Microsoft’s Mouse Without Borders: the KVM that killed the KVM (video) — Engadget

Until now, running multiple computers with one keyboard and mouse has tended to require KVMs or wormholes, but Microsoft developer Truong Do has a better idea. Working at Microsoft’s Garage — Redmond’s after-hours pet project program — he built Mouse Without Borders: software that lets you control computers on the same wireless network with one set of inputs as if it was one machine with a multiple display. Up to four systems can be tied together and the software also provides for seamless drag-and-drop file transfer. Microsoft is releasing it free of charge at the source link, plus you can see Truong Do talking up his creation after the break. [Direct link to download]

Ford Evos cloud-connected concept car unveiled at Frankfurt — Engadget

The Evos is said to be a “cloud-connected” car, learning your preferences and connecting to these great internets to pull down details like traffic, road issues and points of interest. That’s all standard stuff, but it’ll also determine your driving ability plus driving intents and tailor the suspension and driving modes appropriately.

It’s a plug-in hybrid, so it can run as a full electric for at least part of its 500 mile total range. And, thanks to that connected nature we just mentioned, it’ll even look at the layout of the roads ahead and switch between EV and normal modes appropriately. Finally, it can detect the heart rate of the driver, who is situated in a red leather throne Ford calls “the hot seat.” That’s just one of four seats, exposed by four gull-wing doors.

Stop Turning Everything into a Game

Foursquare is about getting points for grabbing dinner, not enjoying the food. Nike+ puts the emphasis on a leader board, not a leaner you. And now Badgeville wants to turn the entire internet into a game. This is really awful.Gameification is a stupid made up word that describes an even stupider trend. Its simple: instead of doing something for its own sake, youre tempted with arbitrary, worthless arcade-y rewards. I get a badge on Foursquare for going to a bar. A little cluster of pixels. Your friends see the badge. They gaze at my pixels. My brain releases a small dosage of some chemical that makes me glimmer on the inside—Ive been acknowledged! Ive accomplished something! Except all that Ive accomplished is going to a bar—something millions of people are doing constantly, and I would have done sans Foursquare. So why should I care?

Adobe finally brings Flash to iPhone and iPad

During the IBC trade show in Amsterdam on Friday, Adobe officially took the wraps off of its new Adobe Flash Media Server 4.5 and Adobe Flash Access 3.0 products, which will allow iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users to access Adobe Flash content. Apple, which has long rejected Adobe’s Flash technology, doesn’t need to approve the tech for it to work, either. “With Adobe Flash Media Server 4.5, media publishers now have a single, simple workflow for delivering content using the same stream to Flash-enabled devices or to the Apple iPhone and iPad,” Adobe said in a statement. Flash Media Server 4.5 allows publishers to stream Flash content to iOS devices, which means support within the iOS Safari browser is not required. Instead of relying on a device’s processor to render the stream, which often degrades battery life and slows a device down, Adobe’s Flash Media Server 4.5 does all the legwork. Adobe Flash Media Server is available immediately to publishers for $4,500. Read on for the full press release.

Sprint to offer iPhone 5 in October with unlimited data

Sprint will offer the iPhone 5 in mid-October and will bundle it with an unlimited data plan, Bloomberg reported on Friday. The carrier hopes its unlimited data plan offering will attract customers away from AT&T and Verizon Wireless, which both cap iPhone data packages. Sprint currently offers all-you-can eat data and voice plans and its Everything Data plan starts out at $69.99 per month with 450 peak minutes. “The advantage of unlimited is, it’s cheaper for the big users,” Bank of Montreal analyst Peter Rhamey explained to Bloomberg, noting that unlimited plans are attractive because “people don’t like bill shock.” Bloomberg’s report is on a par with a recent Wall Street Journal article that also suggested Sprint will begin selling the iPhone 5 in October. In addition, BGR exclusively reported that Best Buy is anticipating selling a Sprint-branded iPhone 5 and that pre-orders should begin soon.

Swarovski Contact Lenses « MAMi

Designer Anthony Mallier from India has created Sparkle contact lenses to make your eyes Sparkle like they’ve never sparkled before. The Sparkle contact lenses are fused with tiny Swarovski crystals in a circle around the edges of the lenses.

The Sparkle contact lenses are the second place winner in the Crystal Vision competition co-organized by designboom and Swarovski. Mallier took the Crystal Vision theme literally when he designed the crystal eye bling. The competition had 4074 entries from 92 countries.

Mallier relates, Swarovski has been synonymous with adding that extra sparkle to everyday life. Swarovski crystals have the power to transform the ordinary into something extraordinary through their sheer brilliance. Sparkle is one such attempt to enhance the expression of one of our most expressive features: our eyes.

Contact Lenses Made from Diamonds & Gold Are Too Much Bling

Im all for spending money anyway you want to—grills, watches, boulder-sized rings, blinging chains—but come on, paying $15,000 for diamond and gold contact lenses is stupid. When did sacrificing your eyes become cool? Conceptualized and designed by two guys with too much time and money, Dr Chandrashekhar Chawan and Sanjay Shah, the contact lenses are adorned with 18 diamonds on a gold plate set 6-9mm from the cornea. The diamond contacts are limited to 3,996 pairs and will cost $15,000. Its as if someone saw the Swarovski crystal contacts and thought those werent extravagantly dumb enough. Diamonds are pretty sharp, people. [Born Rich]

Windows 8 Boots Up Faster Than a Bull Ride

What’s Microsoft got to compete with the MacBook Air’s near-instant on? According to this recent demonstration from its Building Windows 8 blog, the ability to take a machine from fully powered off to booted up in just under eight seconds.

The key change behind the improvement? In Windows 7, all user sessions are closed, as are services and devices in the kernel session. Windows 8, though, doesn’t close the kernel session. It puts it in hibernation mode. By writing the kernel session to a disk—instead of having to restore it completely with every start up—Microsoft has seen improved boot times of 30-70%.

If you want a complete shutdown, you’ll still have the option to revert back to Windows 7-style. But why drive a Volvo when you can roll in a… uh… 30% faster Volvo?
