Phone tech support scam goes wrong | Malwarebytes Unpacked

Have you ever received a call from someone with a heavy Indian accent from Microsoft saying your computer had errors or viruses? The purpose of these calls is to get an easy $299 or whatever amount they choose by scaring you into thinking there’s something really wrong with your computer and that they can fix it for you. These telephony scams have been going on for many years and scammers keep robbing innocent people sadly because their success ratio is still worth their time and effort. It happens that I got ‘the call’ while minding my own business on a regular work day. I immediately recognized what this was all about and decided to play the game to see how far this would go.The caller’s number did not appear on my phone, a sign that they were using some Voice over IP VoIP or such technology that both completely hides their identity and costs them nothing for long distance calls. This scam is a well-oiled machine which starts off with the alleged Microsoft representative asking you to turn on your computer to perform some checks for errors. They essentially make you open different applications which aren’t typically known by regular users.  click below to read entire article

Sweden Is Closing Prisons Due to Lack of People to Put In Them

As the prison population spirals out of control in the United States, Sweden finds itself with an interesting and opposite predicament: it has too many prisons and not enough prisoners. For this reason, the Scandinavian country recently decided to shutter four prisons and a remand center. The issue isnt lack of crime in Sweden—in fact, the crime rate has actually increased slightly there—but rather a strong emphasis on rehabilitating criminals, rather than locking them up. The prison population declined 6 percent between 2011 and 2012. In the United States, by comparison, federal facilities are 40 percent over capacity.

iPhone 6 Specs: 2014 iPhones to jave curved 4.7 and 5.5-inch screens | BGR

Apple has said on several occasions that it doesn’t offer an iPhone with a larger display because such devices require too many user experience compromises. According to a new report, either Apple stopped caring about those compromises or it found ways around them. Numerous news organizations and analysts have claimed over the past few months that Apple is testing larger displays of varying sizes for its next-generation iPhone. The Wall Street Journal said Apple is testing displays up to 6 inches, Jefferies & Co. analyst Peter Misek said the iPhone 6 will sport a 4.8-inch display, DisplaySearch’s David Hsieh said Apple was toying with a 4.7-inch screen and a 5.7-inch screen, and the latest report suggested that Apple’s next-generation iPhone will feature a 5-inch 1080p display. Well, it looks like they were all wrong.Bloomberg on Sunday claimed to have confirmed that Apple is launching not one but two completely redesigned iPhone models next year. One will feature a display that measures 4.7 inches diagonally, perhaps the flagship “iPhone 6,” and the second will enter iPhablet territory with a 5.5-inch display nearly as large as the 5.7-inch panel on Samsung’s massive Galaxy Note 3.

Windows XP infections rates likely to jump once Microsoft support ends | BGR

It’s been a good run, but stragglers might consider finally making the jump to a more recent Windows operating system after reading this report. Tim Rains, Director of Trustworthy Computing at Microsoft, reminded Windows users last week on a TechNet blog post that Microsoft will no longer provide support for Windows XP after April 8th, 2014, effectively ending any security updates to the dying OS. Microsoft has already stopped supporting Windows XP Service Pack 2, and within two years “its malware infection rate was 66 percent higher than Windows XP Service Pack 3.”Similar results are expected in the months and years following the final updates for Service Pack 3, the last supported version of Windows XP. Whether or not you like Windows 8, the fact is that Microsoft’s most recent OS currently has an infection rate that is six times smaller than that of XP. If you are worried about malware and viruses, newer is almost always better.

How Earth’s coastlines would look if all ice melted (bye Florida!)

National Geographic made precise maps on how Earth would look in the case all the planet\’s ice melted. The bad news: New York, San Francisco, New Orleans, London and other cool cities would be completely gone. The good news: the entire state of Florida would disappear.

But that\’s the only good news. The rest is all bad: on top of the initial massive economic loss, a coastline change like this would provoke unprecedented population migrations across continents, which in turn would generate damage of apocalyptical proportions—pestilence, war, famine, and death would ensue across the globe.

Floating Generator Transforms the Oceans Motions into MegaWatts

While winds may die and clouds may obscure the sun, nothing can stop the rhythmic lapping of ocean waves. Now, an Australian company hopes to harness that power and covert it to usable electricity with the most powerful wave-energy generator ever created. And this is just their small-scale prototype.Dubbed the Oceanlinx, this 1 MW \”greenwave\” generator uses the oscillating motion of waves to power something called a Denniss-Auld turbine. This unique bi-directional airflow device, custom-built for the Oceanlinx, generates high-pressure air currents to drive an electrical turbine as the waves inside the concrete base pulse up and down.

Bullet-Stopping Cellphone Saves Gas Station Clerk Held at Gunpoint

In what’s some fantastic news for both HTC and anyone who keeps their cellphone in their shirt pocket, a Florida gas station attendant’s life was saved when his dearly departed smartphone became a martyr during a recent holdup.

Yesterday morning at 4:45AM in an Orlando suburb, a man entered a gas station, showed the working clerk his revolver, and demanded he open the safe. When the clerk was unable to do so, the robber instructed the second clerk to make an (also unsuccessful) attempt. Deciding to flee in the wake of his failure, the suspect fired a round “at one of the clerks” on his way out the door.

The attendant, who surely thought he was still in shock, didn’t even realize the cellphone had intercepted the bullet until he pulled it out of his shirt pocket. Chances are, few have ever been quite as happy as this man was to see a smartphone screen shattered beyond repair. [APvia Digg]
