Daily Show: Jon Stewart helped launch a number of comedic careers | BGR

After an impressive 16-season run, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart will air its final show this coming Thursday. While we’ve certainly seen no shortage of retrospectives highlighting all of the laughs and crazy show moments that took place over the last decade and a half, one of the more intriguing aspects of The Daily Show, I think, is that the program was an absolute star making machine.

Look backing, the sheer number of top notch comedians, media personalities, and actors who got their start on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart is impressive. Sure, most people might recognize Stephen Colbert and Steve Carell as two stars who honed their comedy chops on the show, but the program’s all-star lineup of former cast members runs much deeper.

Windows 10 has a $15 DVD player app that you shouldn’t buy

Microsoft may have inadvertently made a good case for embracing movie downloads and streams. The company has released an official DVD Player app that lets you play old-school disc-based movies in Windows 10. Sounds convenient, right? It is, but there’s one big problem: it’s $15. Yes, if you got your Windows 10 upgrade for free, it’ll cost you more to play that dusty copy of Armageddon in DVD Player than it did to get an entire operating system.

It wouldn’t be surprising if DVD licensing costs are a factor behind the pricing, as the patents behind the technology still aren’t cheap. However, you don’t really need to pay anything to watch these titles — free apps like VLC will not only play DVDs, but many of the formats that Windows 10 can’t handle out of the box. And did we mention that the official software doesn’t do Blu-ray movies? Unless you’re holding on to a large DVD collection and insist on first-party programs for your PC-based viewing, you’ll probably better off either using an alternative app or signing up for a streaming video subscription.

Bring Back Handwriting

Most of us go days without writing anything by hand, and when we finally need to jot something down, it looks like the writing of a third grader. Writing by hand in the digital age feels almost antiquated, but there are plenty of reasons to maintain the quality of your penmanship, or (gasp) even improve it.

Writing by Hand Can Lead to Better Learning

There are cognitive reasons that you might want to revisit your penmanship and start writing again. As you might’ve heard before, taking notes by hand can actually help you retain more information, as you’re essentially forced to reframe the information you’re hearing instead of transcribing it directly. There’s science to back it up too.

There’s even research on children that demonstrates writing by hand can cause people not only retain more information, but to also have more ideas. Typing and writing are associated with different brain patterns, says psychologist Virginia Bernigner. The children in her study who wrote by hand actually produced more words and ideas than their typing counterparts. The children with better handwriting also expressed “greater neural activation in areas associated with working memory.” Actively engaging in the physical act of forming letters and words can stir your creative juices by sparking areas of your brain that you otherwise wouldn’t be using. This Video Explains All the Ways You’re Sleeping Wrong

Most of us are pretty terrible at sleeping. Whether it’s hitting the snooze button too much or using screens before bed, you’re probably doing something that’s not great for your sleep. This video explains all the ways you’re sleeping wrong, and what to do instead.

The video, from YouTube channel You’re Doing It Wrong, offers examples of many things we do wrong while we’re sleeping (like sleeping on your stomach). It also offers some tips on how to sleep better. These include sleeping without clothes (to help reduce your body temperature), sleep on your back (to prevent damage to your spine), and skipping the alcohol before bed (to make sure you stay asleep). Not everything in this video is new information, but it deals with a lot of the problems with how we sleep in a simple six-minute package.

Getting error code -54 in iTunes on Windows 10? Here’s your fix | iMore

downloadIf you are having trouble syncing your iPhone, iPod, or iPad after the Windows 10 update, don’t worry. With just a few clicks you will be back up and running, and able to sync your device with your computer again. It appears as though the Windows 10 update is marking the iTunes folder as Read Only, meaning that your computer won’t allow it to sync with the device you have plugged in. So, how do you fix this -54 error? Simple.

  1. Open Windows Explorer
  2. Head to the Music folder
  3. Right click on your iTunes folder
  4. Go to Properties
  5. Uncheck the Read Only option under Atrributes

You will notice another pop up window as it applies the changes to all the sub-folders. If the problem still persists, verify that you have full control over the iTunes folder. To do this, right click the folder again, go to properties, then security, and finally click edit and then full control and apply. Once this is done, you should be able to head back into iTunes and sync your device again without an issue.

Thanks for the tip, Darran!

Don’t Fall For This Windows 10 Email Scam

Windows 10 is good, sure, but don’t be in such a rush to upgrade that you get suckered in by this (fairly obvious) email scam.

As spotted by Cisco, some scammers are taking advantage of the reservation system for Windows 10 to send out malware-ridden emails, posing as Microsoft. The email pretends to contain the installer package for Windows 10, while really carrying a nasty piece of ransomware called CTB-Locker, which will encrypt your files and hold you over a virtual barrel for payment.

The email goes to a few lengths to appear legitimate — a spoofed email address, so it looks like it comes from update@microsoft.com, and disclaimer/antivirus messages that give the impression of authenticity.

But all the hallmarks of an email scam are still there: missing characters, eigth-grader writing style, and, of course, the fact that Windows 10 is installed on your desktop, not through an email attachment.

Why Are Dogs So Insanely Happy to See Us When We Get Home?

Why Are Dogs So Insanely Happy to See Us When We Get Home?

Unlike a certain companion animal that will go unnamed, dogs lose their minds when reunited with their owners. But it’s not immediately obvious why our canine companions should grant us such an over-the-top greeting—especially considering the power imbalance that exists between the two species. We spoke to the experts to find out why.

New Milestones in Connectivity Lab’s Aircraft and Laser Programs | Facebook Newsroom

Since we launched Internet.org, it’s been our mission to find ways to provide internet connectivity to the more than 4 billion people who are not yet online. Many of these people live within range of at least a 3G wireless signal, and our work in the last year with mobile operators across 17 countries has provided more than a billion people with access to relevant basic internet services. But 10 percent of the world’s population lives in remote locations with no internet infrastructure, and the kinds of infrastructure technologies used everywhere else — things like fiber-optic cable, microwave repeaters and cell towers — may be a challenge to deploy cost-effectively in these regions.

That’s where the Connectivity Lab comes in. Our goal is to accelerate the development of a new set of technologies that can drastically change the economics of deploying internet infrastructure. We are exploring a number of different approaches to this challenge, including aircraft, satellites and terrestrial solutions. Our intention is not to build networks and then operate them ourselves, but rather to quickly advance the state of these technologies to the point that they become viable solutions for operators and other partners to deploy.

NASA space telescope discovers Earth’s closest rocky neighbor

NASA researchers working with the Spitzer Space Telescope announced on Thursday that they had indeed found the closest rocky exoplanet to our own. It’s a tiny burg called HD 219134b that’s just 21 light years from Earth in the Cassiopeia constellation, near the North Star. It was first spotted with the 3.6-meter Galileo National Telescope in the Canary Islands before being confirmed with the Spitzer. Even though the planet is larger than Earth, researchers only noticed it as it transited across the face of its parent star (astronomers look for the star to dim then brighten again as evidence of an orbiting planet). Unfortunately, there’s basically zero chance that we’ll find aliens there as 134b orbits far too close to sustain life.
