Get Google and iOS Living Together in Perfect Harmony

No matter what kind of phone you use, a lot of us are pretty dependent on Google for organizing our lives. Luckily, you can actually get Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Voice, and other services working great with iOS—it just takes a little bit of setup. Here’s what you need to do.

Obviously, if you’re really entrenched in Google services, your other option is to just use Android—after all, Android has a lot of features you can’t get on iOS. However, iOS has its own specialties, and if you have your heart set on iOS’ fantastic interface and app library, there’s no reason being a Gmail user should hold you back.

Sync Gmail with iOS Mail

When it comes to Gmail, we think Sparrow ($3) is the best way to get your email on iOS. It has everything that makes Gmail great: support for labels, the ability to archive and delete messages, and a fantastic interface designed to work with the iPhone.

AT&T FaceTime FCC net neutrality complaint filed

AT&T’s T decision to limit FaceTime over its cellular network to shared data plan subscribers hasn’t been very popular with many iPhone users, but a new report from GigaOM suggests that government regulators might not like it very much either. According to GigaOM, several open-Internet advocacy groups have told AT&T that they intend to file a complaint with the Federal Communications Commission alleging that the carrier’s FaceTime policies violate the network neutrality restrictions passed by the FCC back in 2010.Matt Wood, the policy director of the Free Press, said that his group was taking part in the complaint because “AT&T’s decision to block FaceTime unless a customer pays for voice and text minutes she doesn’t need is a clear violation of the FCC’s Open Internet rules” while adding that “it’s particularly outrageous that AT&T is requiring this for iPad users, given that this device isn’t even capable of making voice calls.”But while many AT&T subscribers may cheer Wood’s sentiment, the FCC’s wireless net neutrality rules are so loose that it’s not clear that AT&T violated them at all. The real question is whether or not AT&T is giving different treatment to any of its own video calling apps over its cellular network, as the FCC’s guidelines forbid carriers from blocking applications that compete directly with the their own voice or video telephony services.

Did the Reign of Dinosaurs Begin, as Well as End, with a Meteorite Strike?: Scientific American

STOCKTON, N.J.— A huge meteorite strike may have helped the dinosaurs rise as well as fall. That’s what a small crew of mud-spattered researchers who drilled down hundreds of feet in New Jersey this summer wanted to discover.

Roughly 200 million years ago, at least half the species on Earth died off over the course of about 100,000 years, both on land and in sea. This mass extinction, at the boundary between the Triassic and Jurassic periods and one of five known such events in Earth’s geologic history, set the stage for dinosaurs to rise to prominence and dominate the planet’s terrestrial life for the next 135 million years.

The quest for answers regarding dinosaurs and the end-Triassic mass extinction had previously led paleontologist Paul Olsen and his colleagues at Columbia University’s Lamont –Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO) to globe-trot to around cities in Morocco and along sea cliffs in the U.K . digging up clues from that past era. This summer, it brought them to the Kell family’s yard in western New Jersey—the area holds one of the most visible examples of the Triassic– Jurassic boundary.

Airlines playing chicken with passengers, charging you-get-to-sit-with-your-kid fee – Red Tape

You know about airline change fees, baggage fees, premium seat fees and food fees. But how about a “you-get-to-sit-with-your-child” fee?John Parish is giving his 5-year-old daughter the birthday present every child dreams of: a trip to Disney World. But hes afraid American Airlines has booked a travel nightmare for his family and other fliers. Theres only one way out of the nightmare, he was told: Pay an additional fee, months after booking the trip.Parish bought his tickets months ago, in March, and scored three seats together on a flight from Dallas to Orlando, Fla., for his wife, Amanda, and daughter, Megan. Then, in July, bad news arrived. American Airlines had changed the flight schedule for the return trip, and it had changed the plane, too. It was a bigger plane, but no longer could the family sit together. In fact, Megan had been moved onto the other side of the plane, rows away.

This Looks Like the First Photo of a Fully Working iPad Mini

Knowing the accuracy of the iPhone 5 leaks and the increased number of photos of the 7.8-inch iPad parts from the same sources, I have almost no doubt that this is a real, fully working Apple iPad mini. That means that the launch must be really close right now.The Chinese site Bolopad claims that these are exclusive shots of the real McCoy. Looking at past evidence, Im afraid that we will have to believe them. It looks like all the other parts we have seen before: the holy daughter of a virgin iPad and the original JesusPhone.I have to admit that Im starting to think that all these leaks cant be just a coincidence. The iPhone 5 has been the most broadly leaked product in Apples history. The new iPad mini is going to be the next. It almost feels like Apple is letting these products out of the factories to control market expectations and backlash from the press and consumers. Or perhaps Foxconns workers are getting smarter at smuggling them out the factory. Or things have gotten so massive that its impossible to control.

NASA Starts Work on Real Life Star Trek Warp Drive

“Perhaps a Star Trek experience within our lifetime is not such a remote possibility.” These are the words of Dr. Harold “Sonny” White, the Advanced Propulsion Theme Lead for the NASA Engineering Directorate. Dr. White and his colleagues don’t just believe a real life warp drive is theoretically possible; they’ve already started the work to create one.

Yes. A real warp drive, Scotty.

When it comes to space exploration, we are still cavemen. We got to the Moon and sent some badass robot to Mars. We also have those automatic doors that swoosh wide open when you get near them, but that’s about it. It’s cool, but we are far from being the space civilization we’ll need to become to survive for millennia.

With our current propulsion technologies, interstellar flight is impossible. Even with experimental technology, like ion thrusters or a spaceship’s aft pooping freaking nuclear explosions, it would require staggering amounts of fuel and mass to get to any nearby star. And worse: it will require decades—centuries, even—to get there. The trip will be meaningless for those left behind. Only the ones going forward in search for a new star system would enjoy the result of the colossal effort. It’s just not practical.

iPhone 5 line photos: Customers line up a week early for iPhone 5

It looks like Samsung’s 005930 next run of anti-iPhone commercials just wrote themselves. Apple’s AAPL most recent iPad launch was somewhat quiet compared to past launches thanks to more efficient pre-sales and supply that actually exceeded demand, but it looks like Apple’s iPhone 5 launch will not follow suit. As reported by Fortune on Sunday afternoon, lines of customers waiting to purchase Apple’s next-generation iPhone from the flagship 5th Avenue Apple Store in New York had already begun to form more than five days before Apple is scheduled to release its new handset. Each of the people on line Sunday were reportedly there on business of some sort, however, promoting their companies or even their band, as was the case with a pair of cousins who lined up on Sunday. Hazem Sayed and his marketing head Sage were the first to line up outside the Apple Store at 8:00 a.m. last Thursday, eight days before the iPhone is set to launch on September 21st.

How NYCs Underground Park Will Stay Well-Lit and Alive

Winter makes you crazy because you spend so much time cooped up without fresh air or sunlight. With that in mind, some people in New York City have plans in the works for an underground park—the Lowline—to be built in an abandoned trolley station and lit through a remote skylight system.
