Google’s New Cuban Tech Center Is a Symbolic Victory for Silicon Valley Elite

Silicon Valley has officially invaded Cuba. Cuban sculptor Alexis Leiva Machado, better known as Kcho, has helped Google open a small “technology center” in Havana that offers free internet via Chromebooks, complete with those goofy cardboard VR headsets.

The opening is a small but vitally important victory for both Google and the US State Department, both of whom would love to see US tech firms provide internet services on the island nation.

Brett Perlmutter, head of Google’s Cuban operations, has been courting the country along with other Google execs since at least June of 2014. Notably that was months before President Obama’s surprise announcement (a surprise to the American public, at least) in December of 2014 that the US would begin to normalize relations with the country.

The new technology center is opened to the press for a media event on March 21, 2016 (Associated Press)

As the Associated Press notes, the connection at the new Google “technology center” is provided by Cuba’s national telecom company. It wasn’t clear who financed the new high-speed fiber connection, though Kcho told the AP he paid for it himself without providing specifics.

Curiously, the new Google technology center also dons the logos of companies like Microsoft, Facebook, Instagram, and Apple’s Safari browser. The exterior of Kcho’s studio, which as been converted into a Google “technology center” (Associated Press)

Previously the US ran covert tech operations in Cuba, introducing “Cuban Twitter” from 2009 until 2012 with the aim of stirring a revolution. The messaging service, known as ZunZuneo (Cuban slang for a hummingbird’s tweet), was secretly financed by the US Agency of International Development and only became public after an investigation by the Associated Press.

But the State Department and Silicon Valley no longer need to force their way into the relatively isolated communist country. They’ve been let in the front door, thanks to the slow but significant normalization of relations with Cuba.

Google is still standing in the foyer, but they’ll no doubt be invited into Cuba’s dining room, basement, and bedroom in short order.

Darth Maul fan film: A good Star Wars prequel | BGR

Published this weekend, Darth Maul: Apprentice has apparently been in the works for two years. Just to put that into perspective, we hadn’t even seen a teaser trailer for The Force Awakens two years ago.On paper, Darth Maul should have been one of the coolest additions to the Star Wars universe in Episode I. Instead, he ended up falling somewhere between podracing and midi-chlorians on the list of “things we stopped caring about immediately after we left the theater.” He was underutilized and died like a sap.But we never got to see his backstory. What if his training has been just as intense and meaningful as Luke Skywalker’s, but on the Dark Side of the Force? That’s exactly what T7 Production wanted to explore in their short film:

Apple vs. FBI: iPhone hack and backdoor can’t be destroyed after use | BGR

iphone-fbi-backdoor

The FBI vs. Apple fight over an iPhone that had belonged to San Bernardino shooter Syed Farook will have huge implications for the future of the iPhone. The government says it only wants access to one single iPhone, and that it’s not asking Apple to create a backdoor into iOS that will give the agency a portal into every iOS device currently in use.

Even if that’s the case, Apple explained that carrying out the FBI’s request would not only be quite difficult, potentially affecting its primary business interests, but also nearly impossible to eradicate after it is used.

In its extensive document explaining why the FBI is wrong to ask for this access, Apple also detailed the laborious process of creating a unique GovtOS for the FBI. As many as 10 Apple employees would be distracted from other job requirements for anywhere between two and four weeks, possibly even longer, to deliver the operating system. Continue reading

Project Loon shows off autolauncher at work in Puerto Rico

With Project Loon, Google aims to provide wireless, high-speed internet to underserved areas like the entire nation of Sri Lanka. The team has figured out how to guide them around the globe using prevailing, high-altitude winds and the current design can stay aloft for nearly 100 days. To start delivering a service, Google just needs to get lots of balloons in the air, and that’s where the portable autolaunchers come in. First revealed last May, Google recently showed off how it launched a Project Loon balloon in Puerto Rico in just a half-hour using the 55-foot tall crane-like device.

A Shocking Number of Dogs in Shelters Are Misidentified as ‘Pit Bulls’

Using DNA analysis, researchers have shown that shelter workers frequently mislabel dogs as “pit bulls.” They say this is a serious problem given the social stigma surrounding the breed—which, technically speaking, doesn’t actually exist.

The new study, published in The Veterinary Journal, shows that animal shelter staff—and even some veterinarians—consistently misidentify dogs, particularly those classed as pit bull-type dogs. Much of this has to do with the fact that animal shelter staff are expected to guess the breed of dogs strictly based on physical appearance alone. And even when dogs are assessed at the same time, staff members often disagree on what breed it actually is.

“Unlike many other things people can’t quite define but ‘know when they see it,’ identification of dogs as pit bulls can trigger an array of negative consequences, from the loss of housing, to being seized by animal control, to the taking of the dog’s life,” said study lead author Julie Levy in a pressstatement. “In the high-stakes world of animal shelters, a dog’s life might depend on a potential adopter’s momentary glimpse and assumptions about its suitability as a pet. If the shelter staff has labeled the dog as a pit bull, its chances for adoption automatically go down in many shelters.”

There’s really no such thing as a purebred “pit bull,” which makes the findings of this study all the more problematic. The catch-all term “pit bull-type breeds” describes any dog derived from the heritage breedsAmerican Staffordshire terrier or Staffordshire bull terrier. The purebredAmerican pit bull terrier is also descended from these breeds, and is often included in the loose definition of “pit bull.”

Stop Windows 10 download? You only can prevent its installation | BGR

Microsoft will start forcing Windows 10 updates on machines that are eligible for the free upgrade as soon as this week. And you won’t be able to do much to stop it. Windows 10 is now a recommended update, which means it’ll download itself on Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 PCs and attempt to install.

DON’T MISS: The best new movies and TV shows that were just added to Netflix

“As we shared in late October on the Windows Blog, we are committed to making it easy for our Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 customers to upgrade to Windows 10,” a Microsoft spokesperson told The Verge. “We updated the upgrade experience today to help our customers, who previously reserved their upgrade, schedule a time for their upgrade to take place.”

In theory, there’s really nothing wrong with moving to Windows 10. Sure, there are some privacy concerns, but they can be mitigated. And you can definitely roll your computer back to the previous Windows version if the latest Microsoft OS doesn’t meet your needs.

But the fact that Windows 10 will begin downloading automatically on computers later this week might be annoying to certain users. For example, the bulky Windows 10 install files will take up a huge chuck of your storage space. Not to mention that the background download might lead to data overages if parts of the download happen over cellular connections. If you connect via 3G or 4G very often, you’d better turn off the automatic update download features on your machine.

If those are not problems for you, then the recommended Windows 10 should have no other negative impact on your Windows experience. You’ll be able to opt-out from the prompts if you’d rather not update to Windows 10 and keep using your older version instead.

Donald Trump: Apple will manufacture computers in the U.S. if I win | BGR

In light of Donald Trump’s utterly bizarre statements regarding his plan to “close off parts of the Internet” to terrorists, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the Presidential hopeful has a rather weak grasp of technology related issues. But on the off-chance that you gave Trump the benefit of the doubt, the outspoken business tycoon proved once and for all just how little he understands about technology in particular, and in a broader sense, the economic realities that govern mass production of consumer electronics. While speaking at Liberty University on Monday, Trump said that he would make sure Apple “builds their damn computers in this country” if elected President. Apple of course, not to mention most major hardware companies in the U.S., outsource the vast majority of their manufacturing to factories in China. Apparently the idea of non-Americans assembling iPhones, Apple Watches, and iPads doesn’t sit will with Trump’s grand vision to “make America great again.”
