Myriad’s Remarkz HTML 5 web annotation app hands-on — Engadget

It wasn’t that long ago that Myriad gave us an exclusive sneak peek at its platform agnostic Android app emulator, Alien Dalvik 2.0. While we were there, the company gave us a glimpse of another project, called Remarkz, that piqued our interest. Remarkz is a slick little HTML 5 application that lets users annotate web pages with text and drawings and share the marked up pages via email, Facebook and Twitter. As opposed to using screen grab programs like Skitch or Jing, Remarkz keeps the web page links live and only requires adding a bookmark to get started. Additionally, a timeline feature lets you see when new notes are made on a page and who made them — giving it greater potential for use as a collaboration tool. True to Myriad form, it works on any platform (tablets, PCs and Macs) using any browser that supports HTML 5. It’s still in beta for now, but the app works pretty well despite a small bug here or there. Plus, given its egalitarian nature, Myriad hinted that we may see it on more screens (think big) in January at CES, which would up its cool quotient considerably. Interested? Check out a video walkthrough of the app after the break, and hit the source to start using it yourself.

Our Divided Brains Might Be Making Us Unhappy: A Plea for a More Right-Brained World

Iain McGilchrist, psychiatrist, author, and my new favorite person, tells us that so many of the left versus right brain arguments from the ’60s and ’70s have been disproven—for example that emotion and language are controlled by the left hemisphere and that the right hemisphere controls visual images and reason. All of those things are important throughout the brain. So, “in a fit of despair,” as McGilchrist says, people have given up talking about it.

Microsoft Office team shares vision of the future | TiPb

The Microsoft Office team has put out a video showing a vision of the future where edge-to-edge, interactive, multitouch and gesture-based panels are everywhere. We’ve seen things like this before in movies like Minority Report and Iron Man, and even ye old Bill Gates CES Keynotes of yore. Apple would never produce a video like this — they want to surprise us with “magical” technology shipping in weeks and month. That’s why it’s great we have more players in the market than just Apple. You have to make the future, you can’t dream it. But you can help inform and inspire it.

Now all that remains to be seen is whether most of those screens end up having Apple, Microsoft, or Google logos on the back of them…

Nokia Kinetic Device offers a new twist on smartphone interaction (hands-on video) | This is my next…

Nokia’s Future Technology booth here at Nokia World 2011 has one undisputed standout demo: the Kinetic Device. So called because of the way users are supposed to interact with it, the Kinetic Device is extremely flexible and responds to being bent and twisted to navigate its simple UI. It’s built entirely out of plastic, which includes the bendy and attractive AMOLED display up front, and contains only the hardware required to power it and to sense user input. That means no phone functionality, no camera, no GPS, and no superfluous capacitive touchscreens. You’ll be right in consequently supposing that it’s not the most mature project Nokia has brewing in its labs, though the experience of actually using it was pleasing, reliable, and somewhat addictive.

Would You Use Dollar Coins if It Saved the Government $5.6 Billion?

The recently-assembled super-committee tasked with saving the US from financial disaster by years end wants to trade dollar bills for dollar…coins? Wait, dont we already have some of those that nobody uses? This controversial plan has been floated before but has met with a tepid response from most Americans and strong lobbying efforts from both paper and mining industries and the states in which those industries reside. However, a recent study by the Government Accountability Office found that the coins longer lifetime—4.2 years vs. 22 months for bills—would translate into a $5.6 billion savings over the course of 30 years.

Japans Incredible Flying Sphere Hovers Its Way Into My Heart

We’ve seen Japans magic flying ball before, but this is the demo where the fumbly bumbly spheroid finally won my heart. The device could be used for reconnaissance, search and rescue, or as the worlds greatest piñata. Also: its adorable. The sphere hovers like a helicopter but because its designed like a prop-based aircraft, can tilt forward and accelerate quicker than a traditional chopper. With the help of three on-board gyroscopes, the sphere can handle running into objects and being struck without falling to the Earth. Airborne control isnt the devices only trick, on the ground pilots can roll the sphere to destinations and easily set it back into the sky.
