The biggest shark ever filmed is basically the size of a blimp

The biggest shark ever filmed is basically the size of a blimp

Hey look, it’s Jaws in real life. Which should scare the bones out of land dwelling ol’ me but the sheer size of this giant monster great white shark is so ridiculously huge (I mean, it’s more blimp than shark), that I can’t help but laugh. Look at it dwarf the entire cage and treat that daredevil of a scuba diver as some peon fish not even worth eating.

When you’re that big, humans are fun size snacks that only make you hungrier. The shark in the video, recorded by marine biologist Mauricio Hoyos Padilla, is the famous Deep Blue. It’s 20 feet long (and maybe pregnant!) and is one of the biggest sharks ever caught on film. Watch her below if you want to never go into the ocean again.

This Little Fusion Reactor May One Day Power the World

Fusion power has seemed like science fiction — a boundless energy source that would light up the world forever, if only we could figure out how to contain it. And yet we’re always about thirty years away from solving that mystery. Until now.

Recent advances in magnet technology have brought fusion a little closer to the present. MIT researchers have just unveiled designs for a compact, tokamak (donut-shaped) fusion reactor that uses new, barium oxide-based superconductors to produce powerful magnetic fields capable of confining a fusion reaction. The reactor, which is about half the diameter of current models, could in theory produce enough electricity for 100,000 people.

Best of all, the researchers say the concept could be realized in a decade.

Sweet Minecraft PC, Guy

Spencer Kern built a new PC recently, but he didn’t just go and build any old tower with some fans. He wanted a Minecraft-themed computer, and boy did he make one.

The Redstone PC is a cube that resembles the Minecraft resource, but the attention to detail goes way past the case. Spencer customised the peripherals too, from the keyboard to the mouse to the headphones to a custom Xbox 360 controller (with chatpad).

How To Enable GodMode In Windows 10 | Redmond Pie

If you’re a hardcore Windows fan who likes to keep up with all of the features and functionality of Microsoft’s OS, especially those intricacies that the company has chosen not to tell you about, then the chances are that you already knew about the hidden “GodMode”. This was the term given to a special folder containing links to a multitude of settings throughout the Windows system, and has been present in the last three major versions of Windows. Thankfully, especially for those that like to tinker with some forbidden settings, the rather powerful sounding GodMode is still present in Windows 10.

It’s also relatively simple to initiate GodMode in Microsoft’s latest OS as per previous versions of Windows.

iOS 9 Wi-Fi Assist feature: Automatically switch to cellular data | BGR

Here’s an annoying issue that iPhone users are all too familiar with: You’re surfing the web on a Wi-Fi connection that your device automatically hopped on – at home, in a public place, or at work – and all of a sudden the app you’re in tells you it can’t load something because you don’t have an Internet connection. Yet you do! After all, you’re paying your wireless carrier every month for a mobile data plan on its 4G network… and yet your phone won’t automatically switch to that. Enter iOS 9, which will change all that.

iOS 9 beta 5 (or public beta 3) includes the Wi-Fi feature we’ve been waiting for years: It will automatically switch to cellular data whenever your Wi-Fi dies out.

There’s a new setting you need to look for in the Settings app and toggle it on and off depending on your carrier data allotment. The feature is called Wi-Fi Assist and it will let you “automatically use cellular data when Wi-Fi connectivity is poor,” as Apple explains it (see the screenshot below).

Video: A portrait of the world’s youngest master penman

It’s not like I totally judge people’s handwriting (okay, I judge them a little) but it’s just refreshing to see good penmanship in 2015 because it’s so rare. We all just type on computers or phones and the most we write is two or three looping scribbles on a receipt. Here’s a look at someone who doesn’t just type and scribble though, in fact, he’s a Master Penman.

Made by Uproxx, the video profiles Jake Weidmann, one of twelve Master Penmans in the world and the youngest by three decades.

The astonishing 390-year old bonsai tree that survived the Hiroshima atomic blast | BGR

The history of a 390-year old bonsai tree at the National Arboretum that survived the Hiroshima atomic blast is being honored this week. Thursday marks the 70thanniversary of the Hiroshima bombing.

The Japanese White Pine is in the Arboretum’s National Bonsai and Penjing Museum. The tree was donated in 1976 by bonsai master Masaru Yamaki as part of Japan’s Bicentennial gift to the American people.

However, the tree’s astonishing tale of survival was only revealed to the museum in 2001 during a visit by the late bonsai master’s grandsons Akira and Shigeru Yamaki.

The Washington Post reports that a walled bonsai nursery belonging to the Yamaki family was less than two miles from the site of the Hiroshima bomb blast, just far enough for the tree to survive. Jack Sustic, curator of the Bonsai and Penjing Museum, told the Washington Post that the ancient tree was up against the wall, which likely shielded it from the blast.

News footage taken at the Yamaki nursery after the atomic bomb blast shows the Japanese White Pine unscathed, according to the Washington Post.

The tree is the oldest bonsai in the National Arboretum’s collection.

Video: See Lexus’ real-life hoverboard in action for the first time | BGR

Yes, the Lexus Slide hoverboard is real. And yes, the teaser videos showed an actual skateboard-like gadget that hovers above the ground, just like Marty McFly’s hoverboard from the Back To The Future trilogy. But the teasers didn’t do the hoverboard justice – so now the company finally released a video that shows the amazing device in action.

DON’T MISS: Stop Windows 10 spying dead in its tracks with one free app

At just over two minutes long, the new clip Lexus posted on YouTube is already going viral. The video shows a bunch of people trying out the hoverboard, using it just as you’d expect.

Spoiler alert: this hoverboard runs over water as well, so Marty McFly would definitely be green with envy over what Lexus has achieved here.

However, there’s a big but in this one: Lexus did make the impossible possible, as it says in its promotional videos. But… you can’t buy a hoverboard just yet. The gadget was conceived as a marketing stunt for the carmaker’s new vehicles, and it’s unlikely that Lexus is ready to sell commercial versions of the Slide.

The problem isn’t necessarily that a hoverboard is an expensive gadget – the price for it hasn’t even been mentioned – but that it requires special technology embedded in the ground in order for it to hover. In other words, as long as roads and skateboard parks like the one in the clip below lack this special magnetic tech, the device will be completely useless.
