The Higgs Boson Discovery Is Now Real Science

In July, scientists announced that they’d discovered what they strongly suspected to be the Higgs Boson, a particle that’s believed to be the key to unifying the standard and quantum models of physics. In August more experiments made the finding more certain—and now, the results have been peer-reviewed and published, making them, for want of a better term, real science.

iPad mini photos leak, may reveal working tablet for first time

Purported images of a model based on Apple’s AAPL upcoming iPad mini tablet were published by a Chinese blog on Tuesday, possibly revealing the finished design of Apple’s upcoming tablet for the first time. French Apple blog Nowhereelse.fr picked up the images on Tuesday morning, which were originally published by DGtle. The photos reportedly depict a model of the iPad mini that was likely made from leaked specifications and intended to help a third-party case manufacturer build and test protective cases for the upcoming smaller iPad. Apple is expected to unveil the iPad mini at a press conference in October.

New HTC One X+ details trickle out | Android Atlas – CNET Reviews

A smattering of hardware specs for the rumored HTC One X+ arrived online courtesy of an anonymous XDA developer known as Football4PDA.

According to his unconfirmed tweet, the faster and more powerful One X will run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with HTC Sense 4.5 and offer a 1.6GHz quad-core Tegra 3 processor. Like the original model, the One X+ should also boast 1GB RAM, 32GB of internal storage, and a 1,800mAh battery.

HTC, as many of you know, has an event slated for September 19 where they could unveil a host of new products, including a pair tablets. It’s entirely possible that the show will focus more on Windows Phone announcements, however I’m holding out for at least one or two Android phones.

Given the rumors of the One X+ have been circulating for a while now, it’s perhaps time to put this one to bed.

As far as pricing is concerned, I would imagine HTC might keep the same $199 sticker that came with the first model. The specs are a decent boost over the original One X, but not quite enough to merit a higher price.

A Side-by-Side Comparison of Apple and Braun Designs | Apartment Therapy

With Apple being so litigous about their design patents lately, youd expect their designs to be completely unique and innovative. But Apple and its Senior Vice President of Industrial Design, Jonathan Ive, have been known to take cues from another bastion of industrial design, Dieter Rams and Braun.Design junkies will have you know: Braun is not just an electric shaver company. In the 1960s, with young German industrial designer Dieter Rams at the helm, Braun became known for its iconic designs for a wide range of devices. Rams later used his heralded experience to coin the ten principles of good design:

E-Book Prices Should Start Dropping Soon

E-Book Prices Should Start Dropping Soon

Book publishers have reached a settlement with the Department of Justice over the e-book price fixing ring of which Apple was allegedly kingpin. That settlement is great news, because it means we’ll be able to buy cheaper e-books really soon.

Apple was accused of teaming up with HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, and Hachette Book Group to bar Amazon from selling e-books at a discount by keeping their prices artificially high. But because of today’s settlement, the shady partnership is over, and Amazon can go back to peddling e-books at $9.99 or lower.

Apple will still have to go to court next spring to answer to anti-trust allegations, as will two other publishers that didn’t settle—Penguin and Macmillan. A couple of camps might not be so thrilled about the settlement, however. It could cause a bit of a pricing debacle for traditional book stores, because book books will never be as cheap as e-books. The other is Amazon competitors. In 2010, the last time Amazon was able to sell e-books for $9.99, it had a stranglehold on 90 percent of the market, and other retailers struggled to make inroads. Now they fear they’re going to be in the same boat all over again.

iPhone 5 Will Reportedly Cost the Same as the iPhone 4S Does Now

9To5Mac claims to have the scuttlebutt on pricing for the iPhone that Apple is going to announce next week. Unsurprisingly, the report says that the phones will cost—gasp!—the same amount as the iPhone 4S does now. The basic model (16GB) will cost $200 with a contract. From there, you’ll be able to step up to $300 (32GB) and $400 (64GB) versions of the phone. [9To5Mac]

Ice Jacket | Uncrate

Don’t water your drink down with ice or keep your party focused around a ridiculous ice luge — if you want to serve you and your guests the coldest booze imaginable, grab yourself an Ice Jacket ($35). Made from polypropylene, the Jacket consists of a base/grip that fits on the end of most standard liquor bottles and a sleeve that wraps around the upper portion. Lock the sleeve into place, fill it with water, and stick it in the freezer for 7-8 hours, and you’re bottle will be coated in a thick coating of ice that will keep it cold for hours.

How Does the iPads Touchscreen Recognize These Trading Cards?

Not since the inclusion of stale bubble gum has there been an innovation in trading cards as awesome as what these Nuko cards are capable of. They look, feel, and flex just like regular cards, but they can be recognized by touchscreens when simply pressed against the display. The secret is a printing technique called Touchcode that uses special capacitive inks which are apparently still compatible with existing printer hardware. The ink is printed in a specific pattern on one end of the card thats detected by the touchscreen as multiple simultaneous finger presses. And the arrangement of this pattern can be used to transmit data like a website URL. The capacitive ink is also printed on the other end of the card where its held, connecting it to the unique pattern so the whole thing basically serves as an extension of your fingers.
