Jaguar adapts NASA tech to monitor brainwaves and avoid accidents

If you’re wondering how many projects Jaguar Land Rover’s developing in addition to its pothole and cyclist alerts, the answer is “quite a few.” In fact, the company has revealed that it’s working on several technologies, which can monitor your condition to prevent accidents, collectively called “Sixth Sense.” The most intriguing one in the list is “Mind Sense,” which was derived from a NASA tech used to enhanced a pilot’s concentration skills. Mind Sense aims to read your brain waves (amplified and filtered by software) using sensors embedded in the steering wheel. An on-board computer will then assess whether you’re alert enough to commandeer a vehicle weighing thousands of pounds. The steering wheel could be programmed to vibrate or the computer could issue a warning sound, in case you’re daydreaming or starting to fall asleep.

The automaker is also in the midst of putting together medical-grade sensors to embed in the driver’s seat, particularly for the Jaguar XJ luxury sedan. Those sensors will be in charge of making sure you’re fit to drive; it could, for instance, dim the lighting or play some music if it senses stress. In future cars with self-driving capability, it could detect whether you’re having a seizure or a heart attack and automatically take control of the steering wheel.

Jaguar wants to make sure its fancy infotainment system doesn’t distract you, as well, so it’s developing an upgraded version that can predict what you want to press before your fingers even reach it. It actually already has a prototype of a mid-air touch screen display that uses cameras to track your hands. In the future, the company plans to add ultrasonic feedback in order to trick your brain into thinking you’ve already touched the screen. Finally, the British company’s working on an accelerator pedal that provides haptic feedback. It could vibrate when you’re going over the speed limit, for example, or as a warning that you’re going to hit another vehicle.

Cuba is getting island-wide WiFi hotspots next month

Cuba’s making it easier and cheaper for its citizens to get online by building out an island-wide network of WiFi hotspots. According to local paper Juventud Rebelde, the nation’s state-run telecommunications company will open up internet access in 35 locations that should be available from the start of July. The move will also cut the price of getting online in half, with an hour of connection pegged to cost $2 per hour. According to Cuba’s director of telecommunications, Luis Manuel Diaz, that’s still too expensive for the bulk of the island’s citizens. It’s hardly a surprise, either, since the cost of a Netflix subscription in the country is around a third of the average monthly wage.

It may be 2015 but that doesn’t mean that Cubans are going to enjoy Google Fiber-style speeds straight off the bat. In fact, users will have their speed capped to “1MB per user,” which we’re taking to mean 1Mbps, although that could just be an issue with the translation. There’s also going to be come issues with congestion, since the infrastructure can only cope with 50-100 users at a time.

The New York Times believes that could be an issue since there’s a growing number of younger citizens who own smartphones. In fact, Havana’s one existing hotspot, based in the workshop of a local artist, is described as being “constantly packed.” Then again, it’s a step in the right direction as the world’s biggest tech companies see the island as a rich seam of untapped potential.

A Smartphone App Turns a Land Rover Into a Giant RC Car

A Smartphone App Turns a Land Rover Into a Giant RC Car

Have you ever found your car stranded in a parking lot because some neighboring (jerk) drivers have parked too close for you to even open the door? That’s one problem that Jaguar Land Rover’s new prototype remote app can solve, letting you back your vehicle out of a tight spot using your smartphone.

The app uses the same sensors that Jaguar Land Rover’s vehicles currently rely on for their autonomous parking features. But instead of sitting in the car and letting the vehicle do all the work, the app allows drivers to control its steering, throttle, brakes, even gearshifts (presumably just reverse and forward) from outside the ride. So drivers can serve as their own spotters for getting in and out of tight spaces, or ensuring their car doesn’t bottom out on a hill while off-roading.

