8 Objects That Signal a New Industrial Revolution

Are we on the verge of a third industrial revolution? The editors at The Economist certainly think so. But while rapid prototyping and the open source movement have been around for decades now, we had yet to see anyone take a truly comprehensive look at the transformation in manufacturing. That is, until the New Museum’s latest show, Adhocracy, came along.

Adhocracy is, in the word of its curator, Domus editor Joseph Grima, “an exhibition about people who make things.” In more specific terms, it’s a collection of 25 machines, printers, apps, and objects that illustrate how rapid prototyping and DIY culture is changing how we make and buy objects.

That can mean anything from a set of standardized joints that let the user build a bike out of nearly any material, to a solar-powered 3D printer that uses sand from the surrounding desert, to an opensource guide to repairing household appliances. The objects vary, but the ethos stays the same: making is no longer the purview of companies which manufacture millions of the same object. It’s the right of individuals, who are manufacturing one or two objects to fit their own unique needs, then passing along their code. Take a look at eight highlights below—or check out the show until July 7.

Oldest Water Cache Ever Discovered May Hold 1.5 Billion-Year-Old Life

After kindly asking a group of Canadian miners for a sample of some water theyd struck, a team of scientists who had been investigating similar finds discovered that the fluid they were looking at may have been sealed up for 1.5 billion years. And thats just the lower limit. The decaying radioactive atoms in the potential primordial soup told them that this cache of water the oldest ever discovered could actually have been waiting patiently in that rock for anywhere up to 2.5 billion years. But this prehistoric time capsule isnt just toting stale water, its also full of hydrogen which, as luck may have it, acts as food for certain microorganisms. Even better—the rock is able to supply a steady flow of hydrogen into its cozy little crevice, which may just have been enough to sustain at least some form of life for all this time.So should it contain the descendants of ancient microbes—which it very well may—not only do we have a perfectly preserved specimen of ancient life, but well also be able to glean a better idea of how we evolved. Because the potential life held within has been so isolated, it would have most likely evolved in distinctly different ways from our own microbial ancient ancestors.

Campaign Mocks A&F CEO by Donating Brands Clothes to Homeless [VIDEO]

An online campaign is attempting to “rebrand” Abercrombie & Fitch by donating its clothes to the homeless, after an author alleged that company CEO Mike Jeffries “doesnt want larger people shopping in his store.”The comments, made by Robin Lewis, were included in a Business Insider article published earlier this month. The piece also referenced, and breathed new life into, a 2006 Salon article in which Jeffries admits that A&F markets to “cool kids,” while excluding those who are unattractive or overweight.“In every school there are the cool and popular kids, and then there are the not-so-cool kids,” he says. “Candidly, we go after the cool kids. We go after the attractive all-American kid with a great attitude and a lot of friends. A lot of people don’t belong [in our clothes], and they can’t belong. Are we exclusionary? Absolutely.”Since the comments went viral, an online campaign to undermine A&Fs “cool kids” image has gained steam. Los Angeles-based writer Greg Karber launched the campaign, which uses the hashtag #FitchTheHomeless, in a video posted to YouTube on Monday.”I was really upset by the Abercrombie & Fitch CEOs comments, and I wanted to do something to turn that negative energy into a positive social good,” Karber told Mashable in an email. In the video, which has since attracted nearly 400,000 hits, Karber encourages viewers to donate their Abercrombie & Fitch clothing to a local homeless shelter, and then share what theyre doing on social media. His goal? To make Abercrombie & Fitch “the worlds number one brand of homeless apparel.”Abercrombie and Fitch did not immediately respond to a request for comment. What do you think of the #FitchTheHomeless campaign? Tell us in the comments, below.

Create the Shutdown Tile That’s Missing From Windows 8

When you’re in Windows 8’s full-screen mode, you have to go through four annoying clicks or taps to shut down your computer. This shortcut fixes that annoyance by placing a one-click (or one-tap) tile in the Start screen.

