How 3D Printing Gave This Man His Life (and Face) Back

While doctors have experimented with 3D-printed prosthetics in the past, none has been quite as prominent or incredibly detailed as Eric Moger’s newest addition: a prosthetic, 3D-printed face.

Four years ago, Eric underwent surgery to remove a tennis-ball-sized tumor in the left side of his face—along with almost the entire face itself. Left with what was essentially a gaping hole where one should not be, he’s had to eat and drink through tubes directly into his stomach ever since. You’ll see why if you click the picture here, although be forewarned: this is probably not for the faint of heart. click below for more

ATM Skimming Is Now Prolific on Payment Terminals and Ticket Machines

ATM skimming has become an art in recent years, with the devices that crooks use becoming ever more sophisticated. But fraudsters are broadening their reach, with payment terminals and ticket machines now just as much targets as ATMs.Krebs on Security reports findings from the European ATM Security Team EAST which reveals that point-of-sale skimming attacks are becoming the norm. The report points out that at least five countries have reported widespread skimming attacks against transport ticket machines and parking machines.EAST claims that the new skimming devices used in these point-of-sale attacks typically use Bluetooth to transmit the stolen card and PIN details to the crooks, eliminating the need for the devices to be physically revisited. As ever, the advice is obvious: if anything ever looks suspicious at a terminal where you have to use your card, move on.

Dad’s Moving Letter to Gay Son Goes Viral

When a dad overheard his son on the phone with a friend discussing his struggles to confront his parents about his sexuality, the dad left his son this truly touching letter.

The letter reads:

“Nate, I overheard your phone conversation with Mike last night about your plans to come out to me. The only thing I need you to plan is to bring home OJ and bread after class. We are out, like you now. I’ve known you were gay since you were six, I’ve loved you since you were born. Dad. P.S. Your mom and I think you and Mike make a cute couple.”

The message went viral after a FCKH8.com, an activist organization for gay youth, posted it on their Facebook page. The organization raises money for LGBT charities and helps spread the message of love, not hate, through fun t-shirts.

One of the group’s organizers, Luke Montgomery, tells Mashable that his group gets more than a dozen similar messages a day, but only post a few that really speak to them.

“You can imagine how happy we are that this father and son’s story is really touching people so deeply,” Montgomery says. “We hope it sets a good example for fathers to love their kids the way they were born. The fact that it has been shared by so many sadly means this kind of acceptance is both too rare and deeply craved by LGBT people who are so used to being rejected by families.”

Touching Photo of Girl With Autism at Chili’s Goes Viral

A Chili’s restaurant in Midvale, Utah, was the subject of a heartwarming Facebook post over the weekend after “fixing” a customer’s cheeseburger.

The above screenshot, taken from the restaurant’s Facebook page, was shared by a woman named Anna Kaye MacLean, who visited the restaurant with her husband and 7-year-old sister, who has autism. In her comment, MacLean says her sister ordered what she always does: a cheeseburger. When it arrived, though, she didn’t seem interested.

“She calmly said, “No, I don’t want it.” Cheeseburgers, or ‘Krabby Patties’ as we sometimes call them, are her FAVORITE! So this behavior was VERY strange. So I asked her, “Why don’t you want it?” She replied, “It’s broken. I need another one thats fixed.” Then it dawned on me why she wasn’t eating it. It’s because it was cut in half. Being a child with autism, she has to have certain things in a particular order at all times. One slight change in her routine can change the course of the day instantly.”

MacLean asked the server for another cheeseburger, explaining why her sister had perceived her current burger as broken. Soon, a new — and un-cut — sandwich was served.

“[She] said, “OH FANK YOU! You fixded my cheeseburger!” When Lauren walked away, [she] just sat there for a second and looked at her new burger. She looked like so deep in thought … just staring at it … then she let out a big ”OH I missed you!!” and started kissing the burger over and over again.”

Ocean Array Could Clean 7,250,000 Tons of Plastic

Millions of tons of tiny bits of plastic float in giant patches — or gyres — in oceans around the world. There are five large patches of plastic. One of them, the North Pacific Gyre, is roughly twice the size of the United States. All of them are a problem.

These bits of plastic look like food to fish and birds and once consumed, end up killing these animals. But the plastic bits also contain chemicals, such as DDTs and PCBs, that once consumed by small sea creatures then enter the food chain to be consumed eventually by people.

And because plastic doesn’t break down and dissolve, these gyres are going to be around forhundreds, if not thousands of years, even if we stopped polluting tomorrow.

What to do?

Young entrepreneur Boyan Slat wants to develop an array of floating devices designed to clean up the more than 7 million tons of plastic bits suspended in the top layer of the gyres — that’s the weight of 1,000 Eiffel Towers. (click below for more)

HBO CEO mulls teaming with broadband partners for HBO GO | Reuters

(Reuters) – HBO could widen access to its HBO GO online streaming service by teaming up with broadband Internet providers for customers who do not subscribe to a cable TV service, according to HBO’s Chief Executive Richard Plepler.

“Right now we have the right model,” Plepler told Reuters on Wednesday evening at the Season 3 premiere of HBO’s hit TV show “Game of Thrones.” “Maybe HBO GO, with our broadband partners, could evolve.”

HBO launched HBO GO in 2010 to let subscribers view its shows over the Internet on devices such as Apple Inc’s iPads. The service has about 6.5 million registered users, compared with about 29 million for HBO’s main service.

However, HBO GO is only accessible for viewers who pay for cable TV service, plus an extra fee for HBO. This means monthly bills of $100 or more typically. HBO GO is available to subscribers of several pay TV companies that provide Internet service such as Time Warner Cable, Comcast and Verizon FiOS (click below for more)

T-Mobile Unveils Awesome New Contract-Free Data and Voice Plans

T-Mobile Unveils Awesome New Contract-Free Data and Voice Plans

If you’re tired of getting locked into two year contracts with wireless carriers, T-Mobile’s newly-revealed voice and data plans give you a viable alternative.

$50 per month gets you 500 MB of high-speed data with unlimited calling and texting. You won’t be charged for going over the data cap, but you will be throttled. If that won’t cut it, you can bolt on extra data at a rate of $10 for every 2 GB. The plans even include wireless tethering from the same pool of data, which is awesome if you have a tablet but don’t want to pay for a separate data plan (or risk getting caught using an unauthorized tethering app).

The tradeoff here is that T-Mobile is moving away from subsidized handsets, so while you won’t be locked into a contract, you’ll be paying more for your phone upfront. T-Mobile also hasn’t yet begun its LTE rollout (though all indications are that it’s starting soon), so you’ll have to live with 3G HSPA+ speeds for awhile. Still though, if your wireless contract is close to expiring, it may be worth giving T-Mobile a look.

Update: T-Mobile is also offering a $70 plan with unlimited data, calls, and texts. That’s the same price as a 4.5 GB plan, but it only includes 500 MB of hotspot data, rather than all of it.
