A Single Neck Injection Could Cure PTSD

What if doctors could cure post-traumatic stress disorder with a single injection to the neck? One Chicago-area doctor claims he can, and has finally convinced someone in the Pentagon to give the idea a shot. And Danger Room has learned that some in the Navy believe the approach might actually work. The freaky procedure is called stellate-ganglion block SGB. Its the brainchild of Chicago anesthesiologist Dr. Eugene Lipov. Hes touted the method for years, even winning then-Senator Barack Obamas support in 2007, and hes treated dozens of military personnel and veterans at his own clinic.Until recently, Lipov was largely ignored by Pentagon brass and military doctors. All four of his applications for military research funding were denied. The most recent rejection came just last month.

Windows 8.1 Will Start At $120 or not

If you’ve got a Windows 8 device, you can download the update for free. To upgrade an older device, a download or an old-school DVD installation disc will set you back $120, $200 for Windows 8.1 Pro. The new software will be a full version, rather than just an upgrade — good for folks building systems from scratch, but Windows 7 users will have to reinstall all desktop apps, and Microsoft says the new version isn’t designed for XP or Vista users (though such folks can backup all files and do a clean 8.1 install)

Stop Worrying About the New iPhones Fingerprint Scanner

Last weeks announcement that the new iPhone 5 will include a fancy new fingerprint scanning security system was met with a chorus of protests. What if someone lifts my prints and makes a fake finger and unlocks my phone? What if the government snoops on my phone more than it already does and steals my fingerprints?? Oh God, what if muggers cut off my thumbs to unlock my phone when they steal it?!? Relax. None of thats going to happen. Heres why.First, a quick rundown of how the tech actually works. When you set up your new iPhone 5, its TouchID fingerprint scanner registers one of your prints and stores that data locally in the phones secure A7 chip. From that moment onward, if you have TouchID enabled, every time you press your finger against the home button/capacitance scanner the phone matches the current print with the registered version and, if they match, unlocks the phone. Whats more, the new iPhone 5 will also reportedly employ RF signals to “see” through the uppermost, dead layers of finger skin and image the living tissue immediately below.

Why the iPhone 5c will sell well its not about you | iMore

Some in the tech press and analysts have been quite vocal about their ambivalence occasionally dipping into outright loathing about the iPhone 5c. Im excited about it. Im not excited about owning one – I already have an iPhone 5 – but Im glad to see Apple do it. Because I think Apples going to sell a lot of them.If youre a spec-monkey, the iPhone 5c gives you cause for your ambivalence. Its largely unchanged from the iPhone 5, except for higher-quality FaceTime camera on the front and a slightly larger battery. But heres the thing, its not for you.

First grid-scale compressed air battery now operational

Compressed air batteries have long promised truly clean energy storage, but they havent scaled large enough in recent years to be viable companions to renewable power sources. That changes now that SustainX has switched on the first modern air battery large enough to join an electrical grid. The companys new ICAES Isothermal Compressed Air Energy Storage system in Seabrook, New Hampshire can hold 1.5 megawatts of power versus the kilowatt-level capacities of its rivals. Despite its size, ICAES is sustainable; it doesnt require dirty energy for either compression or releasing air to its generator, and the supply wont degrade like that of a chemical battery. The New Hampshire system is just a demonstrator to attract interest, but SustainX expects to have its first commercial battery running in China next year. If ICAES and technology like it proves successful, we could see more solar and wind farms that keep delivering electricity when theyre otherwise idle.

Beyoncé Responds Gracefully After Being Pulled Off Stage By Fan

A Beyoncé fan went too far Sunday night, pulling the singer off the stage during her performance in Sao Paulo.Security reacted promptly, quickly pulling Beyoncé back to the stage, but the situation had all the signs of turning ugly as the shirtless fan was forcefully escorted from the venue. The performer, though, reacted with grace and tact, calming the crowd and saying that “everything is all right.”In fact, the singer took it a step further, shaking hands with the fan, saying, “Thank you. I love you, too.” The performance then continued with a huge approval of the crowd, who chanted “Beyoncé, Beyoncé.

Though she surely didnt appreciate being grabbed and pulled off the stage, Beyoncés calm demeanor saved the day, especially for the fan who chose a very odd way to show his appreciation.Image: Buda Mendes/Getty Images

World’s First Invisible Tower Gets The Go-Ahead

Having spent an exorbitant amount of energy bemoaning the rise of vanity projects and novelty skyscrapers in recent weeks, a new tower set to rise on the outskirts of Seoul brings with it the tantalizing possibility of critical respite.

GDS Architects has proclaimed its Tower Infinity an “Anti-Landmark.” At first glance, however, this glacial spire appears to bear the same obnoxious, formalistic hallmarks of conceited icons elsewhere—I’m looking at you, Citylife Milano.

But all is not what it seems. With the aid of a cunning web of cameras and projections, this skyscraper can, at the flick of a switch, disappear into the night sky! A magical piece of technological ingenuity, or a cynical new branch of architectural exhibitionism? Only one thing is certain: this Houdini act sends a mixed message about the true motives of its developers…

Scientists Have Found a Huge Underground Water Reserve in Kenya

This is incredible. Scientists have found an underground water reserve in Kenya so large that it could meet the entire countrys water needs for the next 70 years. Using satellite, radar and geological technology, scientists found an aquifer—an underground layer of water-bearing material—that contains 200 billion cubic meters of fresh water.UNESCO and the Kenyan government put together a team to find water in Kenya. The just discovered Lotikipi Basin Aquifer, which is about 1000 feet underground, measures 62 miles by 41 miles and is significantly larger than other aquifers discovered in the region. In fact, it holds 900% more water than whats in Kenyas current reserves. Just look at the size of this thing: click below for more
