DARPA wants hackers’ help to go on the ‘cyber-attack’ offensive | The Verge

It’s been a rough week for digital security in the USA, with China accused of hacking satellites and stealing secrets (claims they deny). Now it looks like the United States is planning on better readying itself for electronic threats by bumping up its cyber arsenal, both offensive and defensive. At an event dubbed the “cyber colloquium,” DARPA stated it needed to beef up its network security, and asked for academics, researchers, and “visionary hackers” to help it do so. With cyber-attacks a very real threat, DARPA wants to move away from plugging leaks, and on to prevent them from happening in the first place. The agency also has its sights set on being more prepared to use those capabilities offensively.

“Malicious cyber-attacks are not merely an existential threat to our bits and bytes; they are a real threat to our physical systems, including our military systems,” said DARPA director Regina Dugan. For this new initiative, DARPA has secured a large amount of money to put towards cyber research, jumping up to $208 million this year from $128 million last year — and they expect it to continue growing. DARPA has a legacy of funding insane and awesome projects, and we’ve seen some recent cyber security releases from the group. It should be interesting to see how they can put hackers’ talents to use

Non-Mad Scientists Say They’ll Turn Rice into Blood

It sounds like an act of witchcraft, but it’s actually the cutting edge of medicine—on paper, at least. Researchers at China’s Wuhan University say they can grow genetically engineered rice that yields blood. Human blood. Blood rice.

The trick lies in embedding human genes within the rice DNA, the Telegraph reports, which creates a protein needed for Human Serum Albumin—a valuable blood extract used in transfusions.

Watch an Innocent Guy Get Shot with a Rubber Bullet By the Oakland Police for No Reason

Scott Campbell was peacefully filming Occupy Oakland when he was shot with a projectile by the police. For no freaking reason. Seriously, unless cameras are the new guns, he did nothing wrong! Its disturbing to see the police, people who are supposed to serve and protect, attack an innocent man like this.

Scientists Create the Definitive Flu Killer

University of Texas Southwesterns scientists have created a new flu vaccine that can protect us against any kind of flu, not just one type. Unlike the current type of vaccines, this can even protect us if the virus mutates.Thats the big problem of the current vaccines: every year, medical experts guess whats going to be the dominant flu strain and create a vaccine using a weakened version of that virus. If that virus mutates, the vaccines becomes useless, which is why people get the flu even when they get vaccinated.

Sprint to nix ‘unlimited’ from mobile broadband and hotspot plans in November – Engadget

We’d heard rumblings that unlimited data for Sprint’s mobile hotspot plan was going the way of the dodo, but come November folks, it’ll be official. Data sent and received over tethering — not smartphone usage — will now be measured against a 5GB cap. The same applies to mobile broadband subscribers, who will lose “unlimited” WiMax, instead having all their bits counting towards 3GB, 5GB or 10GB buckets (as seen above). Going over your allotment in either plan naturally incurs overages, which could get pricey at 5 cents per MB, and worst of all, existing unlimited plans won’t be grandfathered in. So, start counting down those last few days of limitless bliss, as you weep peeping the full details that await at the source.

MetroPCS may be top contender for AT&T’s post-acquisition assets — Engadget

The likelihood of a successful acquisition of T-Mobile by AT&T may largely depend on what the latter is willing to give up. The largest GSM carrier in the US may need to throw a few assets overboard in order to satisfy the Department of Justice, and has reportedly been Rethinking Possible by engaging in discussions with several parties interested in scooping up the leftovers. According to Bloomberg, MetroPCS appears to be the frontrunner in the talks, and plans to meet with the Justice Department (alongside AT&T, of course) in the next two weeks to determine if the strategy will appease the regulating body. No guarantees here, of course: it seems like a lot of assets would have to change hands for MetroPCS — a regional carrier with roughly nine million subscribers — to be considered a large enough competitor to assuage the government’s concerns here. We can’t imagine the Feds would be satisfied with any small offering, considering the Department’s filed a lawsuit against Ma Bell to block the merger. We have a feeling this saga is just starting to get real interesting, so stay tuned.
