Chinese Kid Sells His Kidney for an iPad and iPhone, Suffers Renal Failure

Though you might say youd give your left arm for an iPad, you only mean it figuratively. But one Chinese teen actually sold his kidney to make enough money to buy the Apple tablet and an iPhone, and now five people have been charged with intentional injury in the case. The bottom line? A kidney for an iPad is not a good trade. The 17-year-old, known only by his family name of Wang, received $3,500 when he put his kidney on the black market last April. Which is chump change compared to the organs $35,000 asking price, which was shared among the surgeon, the medical staff, the fixer, and the three other people charged in the case.

Scientists have uncovered several gene mutations that sharply increase the chances of developing autism. The findings are published in three papers in the journal Nature.A Genetic Autism RoadmapThe mutations are rare and account for a small number of actual cases, which have reached the alarming rate of one in every 88 children, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report released last week. Remove Paint with a Slow Cooker and Water

Paint removal usually requires a highly toxic chemical to get the job done, but for small metal objects, DIY site The Family Handyman recommends dropping your paint-coated hardware into a slow cooker with some water.

Obviously you don’t want to go grabbing your favorite slow cooker off the shelf for this, but if you have an old one collecting dust or you score one cheap at a thrift store, the paint removal process is incredibly simple. Fill the slow cooker with water, set the dial to high, drop whatever hardware you want to strip paint from inside, and leave it overnight. You do need to be careful what type of material and paint you’re working with though. The Family Handyman explains:

Build Your Credit Score Without Credit Cards

We’ve discussed some ways to build credit without a credit card in the past, but the folks at Get Rich Slowly have a few additional suggestions, including taking out a small personal loan with a trusted bank or credit union and paying it down on time, and trying out a secured credit card that you load up with money and use like cash. Both options will build up your FICO score over time, and are great alternatives for people who don’t like or don’t trust credit cards.

If you’re looking for an inexpensive way to store your shoes that has a unique look consider making this PVC shoe rack. All you need to do is buy 4-in or 6-in diameter PVC pipe and cut it into lengths of 1.5 feet.

Tumblr user Why Not Do It Yourself advises that once you’ve decided how many PVC “cells” to have in your rack you can start gluing the first and second rows together with Gorilla Glue or any other glue that works with PVC. When you’re finished you can paint the rack to match your wall or go crazy and make it neon green.
