Puerto Rico Votes on Status: A Primer on Statehood

With less than 24 hours until election day, our look into the Puerto Rico Status Referendum takes on the seemingly dominant option of the ballot: Statehood. As readers will recall, Puerto Ricans will vote on a two-part question on Election Day concerning their relationship with the United States. On the first part, voters will be asked whether or not they want to continue with the current territorial relationship, currently known as the “commonwealth” option. This question follows the recommendations of the White House in their Task Force Report on Status, since it includes the current status (i.e. the one championed by the Popular Democratic Party) as a stand-alone option for voters. The second question on the ballot asks voters which non-territorial option they prefer: Independence, Sovereign Commonwealth or Statehood.

Statehood: What is it

Under statehood, Puerto Rico would petition Congress for admission as the 51st state. If admitted, it would have approximately 7 representatives and 2 senators, giving it an approximate total of 9 electoral votes (equal to or more than the electoral votes 31 states have as of 2012). As a state, Puerto Rico would finally be subject to federal income taxes (we only pay Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security taxes), but it would benefit from the Earned Income Tax Credit (which Fox News’ Stuart Varney places at twenty billion dollars), full parity with Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, as well as an increase in federal funds. Puerto Rico would, besides having full representation in Congress, finally end its century-long colonial relationship with the United States.

Uninstall Your Windows Product Key So You Can Use The License on Another PC

Uninstall Your Windows Product Key So You Can Use The License on Another PCBefore you sell or recycle an old computer, you might want to take your Windows license and use it on a different PC. The How-To Geek offers instructions for uninstalling your product key and installing it on a new PC.

You just need to open the Command Prompt in administrative mode and run two commands to uninstall the product key. Installing it is just as easy using the same “slmrg” command.

You should note this fine print from the article before proceeding:

Note: Between Microsoft and your OEM there are a number of different laws that determine whether you are allowed to use your license on another PC, so follow this tutorial at your own risk. Additionally before you go through the tutorial you will want to check that your product key is still attached to your PC/Installation CD, if it is not , do a quick Google search on how to recover it.

(You can recover the product key using previously mentioned ProduKeyeven if your computer is broken.)

For the full instructions, see the tutorial below.

Is It Illegal To Instagram Your Vote?

Is It Illegal To Instagram Your Vote? This may sound familiar: a friend of yours posts a picture of her completed ballot, shot moments ago, inside a New York City voting booth. Was it legal to take that photo to begin with? In a surprising number of states, this simple act—one you’ve no doubt seen repeated on Instagram and Facebook dozens of times today—would’ve constituted a misdemeanor.

Seem ridiculous? Of course it is. But for many, many people, it’s the law. Here’s a guide to how legal it is to Instagram your vote no matter where you live.

According to the Citizen Media Law Project’sDocumenting the Vote 2012, the laws vary wildly from state to state. In New York—from which most of my friends’ photos have been posted—the § 17-130 law is unequivocal. “Any person who…makes or keeps any memorandum of anything occurring within the booth, or directly or indirectly, reveals to another the name of any candidate voted for by such voter; or shows his ballot after it is prepared for voting, to any person so as to reveal the contents…is guilty of a misdemeanor.” Ditto Florida, and the overwhelming majority of municipalities.

Delaware, though? You’re all good. Knock yourself out.

Here’s a complete list of what your state laws have to say about photos in the voting booth. See the thorough resource assembled by Citizen Media Law Project for much of the same info in handy chart form.

students teach themselves

Mobile technology and social networks aren’t just disruptive to existing industries like communications and media, they are also helping the change the way that students learn and how education is delivered both in North America and around the world. And the disruption is just beginning.

By now, most of us have become pretty used to the ways that technology — both devices and social web services — have changed things we have always taken for granted, whether it’s communication or photography, or something as obvious as renting an apartment or hailing a cab.

