Scientists Find New Genetic Link for Autism and Schizophrenia

Despite all the years of research that have gone into them, cognitive conditions like autism and schizophrenia are still largely a mystery. Heres one nice step toward figuring them out, though: Researchers from UCLA have discovered a specific genetic trait in a small community in Finland that might have some clues. There are communities in northern Finland that have been extremely isolated from the outside world for years. So many rare genes and genetic defects are more common in those populations. One in particular had a high rate of autism, schizophrenia, and other cognitive conditions. After examining data from 173 participants in that community, compared to 1586 from the rest of Finland, it was found that a chromosome 22 deletion was present in 18 of the 173 compared to just one in the larger sample. With a sample of 173, could the overrepresentation of this deletion be an unrelated manifestation of such a small genetic pool? In other words, are these just specific to the particular to the region? Its not likely, actually. Chromosome 22 deletion affects the creation of an enzyme called TOP3β, which helps translate DNA into RNA. Its still up in the air exactly how this works to disrupt brain development, but theres a clear link between TOP3β and conditions like schizophrenia and fragile X.RELATEDScientists Find First Definitive Genetic Links to AutismScientists have uncovered several gene mutations that sharply increase the chances of developing autism. Its the first time researchers have… Read…Theres still a long way to go, but this is good news, since every small step toward figuring this stuff out is good news. [Nature via New Scientist]

Google intros Android Device Manager to help you find that missing handset

Frequently lose your phone? Yeah, join the club. Don’t worry, Google’s got a fix. Android Device Manager will be available later this month for phones with 2.2 or later, letting you ring your phone at maximum volume when you can’t find it, even if the handset has been silenced. Should that fail, you can also locate the thing on a Google Map in real-time — and there’s also a plan C. When you’re all out of other options, you can securely erase all of your data from afar, so your Angry Birds scores don’t wind up in the wrong hands.

This Agricultural Breakthrough Makes Every Crop Self-Fertilizing

Weve been using nitrogen fertilizers to bolter crop growth since the neolithic era. But producing enough food for nearly seven billion mouths requires intensive farming farming practices that demand heavy applications of fertilizers. And their overuse is taking a heavy toll on the environment—an estimated $91 billion to $428 billion worth of damage in Europe alone.Until now, the ammonia and nitrogen oxide emissions from fertilizer plants and the massive aquatic dead zones downstream from farms caused by nitrogen runoff-fueled algae blooms have all been considered necessary evils in the name of agriculture, because pumping fertilizer into the soil is the only way to get plants their nitrogen fix. Except that now, a University of Nottingham researcher just figured out how to coerce every crop plant on Earth to pull nitrogen directly from the atmosphere. No fertilizer required.A building block of amino acids, proteins, and DNA, nitrogen is a vital nutrient for plants and animals alike. But unfortunately very few plants can absorb nitrogen directly from the air. They must wait for bacteria in the soil to convert it to ammonia and ammonium, a process known as nitrogen fixation, which they then absorb through their roots and convert back into nitrate for use.The few plants that can pull atmospheric nitrogen, specifically legumes like peas and beans, do so with the help of symbiotic cyanobacteria that perform the nitrogen fixation within the plant itself. And its this mutually beneficial relationship that Prof. Edward Cocking, director of the University of Nottingham’s Centre for Crop Nitrogen Fixation, has developed for the worlds crops. The technique, dubbed N-Fix, doesnt involve modification of the crops genome. It involves a specific strain of nitrogen-fixing bacteria commonly found in sugar cane that has no qualms about colonizing the cells of other plant species. Most of these symbiotic bacteria have evolved to live only in specific plants but Cockings bugs are happy to set up shop anywhere, including all of humanitys major food crops. N-Fix is applied as a seed coating, whereupon the bacteria penetrate every cell of the growing plant and impart their nitrogen fixing abilities. The university has been conducting proof of concept and safety studies for more than a decade now. It recently licensed the technology to Azotic Technologies Ltd which is conducting field trials for regulatory approval in the UK, Europe, USA, Canada, and Brazil. Theres no word yet on how long that will take—but once this method takes hold, its going to change the world.

