Always fancied riveting one-handed like a super-hero factory worker, some kind of 21st centuryJohn Henry? No problem! Lockheed Martin’s Fortis exoskeleton–introduced in 2014–allows any worker to handle heavy hand tools while standing or kneeling. And it looks like the future.
The suit enables workers to be more productive with less fatigue or strain, and this image shows it off like the kind of sci-fi reality that it is. But it is not just about strength and stamina. Keith Maxwell, from Lockheed Martin, explains:
“Because the FORTIS exoskeleton is lightweight and mobile, a tool operator could easily wear it while making repairs or performing maintenance in areas that weren’t designed for stationary, bench-mounted tools, like in a ship’s engine compartment or the fuselage of an aircraft.”
Japanese construction firm Shimizu Corp just revealed their new project: An underwater city capable of fitting 5,000 people and draw its energy from the seabed. Shimizu says the project would take five years to build and the technology required would be ready in 15 years.

A new app for iOS brings video updates to said collection of names and numbers so “you can see what all your friends are up to.” The software is called Rinbw, and it replaces images for your pals that opt in with 5-second clips updated at will. You can also “fruit” a clip, which is the app’s term for letting folks know you’ve seen their latest work. And as you might expect, notifications alert you every time a fellow Rinbw user posts a new status. “Scrolling through your contact list used to be boring and unexciting. NASA has been planning to study the magnetic reconnection between the Earth and the sun for years, and now the agency has revealed how its scientists are going make it happen. Magnetic reconnection is a process that converts magnetic energy to kinetic or thermal energy. It happens all over the universe, but close to home, it occurs during solar flares, coronal mass ejections and when solar winds interact with the Earth’s magnetic field, causing aurorae. In order to study and create a 3D map of the mysterious phenomenon, NASA’s Magnetospheric Multiscale mission will send four spacecraft to space, which will position themselves in a pyramid.
A single rocket will carry all four (stacked on top of each other) to their destination, as you can see in the demo video of the launch below. Each one is designed to break free from the stack once the rocket reaches orbit, and to deploy its “booms” (or foldable, extendable limbs equipped with sensors needed for the study) once it gets in position. Barring delays, these spacecraft will launch in March 2015 to seek out parts near our planet where magnetic reconnection typically occurs, so that we may understand it better.

If a team of researchers from MIT and Texas A&M University have their way, wounded soldiers will have soon have a better chance of survival. The project is a biodegradable gelatin that once injected, helps with blood coagulation, cutting down on blood loss internally. In some trials, the hydrogel decreased the time it took for the blood to clot by 77 percent after it maneuvered into position. The medical solution is still in the testing phase, but once its perfected, researchers hope to see soldiers add preloaded syringes packed with the material to their gear arsenals.

The time to get to a medical facility can take a half hour to an hour, and this hour is crucial; it can decide life and death,” explains Akhilesh Gaharwar, assistant professor of biomedical engineering at Texas A&M. “Our material’s combination of injectability, rapid mechanical recovery, physiological stability and the ability to promote coagulation result in a hemostat for treating incompressible wounds in out-of-hospital, emergency situations.” What’s more, the group is currently working to develop the material into a two-stage treatment that aids with the regeneration of tissue, too.

Ever since Marty McFly first wore them in Back to the Future Part II, we’ve all dreamed of auto-lacing shoes. Nike has now said that a pair will launch in 2015, but despite that, a Canadian startup is taking to Kickstarter to try and beat the shoe giant to the punch with its Powerlace P-One shoes.
Despite their name, Powerlace shoes feature a non-electric system that relies on your body weight to tighten the laces. As soon as you step into the shoes, your heel presses down on a concealed disc that’s linked by wires to the laces. There’s a lever attached to the back of the shoe that allows you to release pressure to loosen the laces to your taste.
Visually, it’s unlikely the P-Ones will win many fans. They look like a typical pair of no-name running shoes, with huge and fairly unattractive “POWERLACE” branding plastered over their sides. The campaign is seeking an astronomically high $650,000 CAD (about $577,000) to make Powerlace a reality, with prices starting from $175 CAD ($155) for early birds and $195 CAD ($173) for everyone else. Should the campaign be successful, the first shoes are expected to ship next May. Given Nike’s unspecific “2015” date for its auto-lacing shoes, not even a successful campaign can guarantee that the P-Ones will still be “the world’s first” by the the time they ship. click here to watch video
