This Is the iPad Mini You Should Get

The iPad Mini is just a shrunken down iPad 2in a lot of ways, but it is a different device with uses that will be somewhat different. So what do you need in an iPad mini? We think we have it figured out.

For Almost Everybody

It’s the 16 GB Wi-Fi iPad Mini, in black.

  • Why 16 gigs? The iPad mini is primarily for reading and browsing the web. Those activities don’t take up much space on an iPad. It’s perfect for storing books and magazines, a handful of favorite games, some essential apps, and a fair amount of music. Any gamer who is buying an iPad to play a resource-gobbler like Infinity Blade II probably doesn’t want to drop money on a device whose guts are two years old. Anyone who really likes watching locally stored video probably wants a bigger display.
  • Why Wi-Fi? How often do you really see yourself somewhere for an extended period of time without a wi-fi connection? What connected activity would you need to do on an miniature iPad that you couldn’t do on a smartphone in a pinch? Why not just tether your iPad to your phone?
  • And why black? For the same reason as the iPhone 5. That murdered out, black on black—or slate, to be exact—color scheme is too damn sleek to refuse.

But there are exceptions.

Some of you won’t blend into the homogenous horde. So there might be a few good reasons why you’d want a different iPad Mini.

  • Why a 32/64 GB iPad Mini? You have a long commute on public transportation and you can watch entire movies or episodes during that time. You have no internet connection. Alternatively, you have kids, and want to toss them a device chock full o’ entertainment they can actually hold while they’re in the backseat.
  • Why a 4G iPad Mini? You travel a lot and find yourself needing to do internet-dependent things where stable wi-fi connections don’t exist. You have a 3G phone which isn’t optimal for heavy use. And you need more screen real estate than your connected smartphone can offer, but don’t want the bulk of a full-sized tablet next to your laptop. Chances are, the company you work for is probably willing to foot all (or part) of that data bill as well. In that case, go with a Verizon data plan.
  • Why a white iPad Mini? Because it looks pretty damn nice too. And like a black bezel lends itself to a more immersive video experience, a white bezel could do the same when you’re reading a book.

Apple vs. Google vs. Microsoft: The Next Round in the Battle of the Ecosystems

Mark your calendars.  Today is a day where we have been treated to the revelation of what is really going on in the battle between the tech giants for market supremacy. To say the least, there is what those in the military call “a target rich environment.” The Internet is abuzz.

Google vs. Apple sounds familiar

Let’s start with the statement by Google CEO Eric Schmidt. Speaking to the tech blog AllThingsDigital at the Nwork 92nd Street Y, Schmidt heated up the blogosphere by saying not only does he expect more than a billion devices around the world to be running his Android software within a year, but he called Google’s battle with Apple a “defining fight.” He went on to add that “We’ve not seen…competitive fights of this scale.” This was short and sweet, but actually a mouthful.

I seem to remember over the years numerous tech industry headlines about battles of titans for world domination. A few that come to mind are:

IBM vs. everyone else in the computer industry which led to antitrust action

Ditto on AT&T vs. everyone in the communications world which led to the breakup of Ma Bell

Microsoft vs. IBM

Microsoft vs. Netscape

HP vs. all other printer makers

You get the picture, as every few years in some market we see these struggles but we have never seen a battle of this scale. That is until we see another one.  And, many of these have been about either some company getting control of the device market, the Internet or both.

Microsoft’s Ballmer chimes in

With a much deserved tip of the hat to TMC CEO Rich Tehrani, if not for his blog I would have missed Microsoft CEO’s recent shareholder letter which seems to have Apple on its mind and Google too. As Tehrani explains, Ballmer attempts to make a case as to why Microsoft is developing certain devices by basically sticking his thumb in the eye of other members of the ecosystem for not producing better products than Microsoft seems to want to run its software on.

My goodness! The arrogance given the Microsoft track record of developing devices from business telephones to set-tops for cable TV to mobile phones and “E”verything in between is (and I will be polite) problematic. Other than the successful Xbox, it is hard to point to a Microsoft hardware success. Indeed, they seem to be much better at extracting fees from Android manufactures like HTC then when literally left to their own devices.

Your Spit Might Tell Dentists If You Have Cancer

Dentists (a.k.a. we’re real doctors, I promise!) might soon be your first line of defense against cancer through something called salivanomics—meaning analyzing your spit to see if you have diseases.

UCLA researcher Dr. David Wong argues in a new paper published in the Journal of the American Dental Association that in saliva lie a number of health indicators. PopSciexplains salivary diagnostics:

Human saliva is made up of molecules, after all, and in those complex molecules doctors or dentists looking for the right things can find everything from proteins to DNA to RNA—or basically the entire genome and a slew of other supporting characters. With these molecules identified and isolated researchers can then apply any number of scientific tools to them—things like gemomics, proteomics, and transcriptomics.

