Apple confirms September 10th iPhone event, and well be there live!

The next iPhone will be presumably unveiled on September 10th, as hinted at on the Apple-delivered invite that you see above. When the curtains pull back, itll be nearly a year to the day since the iPhone 5 was ushered into reality, and itll no doubt be a monumentally important day for the company. Particularly compared to the barrage of products Apple introduced in 2012 — iPad mini, iPhone 5, the MacBook Pro with Retina display, enhanced MacBook Air / iMac / Mac mini lines, a redesigned iPod nano, a revised iPad / iPod touch / Apple TV, ad OS X Mountain Lion — 2013 has been eerily quiet. Outside of a tweaked iPhone 5 for T-Mobiles network, a Haswell-infused MacBook Air and a tease of the next-generation Mac Pro, weve been left with little more than hopes for newly-inspired versions of iOS and OS X.That changes on the 10th of September, as at the very least, were expecting a next-gen iPhone to hit the stage. Well also be holding out hope for a lower-end iPhone 5C for emerging markets — markets where Android and even Windows Phone are the platforms of choice for communities making the move into the smartphone era. We wouldnt put it past Apple to also revise its iPad line while its at it, and naturally, iOS 7 should be just about primed for release to the masses. As youd expect, well be on hand in Cupertino in order to liveblog every second of the action, and wed invite you to cast your best guesses on whats to come in comments below.

PHOTOS: Record-breaking alligators caught in Mississippi | Bay News 9

During the first weekend of Mississippi’s alligator season a hunting party from Madison held the weight record for an alligator taken in the state. But the record only lasted about an hour.
Beth Trammell took a 13-foot, 5.5-inch long, 723.5-pound alligator early Sunday in Issaquenna County in the Yazoo Diversion Canal. It broke the previous weight record of 697.5 pounds.
However, Ricky Flynt from the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks tells WLBT TV that one hour after he certified Trammell’s record, he certified another record-breaking gator.
Dustin Bockman, a UPS driver from Vicksburg, took the 727-pound alligator in the Mississippi River in Claiborne County. It was 13-feet, 4.5-inches long.

Modern Mans Guide to Being a Gentleman

gentlemanYou’ve heard it before: Chivalry is dead. Well, yes and no. The once-romantic and noble code of conduct for medieval knights may seem outdated when you find yourself on a Friday night elbowing your way through a crowd to get a bartenders attention. But chivalry is at its heart, a way of showing respect and gallantry. And while that sometimes takes a backseat in this age of modern conveniences and self-interest, all is not lost. There are simple steps a man can take when he goes out to show that hes got some honor. Herewith, your cheat sheet to modern-day manners.

Can Humans Breathe Liquid?

Deep water and the unprotected human body dont play well together—like, at all. But what if there were a way to get around the bodys chemical limitations, a means of deep diving without the bends or lengthy decompression? Actually, there is. And weve almost figured out how to do it without killing ourselves in the process. The Dangers of DeepThe recommended absolute limit for recreational SCUBA divers is just 130 feet, and technical dives using Trimix bottom out at 330. Even then, youve got less than five minutes at depth before requiring monitored decompression to avoid getting the bends the not-scary word for when nitrogen dissolves into your tissue under the massive pressure of the water column, is ejected into the bloodstream during ascent, and you die of a brain embolism. Interestingly though, once your body hits its nitrogen saturation limit, it doesnt matter if you stay down for an hour or a month; your decompression time effectively maxes out. This technique, known as saturation diving, is how recovery divers working on the K-141 Kursk were able to spend hours 300 feet below sea level amidst 10 atmospheres of pressure and how the crew in The Abyss were able to do their jobs.

7 Up Used to Include Prescription Mood Stabilizers

Today I found out that the soft drink 7 UP used to include a psychiatric medication as one of its ingredients. The lemon-lime flavored soda, 7 UP was created by Charles Grigg of the Howdy Corporation in 1929 and first launched two weeks before the stock market crash that spurred the Great Depression… Timing! It was originally named “Bib-Label Lithiated Lemon-Lime Soda”, and included lithium citrate in its formula.Lithium citrate is a mood-stabilizing drug that was popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and is still used sometimes today for people with bipolar disorder, among others. Many of the first sodas to be produced included drugs or metals and were often touted as health drinks. For instance, Coca Cola originally included coca leaves hence contained a small amount of cocaine in its formula and was intended to be a coca-wine cure-all, specifically targeted at curing impotence, dyspepsia, neurasthenia, headaches, nausea, and morphine addiction, the latter of which was a problem the inventor of Coca Cola, Dr. John Pemberton, suffered from.

Is the Brain Project the Apollo of Our Time?

This spring, President Obama announced what could be this generation’s defining national science effort — an ambitious mission to map the human brain. In its size and scope, the project could claim a place in human culture on par with previous landmarks, like the moon landings and the Human Genome Project, experts say.

Big, national science efforts do more than just direct the science-funding spigot; they can also become a part of the culture. These kinds of national undertakings seep into the arts, pop culture — and the popular consciousness, said Cyrus Mody, a professor of science, technology and engineering at Rice University. “People start to think in the terms that define these projects.”

The brain-mapping initiative (officially BRAIN, for Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Technlogies) headlines a series of White House “Grand Challenges,” defined as “ambitious goals on a national or global scale that capture the imagination.” The point, then, is not simply to tackle big questions, but also to shape the culture.