PCWorld’s Rick Broida to the rescue with these instructions:

  1. Head to the Desktop mode by pressing Windows+D or clicking the Desktop tile.
  2. Right-click on an open space on the desktop and go to New > Shortcut.
  3. In the location field, type shutdown /p and then click Next, then Finish.
  4. Right-click on the new shortcut and choose Pin to Start.

If you like, you can also create a reboot tile using shutdown /r /t 0 (zero, not the letter “o” at the end) in step 3.

Windows 8 comes with a number of annoyances, but many of them, like this, are easy enough to fix. Hopefully with the Windows Blue update, we won’t have to fix all the hassles ourselves.

A Warning to Heart Patients With iPads Bloomberg | Apartment Therapy

Weekend naps are the best…falling asleep in a comfy chair after catching up on your Facebook updates or a session of YouTube cat videos. But there’s always a little bit of “did-I-drop-it?” panic when you wake up with your iPad on your chest. And if you’re one of the 600,000 people in America with a heart defibrilator, rolling over on your screen isn’t the only thing to worry about.

A study by a 14-year-old in California (and daughter of a cardiac electrophysiologist) found the Apple’s iPad 2 can interfere with implanted heart devices because of the powerful magnets embedded inside the tablet. This science fair project gone right was recently presented to thousands of cardiologists at the Heart Rhythm Society meeting, according to this Bloomberg article.

Implanted defibrillators, which deliver an electric shock to the heart when it stops beating or beats irregularly, are susceptible to powerful magnets held against the chest, as they’re intentionally designed to shut them off in case of an emergency at home or anywhere else.

High school freshman Gianna Chien found the 30 magnets inside Apple’s tablet, used to keep a Smart Cover or similar case in place, are more than enough to activate some defibrillators’ emergency power-off (eight of Chien’s 26 volunteers’ defibrillators went into “magnet mode”). Some defibrillators will come back on as soon as the magnet is removed, but many don’t. That means somebody could turn off their heart device and not even know it right away.

Why Your Ears Pop (And What to Do If They Don’t)

Flying sick was a bad choice. Your congested ears refuse to pop and now you’re stuck on a cross-country flight, cruising at 30,000 feet of ear-splitting agony. Here’s how to fix it.

Under Pressure

The surface of the Earth is covered in a thick atmospheric soup. Though only a fraction of the density of our oceans, the atmosphere behaves much the same way. Just as water pressure increases the deeper you go, air pressure increases the closer you get to sea level. In both cases, that’s because as you go deeper, you’ve got more and more air/water above pushing down on you.

We’ve evolved to be able to shrug off the weight of the atmosphere and our ability to hear actually requires it. See, sound waves are transmitted from the outer ear to the inner ear through the eardrum. This thin vibrating membrane acts as a barrier to liquids but allows atmospheric reverberations to pass through, however this requires that the air pressure on both sides of the eardrum be roughly equal.

Microsoft drops the Blue codename, confirms Windows 8.1 will be a free upgrade available later this year

One of the worst kept secrets rattling around Microsofts campus is Windows Blue, the forthcoming update to Windows 8 that addresses users bugbears about the OS. Now, Microsoft is officially rechristening the platform, and with a more staid name: Windows 8.1. Tami Reller, the CMO and CFO of Microsofts Windows Division made the big reveal during JP Morgans Technology, Media & Telecom Conference. The upgrade will be free and available from the home screen when it launches, while a preview version will be opened up to the public on June 26th at the beginning of Build 2013. Unfortunately, Reller wouldnt get any more specific about a formal release date, saying simply that it will be delivered “later in the calendar year.” The only clarification she would offer is, “we know when the holidays are.”As anticipated, the Windows 8.1 update will come to both the full version of the OS as well as the ARM-friendly RT. While we havent officially seen any sub-10-inch slates announced yet, its been rumored that 8.1 would enable smaller devices. Rellers comments only backed up those expectations, when she suggested that Windows 8 is great for everything from “the smallest tablets” to desktops.