How ducks are force fed to make foie gras

How ducks are force fed to make foie gras

Here’s a revealing documentary about what is perhaps America’s most controversial food: foie gras. Made by Zagat, it tries to examine all sides of the story. From the farm that supplies the fattened duck liver to the chefs who cook the buttery meat goodness to the organizations that oppose the concept of force feeding animals to the animal experts who understand the biology of ducks best. It’s an interesting watch.

The GIF above shows how Hudson Valley Foie Gras gavage feeds their ducks. This process happens about three times a day. A duck’s anatomy allows it to tolerate getting a tube stuck down their throat but boy, it’s still pretty unpleasant to see.

Microsoft shows off ‘Minecraft’ built specifically for HoloLens

At its E3 2015 event, Microsoft has given us a new demo of Minecraft built specifically for its HoloLens augmented reality headset. As we’ve guessed since the hardware originally appeared, the creative world-building game is a perfect fit for the futuristic hardware. The demonstrator at first controlled the experience with an Xbox One controller, then just used his hands in the air to play, and could peek around, above and through his creations simply by moving around in real space. A little awkward to watch, sure, but the live feed showed us a simulated HoloLens feed so we could follow along. We still don’t know when we’ll be exploring its combination of real and virtual worlds for ourselves, but Microsoft promises more information at the MineCon event that starts July 4th. If you missed it in the stream, check out our gallery to see how it all looks.

Still I Rise

You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I’ll rise.

Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
‘Cause I walk like I’ve got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.
Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I’ll rise.

Did you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
Shoulders falling down like teardrops,
Weakened by my soulful cries?
Does my haughtiness offend you?
Don’t you take it awful hard
‘Cause I laugh like I’ve got gold mines
Diggin’ in my own backyard.

You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I’ll rise.
Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise

That I dance like I’ve got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs?
Out of the huts of history’s shame
I rise
Up from a past that’s rooted in pain
I rise

I’m a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.
Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear
I rise

Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise.

Texas Cop Suspended After Footage Emerges of Brutal Pool Party Arrests

On Saturday, video was uploaded to Youtube of police officers screaming at and arresting children at a community pool in Texas. One officer, confronted by two boys while grabbing a young girl by the neck and shoving her head towards the ground, pulls his gun and points it at them.

According to a police statement posted to Facebook, McKinney, Texas police responded on Friday evening to a “disturbance” call regarding a group of teenagers who “do not live in the area or have permission to be there.”

A fight had reportedly broken out at the Craig Ranch North Community Pool when the police were called. “When the cops showed up everyone ran, including the people who didn’t do anything,” the description of the Youtube video reads. “So the cops just started putting everyone on the ground and in handcuffs for no reason. This kind of force is uncalled for especially on children and innocent bystanders.”

From the police statement:

First responding officers encountered a large crowd that refused to comply with police commands. Nine additional units responded to the scene. Officers were eventually able to gain control of the situation.

McKinney Police later learned of a video that was taken at the scene by an unknown party. This video has raised concerns that are being investigated by the McKinney Police Department. At this time, one of the responding officers has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of this investigation.

The statement does not specify which of the responding officers has been suspended or which part of the video “raised concerns.” Was it, indeed, the part where an officer pulls his weapon on two unarmed boys? Or was it the part where he drives his knee into a teenage girl’s back—a girl who, in fact, was apparently following his orders to leave the area when he changed his mind and decided to arrest her—and screams in her face?

Then again, perhaps it was the part when he interrupts another officer who is trying to talk to a group of teenagers—two of whom return to him a flashlight dropped by an officer who was sprinting around tackling people—like human beings, wrestling one to the ground and yelling, “Get on the ground. I told you to stay.”

Later, this officer explains, “I personally told you to get on the ground and stay. What did you do when I walked away? You did what everybody else did, and what everybody else did was illegal. You did it, and you got caught. Now, you’re sitting here, paying for it.”

As it happens, it would appear that this is the same officer who pulled his gun for no reason. One can only imagine why two young black males would want to run away from such a person.
