This Is Apple’s Steve Jobs Tribute

For the past two weeks, Apple has been collecting messages to and about Steve Jobs at rememberingsteve@apple.com. The most moving of those can now be seen on a simple, scrolling page at apple.com/stevejobs. You can still send a message if you haven’t already, or read through the rest of the world’s farewells. The Best New Features in Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich

Google just unveiled their new Nexus phone, the Galaxy Nexus, along with a preview of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, coming to phones next year. Here’s a look at the creamy new update to the Android operating system.

Most of what’s gone into Ice Cream Sandwich is polish, making Android slicker, easier to use, and (finally) more consistent across the board. It’s mostly filled with small improvements and tweaks that Google rattled off pretty quickly, so we’ve listed our favorites here in bulleted form. This isn’t a comprehensive list; this is just what Google demoed at today’s event—so there’s probably even more to come.

Correction: Dubai Is Blade Runner

Earlier today, we broke the news that Dubai has become Star Wars. I regret to inform you that this dispatch was factually flawed: Dubai is, in fact, Blade Runner, as proven by these exclusive pics from photog Gerald Donovan.

Dubai Is Star Wars

Dubai shrouded in fog. The Atlantic’s Alexis Madrigal puts it perfectly: “I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a city look more like ‘the future’ than this one at this moment.” All that’s missing is Lando Calrissian.

Urban consultant Noah Raford tweeted this pic while on a trip to Dubai, high above the haze. All that’s left are the crowns of Dubai’s innumerable skyscraper, poking through like starships in a nebula. There’s an ugly side to the emirate’s urban explosion—sprawl, human rights abuses, pollution—but I can’t think of anywhere else on earth that feels like Sim City 2000 brought to life. Siri ported to an iPhone 4, old phone learns a new trick (Update: Better performance!) — Engadget

Apple’s iPhone 4 may not have the fancy dual core CPU of its successor, but thanks to the efforts of developer Steven Troughton-Smith and the folks at 9to5 Mac, it may soon have Siri. The port of the sultry voice assistant was accomplished by using the 4S Siri and Springboard files, and some serious elbow grease, no doubt. As you can see in the video below, it’s far from perfect, but it can recognize spoken commands without issue. Currently, the hack is missing an iPhone 4 GPU driver that keeps things running buttery smooth on the elder phone, and Cupertino won’t authenticate Siri’s commands coming from it either. So, it isn’t quite ready for primetime, but it should only be a matter of time before all you iPhone 4 owners can tell Siri what to do, too.

Update: And in the space of just a few hours, Mr. Troughton-Smith has already managed to improve performance of the app on the iPhone 4 significantly, although Apple’s servers are still unreachable. Check out a newer YouTube video showing off some seriously smooth scrolling action after the break. [Thanks, Ramzi]

How to Make iMessage Work Better Across Multiple Devices

My significant other and I share and iTunes account (don’t tell!), so after I updated my iPad and her iPhone, she started receiving all my iMessages. Whoops! Turns out, though, it’s easy to associate different identities to different devices in iMessages, even if they share the same Apple ID—handy if you share an account with someone, have multiple iDevices of your own and want to set up separate buckets, or just want to change the address you send or receive message from (your “Caller ID”). Here’s how.

Get 50GB Free Storage for iOS

Sure, iCloud gives you 5GB of free storage. How cute! Box.net just blew it out of the water. For the next 50 days, it is offering iOS users 50 GB of free storage. It’s a pirate’s bounty!

Not only is it a pretty sweet deal, but it’s also one bereft of any significant fineprint. While a lot of offers like these expire after a certain term, or only open to new users, this one is neither. It’s open to anyone, and lasts forever. Go get it. [Box.net via Mathew Ingram]