But those same kinds of disruptions are moving into new areas, and education is one of them. From university classes via YouTube and startups like Udacity to the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project, there are more ways than ever for children to educate themselves, even in remote villages in Ethiopia. Despite the inevitable criticisms such efforts get both from within the education system and outside it, it’s part of a powerful and growing phenomenon.

One example: At a recent conference on emerging technology at MIT, Nicholas Negroponte — the former head of the MIT Media Lab and founder of the OLPC project — talked about what his group noticed about the villages in Ethiopia, where some devices were dropped off. The Motorola Xoom tablets, which were distributed along with a solar-charging system, were delivered in boxes to two isolated rural villages about 50 miles from the capital of Addis Ababa, where Negroponte said the children had never before seen printed English words — not even packaging or road signs with printed letters.

write elegantly on the iPad

It’s hard to write elegantly on the iPad, to hone your word choice with an edge of only the strongest, most specific verbs. Heck, it’s hard just to type a proper curse word without autocorrect getting in the way. But what if it could be different? What if iPad typing were as easy as real typing?

Hooper Selection is an iPad interface concept by Georgia Tech student Daniel Hooper. He’s so excited about the project that he not only coded and filmed the demo software; he built a Wikipedia page on the technique (the poor man’s copyright for the digital age).

You can’t really blame Hooper’s gusto, because just like Apple’s own pinch-to-zoom, once you see the idea, it’s hard to get it out of your mind.

It’s a simple as this: You type normally at all times. But if you want to move the cursor, just drag your finger around the keyboard, and the cursor moves with it. If you want to drag faster, you use two fingers to move the cursor. And, most usefully, if you want to highlight a word to edit it, just hold shift while cursoring and you’ll highlight it..

Wendy Callis’s “mesmerizing” work

Wendy Callis’s “mesmerizing” work during Hurricane Sandy called attention to how facial and body movements are parts of grammar in the visual language.

As New York City Mayor Bloomberg gave numerous televised addresses about the preparations the city was making for Hurricane” Sandy, and then the storm’s aftermath, he was joined at the podiumby a sign language interpreter, who immediately became a twitter darling. People watching the addresses tweeted that she was “amazing,” “mesmerizing,” “hypnotizing,” and “AWESOME.” Soon, her name was uncovered — Lydia Callis — and animated GIFs of her signing were posted. A couple of hours later, a tumblr was born. New York magazine called her “Hurricane Sandy’s breakout star.”

Callis was great, but not because she was so lively and animated. She was great because she was performing a seriously difficult mental task — simultaneously listening and translating on the spot — in a high-pressure, high-stakes situation. Sure, she was expressive, but that’s because she was speaking a visual language. Signers are animated not because they are bubbly and energetic, but because sign language uses face and body movements as part of its grammar.

In American Sign Language, certain mouth and eye movements serve as adjectival or adverbial modifiers.

In this example, Bloomberg is explaining that things will get back to normal little by little. Callis is making the sign INCREASE, but her tight mouth and squinting eyes modify the verb to mean “increase in tiny increments.” This facial expression can attach to various verbs to change their meaning to “a little bit.”

Change

Change is hard and sometimes scary, however change is inevitable but in order for change to be effective and have any value we must be open to it. The willingness to be open to change causes change to occur. STR

A $3,000 iPhone 5 Case for Those With Money to Burn

A $3,000 iPhone 5 case is apparently one way to protect a $199 phone. This titanium Gresso Revolution bumper case may just be the perfect iPhone 5 case for the kind of guys that outfit high-mileage clunkers with $5,000 rims and $10,000 stereo systems.Gresso is positioning the Revolution case as some sort of luxury, but there’s nothing about this case to justify its sky-high price.  Sure, you could brag to your friends about the $3,000 case, but you’ll probably lose a lot of respect in the process. The Gresso Revolution bumper case is limited to a production run of 999. Each is serialized, which Gresso employees seem to think is an incredible feat. It’d make more financial sense to buy four extra iPhone 5s at the full $649 unsubsidized price than to buy the Gresso.
