Should I Keep My Personal and Professional Identities Completely Separate Online?

Dear Lifehacker,

I’m a pretty savvy person when it comes to getting my work on the web where people can see, but all this talk about Facebook passwords and things has me re-thinking my personal/professional boundaries. Should I set up completely separate accounts for my personal life and my professional life, or is that kind of misleading? How can I juggle privacy and openness, especially if I want to make a name for myself and get hired?

Sincerely,

Camera Shy

Dear Camera Shy,

Well, there’s no clear yes or no answer here,

Explaining What the Hell F-Stop Is, and How It Can Change Your Photography

F-stop is to photography beginners what inorganic chemistry is to an MFA graduate: some kind of black magic that only makes sense to experts. That said, I’m sure plenty of seasoned photographers use f-stop numbers without knowing what they really mean, too. But no more, because this video explains the concept in a way that makes complete sense.

To Ace an Interview, Forget Being Liked: You Just Need to Love Yourself

While self-confidence is definitely a route to job interview success, its often suggested that outright arrogance and narcissism is a real turn-off for employers. But a new study suggests thats not the case: interview performance doesnt depend on how much the interviewer likes you in the slightest, but just how much you like yourself. The research, carried out at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, suggests that narcissists innate tendency to promote themselves manages to get them jobs, regardless of whether the interviewers actually like them or not. Peter Harms, one of the researchers, explains to Science Daily:

Teacher’s aide fired for refusing to hand over Facebook password

A teacher’s aide at an elementary school was fired last year for refusing to give her Facebook login credentials to her supervisors, ZDNet reported on Sunday. In April 2011, Kimberly Hester signed on to Facebook while she was not at work and jokingly posted a picture of a co-worker’s pants around her ankles, with the caption “Thinking of you.” A parent and Facebook friend saw Hester’s photo and complained to the school. A few days later, the superintendent reportedly requested three times that she hand over her user name and password. Hester refused each time, and was put on paid administrative leave and eventually suspended as a result. She is now at the center of a legal battle with the school district, with arbitration scheduled for May. The House of Representatives last week shot down a proposed amendment to FCC legislation that would have prevented current and potential employers from seeking access to employees’ Facebook accounts.

Bump Pay Lets You PayPal Someone With A Tap, But Only In-Person | TechCrunch

Now it’s as easy as a fist-pound to pay a friend back for dinner, drinks, or a cab. Bump, the popular contact sharing app developer, today releases a new standalone iOS app called Bump Pay that lets you transfer money via PayPal to anyone in arm’s reach. But that’s also Bump Pay’s biggest limitation. Unlike Venmo where you send money to any phone number near or far, Bump Pay only works in-person.The standalone app comes from Bump Labs, Bump’s experimental wing for trying out new features. Rather than risk complicating its 84 million-install flagship app right away, the developer will only bring money transfers to all its users if Bump Pay generates traction and delight.
