Why Are Blueprints Blue?

If you ever wondered why blueprints were blue and not black or red or white or brown or any other color than blue, well, it’s not because architects really like the color but because the technique in making blueprints caused the paper to turn blue.

Mental Floss delved into the history of blueprints and discovered that the blueprint process was developed in the 1800’s when scientists found an easy way to reproduce documents by using ammonium iron citrate and potassium ferrocyanide as some sort of old school photocopy. How does that really work? Well, as Mental Floss explains it:

Someone creates a drawing on translucent tracing paper or cloth. The drawing is placed over a piece of blueprinting paper, which has been coated with a mix of ammonium iron citrate and potassium ferrocyanide from an aqueous solution and dried. When the two papers are exposed to a bright light, the two chemicals react to form an insoluble blue compound called blue ferric ferrocyanide (also known as Prussian Blue), except where the blueprinting paper was covered, and the light blocked, by the lines of the original drawing. After the paper is washed and dried to keep those lines from exposing, you’re left with a negative image of white (or whatever color the blueprint paper originally was) against a dark blue background.

You see, the chemicals react and makes the paper blue. And back in the day, using this blueprinting technique was obviously faster and more effective than tracing the documents. The blueprint name has stuck ever since. The more you know, right. [Mental Floss, Image Credit:nahariyani/Shutterstock]

Engineers Claim To Be Able To Make Gas From Air

Hidden away in sleepy northern England is an engineering company with a radical idea: it claims to be able to make gas, to run your car, out of air. Is this the solution to the global fuel crisis, or wild hyperbole? The company, called Air Fuel Synthesis, revealed its research at a London-based engineering conference this week, claiming that not only can it make gas from air, but that it actually removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, too. It sounds miraculous. So, how do they claim to be able to do it? First, apparently, they take sodium hydroxide and mix it with carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. That produces sodium carbonate, which can then be electrolyzed to form purer carbon dioxide. The CO2 is then combined with hydrogen—produced by electrolyzing water vapor captured with a dehumidifier—to produce methanol. Finally, that methanol is passed through a gasoline fuel reactor—which uses some nifty organic chemistry once developed by Mobil—to create… gas!

The Man Who Went Under the Most Extensive Face Transplant Ever Has an Amazing New Face

Do you remember Richard Lee Norris? He was the guy who suffered a horrific gun accident in 1997 that ripped off his nose, chin, lips and teeth and turned him into a recluse. This past year he went under the most extensive face transplant ever and now after much recovery, his face is brand new.Remember, this was the face transplant that would make even sci-fi movies shudder—Norris received donor skin from his scalp to his neck, along with new teeth, tongue, muscle, tissue and a jaw. It was intense. After the surgery in March, we saw a picture of the results side-by-side with his previous face. It still looked swollen. Today? He looks totally normal. Norris says:”For the past 15 years I lived as a recluse hiding behind a surgical mask and doing most of my shopping at night when less people were around. I am now able to walk past people and no one even gives me a second look. My friends have moved on with their lives, starting families and careers. I can now start working on the new life given back to me.Norris has spent a lot of his time since the surgery fishing and golfing and has regained his speech and can even smile and show expressions. It is truly amazing how far he has come.

Microsoft Made Its First Non-Terrible Ad Just in Time for Windows 8

You may well know Windows 8 backwards and forwards (swipes) by now, may even be tinkering with the Developer Preview as we speak. But for the normals out there in the world? Their first introduction to Microsoft’s desktop upheaval will be through this ad. And—shockingly enough—it’s pretty good!

Whatever your take on Microsoft’s actual products, there’s little argument over the quality of its ads over the years. In a word, they’ve been awful. Good lord, it even rapped about cloud storage as recently as this month. So while the first real Windows 8 ad won’t blow down any doors, the fact that it seems competent, watchable, even, is no small miracle.

Between this and the leaked Windows 8 ads (since pulled) from a few weeks ago, it looks as though Microsoft hasn’t just found out how to completely reinvent the desktop; it’s found out how to sell it. And which is more important might just be a tossup.

Go Download iOS 6 RIGHT NOW

iOS 6 is finally available for public consumption and you can get it one of two ways: You can plug your iOS device in to your computer and check iTunes for an update, or you can go into the settings menu on your iPhone 3GS, 4 or 4S, iPod touch 4G, 5G or iPad iPad 2 or New iPad and navigate to General > Software Update. And while updating shouldnt wipe out your previously stored data, you should back your device up just to be safe. And if you dont see the update popping up right away, just give it a minute. These things can sometimes take a while when first rolling out.

Sprint: iPhone 4 discontinued on September 21st, says leaked document

Following its announcement of the iPhone 5, Apple (AAPL) revealed that the iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 will continue to be available at discounted prices. The iPhone 4S will be available for $99 with a new two-year agreement and the iPhone 4 will be offered for free on-contract, replacing the iPhone 3GS. 9To5Mac on Monday published a leaked Sprint (S) document suggesting that the carrier might discontinue the iPhone 4 following the launch of Apple’s new iPhone 5, but BGR has learned that this is not the case. A Sprint spokesperson confirmed via email that while Sprint will stop selling the iPhone 4 in its retail stores beginning this Friday, the carrier will continue to offer the iPhone 4 online through its website.

Fox News (Falsely) Reports iPhone 5 Will Have Laser Keyboard and Holographic Images

Loyal viewers of Fox 5 news will be pretty disappointed come September 21, when they discover their shiny new iPhone 5s have exactly none of the sweet features the NYC Fox affiliate has reported the phone to have.

The news channel, rather embarrassingly, played a year-old iPhone 5 concept video during a package about the new device and the eager consumers camping outside the store to get theirs first.

“Starting at two-hundred bucks, the iPhone 5 is sleeker, has a laser keyboard, holographic images, and other cool new features,” says a voice over a clip from Aatma Studio’s August 2011 video titled—rather explicitly— “iPhone 5 Concept Features.” On screen, a hand pivots to showcase what is clearly a wafer-thin fake. The year-old Youtube video has over 62-million views to date. [TUAW]