Node Power Outlet Allows Users to Plug In At Every Angle | Apartment Therapy

360 degree turning electrical outlets have been around awhile, alongside pivoting and flexible outlet extension accessories, all addressing the issue of granting power and access to awkwardly situated outlets. But this design from Japan may be the most elegant and space efficient design Ive seen yet…MetaPhys of Japan has improved upon the traditional electrical outlet in every way.First, theres the handsome soft-edged square faceplate design, with a subtle LED light glowing underneath revealing when power is on and available. The dual grooves face looks great, but the utility the design offers is more impressive: dual prong plugs for electrical devices can fit in from every angle, offering the capacity of a powerstrip.

Florida’s Radioactive Fountain of Youth May Prolong Life

Five hundred years ago in June, the Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de Leon started his journey back to Puerto Rico from Florida after becoming the first European to land on mainland America. After exploring the east coast of Florida, he circled the peninsula and explored the west coast, including modern-day Charlotte Harbor (see map), most likely the location he chose for his second voyage.

According to legend, the explorer set out in search of the fountain of youth, a fabled stream that would extend the life of anyone lucky enough to drink from it.

Thanks to the myth of Ponce de Leon’s trip, Florida—known for its large population of retirees—is now awash in “fountains of youth.” Dozens of bodies of water claim the title of the one legendary fountain, from mineral springs to deep-water wells, not to mention water from a variety of sources that is piped into various built structures.

Only one, however, is known to be radioactive. And, oddly, it might be actually extending life.

In Punta Gorda, a town on Charlotte Harbor, a blocky, green-tiled fountain abuts an empty lot near the harbor. A spigot juts out near the top to release water from the artesian well below. Each of the four sides features a picture of a ship, a tribute to Ponce de Leon.

On the side facing away from the street, a public health notice warns that the water “exceeds the maximum contaminant level for radioactivity.”

The water from the well is also heavy in sulfates, which give it a distinctive smell of rotten eggs. This hasn’t stopped the locals from drinking from it regularly.

“I drank out of that well every day,” said Gussie Baker, a resident of Punta Gorda for all of her 78 years.

Baker used to live down the road from the Hotel Punta Gorda, whose guests would frolic in a pool filled with water from the same aquifer. Baker learned to swim in the pool and passed the fountain on her way to school.

“I love artesian water,” she said. Baker doesn’t live as close to the fountain anymore, but says she would drink it if she were nearby.

Punta Gordians proudly declared the existence of a rejuvenative fountain as far back as 1894. In 1926, they mounted a collection drive to pay for the stout little structure that stands to this day. At the height of its popularity, in the mid-20th century, the handle on the tap had to be replaced every six months.

The North Pole Is Now a Lake

If you think these images from the North Pole look more like a lake than the snow-covered expanse youd expect, that because it is is—the North Pole has melted. Its not, perhaps, quite as dramatic as it sounds. April saw the ninth heaviest snow cover on record measured in the Arctic, covering the Pole in more of the white stuff than its seen in a long ol time. But by May, temperatures increased and almost half the cover melted.Throughout July temperatures have been uncharacteristically high—up to 1-3°C higher than usual on July 13th, for instance—and the result has been an abrupt thaw of the snow cover that was left. These images, acquired from the North Pole Environmental Observatory, show the thaw in progress, between June 30th and July 25th.RELATEDÍgy lett alig 4 hét alatt hatalmas tócsa az Északi-sarkbólA 444-en olvastam, hogy pár nap alatt jókora tó keletkezett az Északi-sarkon. Akirály kolléga több forrásra hivatkozva azt írja, hogy Read…Its worth pointing out that this isnt the first time theres been a meltwater lake at the North Pole, nor is it the worst its also worth pointing out that this is just at the pole, and not across the entire ice cap. And we certainly shouldnt draw climate change conclusions from what is realistically one data point. But it should at least make us think about what were doing to the planet. [444 via Cink]
