This flame is made of pure water

Scientists have invented a new low-cost method to create a safe welding flame using water as its only fuel. Called the Safeflame, the device splits water in oxygen and hydrogen, recombining them both outside of the torch’s mouth to create fire. And the only byproduct is water.

In the past, this method was too pricey for wide adoption. The success of the Safeflame is that they have managed to make it a lot cheaper and also safer than traditional propane and acetylene torches, according to Andrew Ellis, one of the Safeflame researchers:

We’ve got a whole team of chemists working on new formulations of membrane, which have shown increases in the performance of the electrolyzer. We’ve also been doing lots of research on catalysts, trying to reduce the amount of platinum and looking into much cheaper materials that can be used in the cells. And this research has led to big reduction in the cost of electrolyzer systems.

Talking to Euronews, Ellis said that the new system has been “developed to use a standard mains electricity supply, and water. The water is split into hydrogen and oxygen gases and fed into a torch where a flame is produced, which can then be used for brazing or any other industrial application where flame is used. So it’s just using water to make a flame, basically.”

What’s more, the torch itself remains cold to the touch at all times because, according to the Ellis, “the flame, as it’s being produced, burns on the outside of the torch. And when you turn the flame off at the [end] of operation, the torch will also remain cold afterwards, so you can put it down anywhere you want.” In the video you can see the guy touching the torch’s tip even while it is in operation.

Scientists Discover Gold Literally Growing on Trees in the Outback

Every parents favorite line about how money doesnt grow on trees just became a little more irrelevant, thanks to a fascinating find down under. Researchers in Australia recently found gold—yes, real gold—in eucalyptus trees growing in the outback.A team of unlikely prospectors recently ventured into the arid land of the Goldfields-Esperance region in Western Australia, hoping to learn more about what was underneath its soil. The area earned its name for being rich in gold deposits—that were, however, notoriously difficult to find. So the researchers looked in an unlikely place: The trees.Eucalyptus trees in this region are known for their resiliency, and for roots that reach impossibly deep to find the groundwater needed to keep themselves alive. It just so turns out that the elusive gold deposits are down there, too.Chasing a longstanding rumor that the trees leaves get their gold luster from the deposits, the scientists analyzed the leaves of eucalyptus trees in the area—and sure enough, they found traces of gold. Apparently, the trees roots grew ten stories deep into the soil and absorbed gold particles from nearby deposits. To confirm that these particles came from the soil under the roots, they grew eucalyptus trees in gold-laced potting soil in a greenhouse. And sure enough—they found gold in those leaves, too.

Apple Will Announce the New iPads on Oct. 22nd

As was foretold by the ancients, Apple will hold its holiday iPad jamboree on October 22nd. Well see some new tablets, sure. But there also might be a trove of other odds and ends awaiting us next week. While Apple normally plants hints of whats to come in its invites, its not entirely clear that they have here; the color options are reminiscent of the iPhone palette, which could imply that the iPod touch is going to get a new color scheme, although there have been zero rumors to that effect. And the \”have a lot to cover\” could imply an improved Smart Cover design, or just an array of new Smart Cover colors. Or, you know, Apples just got more to talk about.

Clash of the titans: iOS 7 vs Android 4.3 comparison

One of the most heated \”debates\” within the wireless industry is the one between iOS and Android fans. In case it isnt obvious, weve put \”debate\” in quotes, because its much more of a flame war, rather than a civilized debate, but anyway, you get the point. And without further ado, lets dive straight into it.

Scientists Found the Remains of a Water-Covered Earth-Like Planet

A team of astrophysicists have made an exciting however complex discovery a mere 170 light years away. In their own words, its \”the first evidence of a water-rich rocky planetary body\” outside of our own solar system to have evidence of water. Its the \”rocky\” bit that makes it Earth-like.Hey, thats pretty exciting! An Earth-like planet covered in water just a few clicks across the galaxy—what a day! Well, its a little more complicated than that. Scientists didnt actually find the planet itself but rather \”its shattered remains.\” The debris used to be a tiny planet composed of 26 percent water, but about 200 million years ago, the star that it was orbiting—creatively named GD 61—started to die. Before becoming a white dwarf, GD 61 devoured the water-covered planet and any other bodies in the system.

How to Use Your Smartphone As an Essential Part of Your Disaster Kit

Generally speaking you don\’t want to rely on technology at all in your disaster toolkit, but that doesn\’t mean you can\’t make use of an old smartphone (or your current one for that matter). Before the cell networks are down, here\’s what you should load up on your smartphone.P

We\’ve talked about various disaster kits you need to have in the house and any good disaster kit is enough to get you through at least 72 hours without power, food, or water. Those certainly cover your basic survival needs, but if you need guides for living on your own, a backup of data, or anything similar, you can also turn to your smartphone.
