT&T cracks down on tethering cheaters | BGR

AT&T has started to issue warnings to customers unofficially tethering their smartphones to its network. In an email to unauthorized tetherers, the company writes, “Our records show that you use this capability, but are not subscribed to our tethering plan.” The correspondence goes on to note that users will be automatically enrolled in the $45 per month “DataPro for Smartphone Tethering” plan if they ignore the warning. “The new plan – whether you sign up on your own or we automatically enroll you – will replace your current smartphone data plan, including if you are on an unlimited data plan,” the email continues. The standard DataPro offering is $25 per month and provides users with 2GB of monthly data, although some users are still clinging to a discontinued, $30 per month 5GB data plan. It is safe to assume that a large portion of the unofficial, tethering populous is jailbroken iPhone users and rooted Android users. “If you discontinue tethering, no changes to your current plan will be required.” A copy of the email tethering-cheaters are receiving is after the break.

Earthquake rattles Puerto Rico – This Just In – CNN.com Blogs

5.7-magnitude earthquake struck Puerto Rico early Sunday morning, the United States Geological Survey said. The USGS placed the epicenter of the quake near the city of Moca, in the northwestern end of the island. Officer Guidiberto Torres Valle with the Moca Police Department said some parts of the city lost power, but service was quickly restored. The Municipal Hospital in the city of Cayey treated a woman suffering from anxiety caused by the earthquake but no other injuries. Araceli Vega, a nurse in the hospital, told CNN that she was treating a patient when she felt the building rattle, followed by a short moment of fear and confusion.
