Facebook’s New Photo UI Creates Gorgeous Mosaics

Facebook’s photo interface is getting a lovely, much-needed makeover. Starting today, it’s rolling out a much cleaner layout, with a mosaic view off all your images as well as three simple tabs at the top of the page—one for photos of you, another for all the pics you’ve posted, and another for your albums.

This is the first significant change to photos in quite a while, and we think it’s a pretty good one. [The Verge]

Is This the Best or the Most Evil Parenting Trick Ever?

I don’t know who had the genius idea—and courage—to stick this post-it on their fridge door but, as evil as it may seem for kids all around the world, it’s the best parenting tip I’ve ever seen on this age of underage internet junkies.

Apple will announce the new iPhone and an iPad Mini on September 12

iMore is reporting that Apple will announce the new iPhone and an iPad Mini on September 12, for release on the 21st.

The relatively earlier-than-expected announcement would make some sense; Apple repeatedly cited next-generation iPhone rumors as being the reason iPhone 4S sales fell short last quarter, so the sooner a new product hits shelves the better. The basics are a stretched-out 4-inch screen anda smaller dock connector. But details about leaked components have ranged fromsmuggled phones to leaked parts to fully assembled units made from those parts. If those hold up, the next iPhone has been making the rounds for a while now.

It should also be noted that iMore nailed the date on this year’s iPad announcementalmost a month ahead of time.

The full announcement list will reportedly include the new iPhone, the iPad Mini, a new iPod Nano, and most likely the final version of iOS 6. iMore is also hearing that the iPad Mini is essentially a 7-point-something-inch version of the current iPad, and the new iPhone will have a 4-inch, 16:9 ratio screen.

All the American Flags On the Moon Are Now White

NASA has finally answered a long-standing question: all but one of the six American flags on the Moon are still standing up. Everyone is now proudly talking about it. The only problem is that they aren’t American flags anymore.

They are all white.

The debate on the Moon flags has been going on for decades. Engineers and historians have been discussing it without ever coming to a definitive answer as to their status. Even Dennis Lacarruba—the manufacturer of the flags—didn’t think they would still be standing erect. Lacarruba’s New Jersey company, Annin, made the nylon flags for $5.50 ($33 in 2012 dollars) a piece in 1969:

Microsoft Did the Impossible: The New Hotmail Is Fantastic

No need to be kind here: telling people you use Hotmail has been the Internet equivalent of admitting to necrophilia. But after a decade as a punchline, Hotmail just pulled off the biggest victory in the inbox game since Gmail. And it might just get you to switch.

This is starting to look familiar to the point of predictability. Microsoft takes something boring, partially broken, and thoroughly entrenched: Windows, Office, Mobile. Toss nearly everything ugly and uninspired into the ash heap, put smart people to work on it, and pack it full of Metro. Windows 8, Office 15, and Windows Phone have all turned stale things into vibrant, modern successes. And Hotmail—now Outlook—can boast the same.

The Largest Mirror In the World Is Also One of the Most Beautiful Places on Earth

This is the Salar de Uyuni, the largest salt flatland in the world at 4,086 square miles 10,582 kilometers. Every year, this amazing wonderland in southwest Bolivia covers with a thin layer of water. When that happens, it turns into the largest mirror on the planet, as these photos recently taken by Takaki Watanabe show. The resulting landscape is absolutely surreal, out of a Salvador Dalí painting. I want to go there—¡pronto! The salar is formed by several preshistoric lakes, which started to transform 30,000 to 42,000 years ago. Covered by several feet of salt, the Salar de Uyuni stays dry most of the year except a few days, when it rains and turns into this wonder. And while it looks like it must be hell on Earth, its not hot at all: its temperatures range from a low 55 degrees Fahrenheit 13º C to 70º F 21º F.But the most surreal part is the fact that is a major breeding ground for pink flamingos. Can you imagine a flock of thousands of flamingos flying over this perfect mirror? I want to see that one day.

Kid Opens a Gun Safe Just by Jostling It Around

A gun safes purpose is obvious in its name, but many readily available models fail to deliver, as this 3-year-old safe-cracker is quick to demonstrate.A number of consumer-grade safes already proven to be dangerously insecure are now due to be hacked apart at DefCon. One of the worst offenders includes the Amsec EST916 which has been shown to open with just a jostle or two. Its not exactly clear from the video below whether the safe is re-locked after being closed, but even so, its inability to stay shut after just a drop or two makes it bad even for a cabinet.

What Nuclear Radiation Does To Your Body

Say some maniacal world leader finally hits the big red button. Or maybe a terrorist takes out the local nuclear reactor. You survive the initial attack, and you’re left to endure a world poisoned by nuclear radiation. How’s that gonna feel?

Measure the dosage

When nuclear reactions get going, they spit out particles with enough energy to rip electrons off of atoms or molecules. The altered bonds produce ion pairs that are extremely chemically reactive. This is known as ionizing radiation, and it’s where the problems start.

There are many types of ionizing radiation. Take your pick from cosmic, alpha, beta, gamma or X- rays, neutrons, or from a handful more. What really matters is how much an organism is exposed to—a concept called absorbed dose.

One way to measure absorbed dose is in units of Grays (Gy). Another common unit is the sievert (Sv), which takes the Gy measure and multiples it by the type of radiation to calculate the effective dose in living tissue. The average radiation exposure during a couple of seconds of an abdominal X-ray is 0.0014 Gy—it’s a light dose, and it’s locally administered, so it’s not that bad. When you really get into trouble is with whole-body exposure, like, say, in the Chernobyl control room immediately after the explosion. There, you would soaked up 300 Sv per hour. But you wouldn’t last an hour. The dose would be lethal in just 1-2 minutes.
