Watch Michael J. Fox Show Off the Nike Air Mag on Letterman

Michael J. Fox showed up on The Late Show with David Letterman last night to officially announce the Nike Air Mag (aka the Back to the Future shoes). It’s Marty McFly himself, ladies and gentlemen!

It’s heartbreaking to see the effect Parkinson’s has on his body—especially since he’s one of my all time boyhood idols—but it’s the truth, Parkinson’s disease is not a walk in the park. If you want to help contribute to the research of curing Parkinson’s Disease, the Nike Air Mags are being auctioned via eBay right now. Some pairs went for as high as $75,000—so it’s obviously not for everyone—but all the proceeds are going to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. If you have the money, it’s a really great cause. You already know it’s a really great shoe. [Nikemag.eBay.com]

What the NYPD’s Impressive Counter Terrorism Unit Actually Does

Reuters just published a photo essay of the NYPD’s Counter Terrorism Unit. The unit is loaded with heavy weapons, Big Brother-esque technology and a determination to prevent something like 9/11 from happening again.

Many New Yorkers have probably noticed the increased cop presence around the city—in subways, on streets, etc.—after 9/11 and complained about them inconveniencing their lives. And sure, some of it is more a show of force than a show of action, but there’s a lot more beyond the dog and pony show.

Most impressive is the Hercules team, which is just as bad ass as it sounds—an intelligence officer, a canine unit, highway patrol unit and squad of heavily armed police officers that are ready for emergencies and tour the city to maintain their presence.

Reuters has so much more about the CTU (including gnarly surveillance tools) but what surprised me most was how the NYPD react to terrorism in other countries and then develop their own preventive measures. Bombs in London subways led to increased patrol in our subways, dirty bombs in Mumbai led to more personnel trained in urban assault tactics. The NYPD also has a presence in 11 different countries, making it the only US police department to have a worldwide reach. As we know, the best intelligence is often better at choking out terrorism than the best technology.

Cuba’s Lung Cancer Vaccine Could Save Your Life

Cuba, famed maker of delicious (and cancery) cigars, may just have an anti-lung cancer vaccine that’s worth getting excited about. CimaVax-EGF isn’t preventative, but it may make this horrible deadly disease just a plain old horrible disease.

The newly available CimaVax-EGF is the product of 25 years of cancer research by Cuban medical authorities. While it cannot prevent cancer or remove cancer, it can do much to limit its effects on your body. In short, it should make cancer a manageable chronic disease. You probably won’t feel great, but it may keep cancer from killing you. It can be used on stage 3 and 4 cancer patients whom have not been responding to other types of treatment.

Specific proteins are generated by the body when lung cancer is present that allow cells to proliferate uncontrollably. The vaccine generates anti-bodies which combat those specific proteins, thus limiting the damage that cancer can do. It has been used in over 1,000 clinical trials in Cuba and is currently available, for free, to all hospitals on the island.

Google acquires ZAGAT

Google announced on Thursday that it acquired the restaurant rating company ZAGAT. “ZAGAT will be a cornerstone of our local offering — delighting people with their impressive array of reviews, ratings and insights, while enabling people everywhere to find extraordinary (and ordinary) experiences around the corner and around the world,” Marissa Mayer, vice president of local, maps and location services at Google said in a blog post. “I’m incredibly excited to collaborate with ZAGAT to bring the power of Google search and Google Maps to their products and users, and to bring their innovation, trust and wealth of experience to our users.” ZAGAT was started more than 32 years ago by a couple, Tim and Nina Zagat, and the company’s ratings are now embedded in pocket guides and plastered on restaurant windows in more than 100 cities around the world and across 13 different categories. Tim Zagat confirmed on ZAGAT’s website that the couple will remain with the business as co-chairs. “Google is the first place everyone goes when looking for information; it’s the perfect home for our content,” Mr. Zagat said. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

iPhone 5 shipments to approach 30 million units this year

Apple manufacturing partner Foxconn has reportedly ramped up iPhone 5 production as the next-generation smartphone finally approaches launch next month. Citing anonymous industry sources, DigiTimes on Thursday reports that production of Apple’s fifth-generation iPhone has reached 150,000 units per day. An earlier report stated that Foxconn will be responsible for approximately 85% of iPhone 5 production while Pegatron will handle the remaining 15% of production, though DigiTimes now reports that Pegatron will not begin building iPhone 5 handsets until next year. According to the site’s sources, Foxconn will ship between 5 million and 6 million iPhone 5 handsets this month, and fourth-quarter shipments are expected to surpass 22 million units. It is estimated that Apple will ship between 86.4 million and 95 million iPhone smartphones this year, making Apple the top global smartphone vendor by shipment volume.

Is Nike Finally Releasing the Shoes Marty McFly Wore in Back to the Future?

OH MY GOD. Ive waited my entire life for this. The guys over at NiceKicks think Nike will announce the Nike Air Mag tomorrow. The Nike Air Mag, as you may know, is the shoe that Marty McFly wore in Back to the Future II. The dots are connecting: weve seen a patent that Nike filed for auto-lacing shoes before, theres a teaser video floating around showing Marty McFlys closet chock full of Air Mags, natch and the invitation NiceKicks received from Nike show the metal glasses Doc Brown famously wore in BTTF II. Weve seen Nike do BTTF-inspired stuff before a DeLorean dunk, for example but this would be the holiest of holy grails.I dont know guys, but I think tomorrow might be the happiest day of my life. This Firefighter Climbs Buildings Faster Than Spider-Man

The World Police and Firefighters Games 2011 happened last week in New York. They came from all over the world to compete but also to celebrate the heroism of these people who save lives risking their own every single day. On the 10th anniversary of 9/11, NYC was the place perfect to do it. And this awesome clip of two firefighters deploying a ladder and one climbing over it seems like the most joyful way to celebrate their abilities. Watching them go makes me giddy—and feel safer.

iPhone 5 pre-orders now available at Deutsche Telekom

Apple has yet to announce it’s fifth-generation smartphone, but that apparently won’t stop German carrier Deutsche Telekom from selling it. Bloomberg reported on Monday morning that it has confirmed with Deutsche Telekom that, beginning today, DT subscribers may begin reserving Apple’s next-generation iPhone 5 smartphone. The carrier will hand out coupons to customers who reserve the device, despite the fact that no confirmed details surrounding the next iPhone are available. Not even the name of the device is confirmed at this point. Apple is expected to launch a fifth-generation iPhone and an updated fourth-generation model some time next month. Invitations to a special media event at which Apple will unveil the new phones are expected as early as this week.

Apple accused of impersonating police during effort to recover lost iPhone 5 prototype

This whole lost iPhone 5 prototype story just got whole lot more interesting. According to SF Weekly, six investigators claiming to be members of the San Francisco police department descended upon one Bernal Heights, San Francisco man’s home in search of a lost iPhone 5 prototype that CNET originally reported had been left in a bar. The scary part? The SFPD confirmed the investigators weren’t police officers at all. Instead, it appears as though they may have actually been members of Apple’s security team allegedly impersonating police officers. Read on for more.

UPDATE: The San Francisco Police Department has now confirmed to SFWeekly that it did in fact assist Apple security with the search. An update can be found here.

The officers in question claimed that they had traced the iPhone 5 to the man’s house using the device’s GPS feature. “They threatened me,” Sergio Calderon, the 22 year old man whose house was searched, said. “We don’t know anything about it, still, to this day,” he told SF Weekly. “They made it seem like they were on the phone with the owner of the phone, and they said ‘The person’s not pressing charges, they just want it back. They’ll give you $300,” he added.