Most of us see our dentists more often than we see our regular doctors, and running tests on a simple mouth swag to check for diseases is not at all invasive, and in some cases, just as effective testing blood or other bodily fluids in the diagnosis process. This isn’t something that’s being implemented quite yet, but it should be; the next time you have a dental exam, you could be caring for your overall health as well. And it might make you schedule that teeth cleaning on time for the first time in your life. [UCLA via PopSci]

First Iron Man 3 Trailer Is Ridiculously Amazing

The first Iron Man 3 trailer is here! And if the movie is half as good as this, you will be cheering in the movie theater with Avengers-level joy. Just look at Ben Kingsley playing The Mandarin, Tony Stark’s next nemesis and a classic supervillain in the Marvel universe. It’s a sight to behold.

“Nothing’s been the same since New York [talking about the events in Avengers]”, Stark says.

“Heroes. There’s no such thing,” says the Mandarin.

And then exquisite mayhem everywhere.

Here’s the official plot, from Marvel:

In Marvel’s “Iron Man 3”, brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man played by Robert Downey Jr., is pitted against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

[Sounds like a Batman situation.]

Is This the Spaceship That Will Take Us to Mars?

Somewhere deep in the Marshall Space Center, in an unmarked beige hangar, NASA is building a spaceship. A spaceship built with spare parts, scrap hardware from the International Space Stations, a left-over aluminum-lithium cylinder and even museum mockups. One day, it may become the vessel that takes humans to Mars.NASA engineers lead by Paul Bookout are talking about it at the the Fifth Wernher von Braun Memorial Symposium, happening now in Huntsville, Alabama. Bookouts team is working with a team from the Johnson Space Center in Houston led by astronaut Benjamin Alvin Drew, a USAF Colonel whos been to space twice, including on the last mission of the Space Shuttle Discovery.According to Bookout, the team is using its spaceship habitat to look at volume studies: “Are the crew quarters going to be the right size, the waste and hygiene compartment, the wardroom, the exercise area—were looking at all those for this extended stay.”The spaceship model that Bookout and his colleagues are building is a medium-fidelity version of the habitat that may shelter the astronauts that go to Mars for the first time. It includes crew quarters that are two times as big as the crew space in the ISS, with everything they need to survive, including food storage.Theres also a science bay that also serves as a greenhouse in which they will be able to grow plants during their trip. You know, just like in the movies.

Puerto Rico enthralled by cheeky newscaster puppet – Yahoo! News

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — No one is safe from the crosshairs of La Comay.

This five-foot-tall character with a foam head painted with outrageous red lips, a shrill voice and a penchant for salacious details rules Puerto Rico’s gossip circuit, with legions tuning into her show every afternoon ready for the latest bombshell. La Comay dishes it out with ominous music playing in the background, talking about everyone from Mexican crooner Luis Miguel to Puerto Rico’s own Miss Universe beauty queen Zuleyka Rivera.

With her trademark “Ayayayayayay!” shriek punctuated by the kind of wailing sirens reserved for nuclear meltdowns, La Comay delivers what has consistently been one the most popular shows in Puerto Rico for a decade.

“Ladies and gentlemen, listen to this,” La Comay says in one show while going after a well-known local journalist. “Apparently and allegedly, the reporter and crew member apparently and allegedly were drunk.”

With a wicked drawl, she asks, “Have I mentioned the name?” A drag queen then appears in a clip repeating one of La Comay’s catchphrases, which translates roughly as: “Throw it out there, Comay! Throw it out there!”

The program has been derided for being over-the-top sensationalist and for broadcasting derogatory comments against women and gays, but “Super Xclusivo” remains the main news source for thousands in the U.S. territory and hundreds of Puerto Ricans in Florida and New York. The island comes to a stop every afternoon to watch La Comay not only talk small-town gossip but also expose government and business corruption scandals.

“It’s an addiction,” said Iris Laboy, a longtime follower in San Juan. “It is the TV show with the most impact in Puerto Rico.”

That isn’t lost on government officials including the island’s governor, its justice secretary and the Senate president, all of whom have granted La Comay live interviews while sometimes shunning other media. Gubernatorial candidate Rafael Bernabe raised eyebrows when he recently rejected an invitation to appear on the program, becoming one of the first campaigning politicians to skip the La Comay’s hot seat in recent history.

Alvin Cuoto, spokesman for Bernabe’s People’s Working Party, said not appearing on the gossip show was a question of principles.

Horrid Airport X-Ray Body Scanners Are Finally Being Replaced

Horrid Airport X-Ray Body Scanners Are Finally Being Replaced

The maybe useless and definitely invasive X-ray body scanners at major airports across the country are being replaced with new models that don’t blast you with a bomb of radiation. Coincidentally, the new scanners won’t allow the TSA to see your junk anymore, too.

Pro Publica reports that backscatter machines have already been replaced at Boston Logan International Airport, Los Angeles International Airport, Chicago O’Hare, Orlando and JFK in New York, The new millimeter-wave scanners just give you a once over with low-energy radiation. The resulting image inspected by TSA looks like a cartoon rather than a humiliating silhouette of shower-you.

Before your get all excited that health, safety, and privacy concerns have prevailed, let us clarify: The old backscatter machines aren’t being landfilled. Instead, they’re being moved to smaller airports where they’ll see less traffic. Good news for many, bad news for the unfortunate few. [Pro Publica]
