The Future is Now: The Invisible Bicycle Helmet | Apartment Therapy

Bikes are a graceful, efficient mode of transport, but bike helmets, until now, have been awkward and clunky. Luckily Swedish design students Anna and Terese decided to improve the conventional design (and eradicate helmet hair forever) by inventing an invisible helmet. Want to know how it works?

Watch the short and stylish video for a huge surprise when they reveal the goods; I was absolutely floored. On a second viewing, I realized that the helmet had been featured throughout the video, I just hadn’t noticed (it is invisible after all).

I’m sold. Here’s hoping that these enterprising ladies can bring their invention to the US soon.

Lytro camera hands-on video — Engadget

You knew Lytro was up to something, but with its infinite focus light-field powered camera out of the bag, how does it actually stack up in real life? In a word: novel — you certainly wont be tossing your regular camera for this shooter, at least not in its current incarnation. Still the concept of shoot now, ask focus questions later is revolutionary, so hop on past the break for our initial impressions.Lytro camera hands-onSee more video at our hub!Right off the bat, youll notice its diminutive size. If were frank, we were expecting something more akin to a DSLR — visions no doubt conjured by the immense arrays used to do this sort of wizardry back in the day. Its small, beautifully made, anodized aluminum body reminds us of a cross between an iPod Nano and an iSight camera — inspiration that isnt only skin deep, as Lytros desktop software which youll need to open and export .lfp files is currently Mac only, with a Windows version in development.Functionally, its pretty simple to use. You manipulate the device via two buttons on its rubber coated end — one turns it on, the other snaps photos. Captures are seamless and instantaneous, thanks to its zero-lag focus, and zooming is a similarly painless affair controllable on the grooved line across the devices top. As for image transfers, theyre accomplished by connecting to a micro-USB port on its bottom — hidden behind a flap, of course.

We Can Save the World by Eating Bugs and Drinking Urine | Wired Science | Wired.com

It’s only a matter of time before Earth’s growing population faces a critical shortage of potable water. Luckily, science has a foolproof solution. A process called reverse osmosis can convert wastewater into H20 that’s as pure as the distilled stuff—even cleaner than what we usually drink. There’s just one problem: persuading people to drink liquid that used to be urine. After all, humans tend to pooh-pooh pun intended anything they find disgusting. That repulsion response evolved to help us avoid ingesting things that are potentially dangerous. Rotten food grosses us out for a reason. But if humanity is going to survive, we may have to learn to overcome the ick factor.University of Pennsylvania professor Paul Rozin nicknamed the King of Disgust has been examining this issue for decades. In a 1986 study, he asked students to drink a cup of juice and rate it. Once that was done he put a cockroach into a cup of the same juice, stirred it around a bit before removing it, and asked them to drink. The bug was dead, and he assured them that it had been sterilized. But not surprisingly, almost no one wanted a sip. In their mind, the cup was contaminated. So Rozin took a brand-new, clean cup and poured fresh, uncontaminated juice into it. This last cup of juice scored lower ratings. The repulsion was so intense that it tainted unrelated objects.

Microsoft reveals new logo after 25 years, proves that it’s (still) okay to be square — Engadget

Remember that time Microsoft teased what most sane humans thought were new logos? That was right around two years ago, but the branding you see above is no mistake — that’s the new Microsoft logo, landing just months after Windows 8’s new flag and merely weeks before the aforesaid operating system takes the planet by storm. Astoundingly, it has been a full quarter-century since Microsoft gave itself a new logo, and while we’re sure pundits will jump all over it just because “dealing with change is hard,” there’s no doubt that the outfit’s new face is bold in its simplicity. Care to learn more? There’s a happy-go-lucky video waiting just after the break.

Scientists Clear Path to the Fountain of Eternal Youth

Researchers at Johns Hopkins have discovered an efficient and totally safe method to turn adult blood cells “all the way back to the way [they were] when that person was a 6-day-old embryo.” The discovery could be the key to cure the incurable—from heart attacks to severed spinal cord to cancer—and open the door, some day, to eternal youth.

Scientists believe that stem cell therapy could change medicine forever. However, these therapies are impossible to implement on a large scale because you can’t acquire embryonic stem cells without having to use actual human embryos—an extremely controversial undertaking. The alternative has always been to use the stem cells found in umbilical cords—which is why rich people use umbilical cord storage facilities to guarantee future treatments for their kids—or use viruses to reprogram adult cells. These viruses can successfully return adult cells to their stem cell state, but the procedure opens the door to numerous complications as a result of potential DNA mutations. And those mutations could lead to cancer.

But this new method changes everything. To start with, it uses normal adult blood cells from the patient, so there’s not need to keep umbilical cords in storage. It also doesn’t use any virus reprogramming, so it’s completely safe. It’s also very efficient: researchers successfully transformed about 50 to 60 percent of adult blood cells into embryonic stem cells that can then be turn into any type of cell—a heart muscle cell, a bone cell, a nerve cell, anything.

Scientists Discover How to Disarm Superbug Bacterias

A drug-resistant superbug could be catastrophic for our species. How do you stop an incurable illness? By stunting it before it takes hold. Scientists have discovered a molecule that some virulent bacteria need in order to latch onto a host. They think they might be able to create a treatment that would render the molecule useless. Can we finally cross one doomsday scenario off our list of fears? In a study published in Chemistry & Biology, scientists describe how they managed to block Brucella from bonding with a host. While fever-inducing Brucella isnt the type of hyper-contagious bacteria that could sweep across the planet in a flash, everybody is vaccinated against it and some drug resistant varieties have cropped up. In order for the bacteria to latch on, the protein VirB8 needs to be present. Blasting the potential bonding site with other small-molecules was found to inhibit the effectiveness of the protein to assemble the bond.

Facebooks Updated iOS App Is Fully Native and Free of HTML5

Facebook just released its updated iOS app, which it says is twice as fast as before. The reason for the speed boost? Instead of serving as a container for HTML5 content, its now fully native.Among the improvements to the app is the ability to scroll faster in News Feed, access new stories and notifications without having to refresh, a nicer and easier to use photo UI, and Timeline profile pages for the iPad app. All are nice additions to an app many of us use with regularity. You can download it now in the iTunes store. [iTunes via The Verge]

Best Buy Wants You to Spend $1000 on a HDMI Cable

Best Buy, who must think that if people are silly enough to shop there, they might be a big enough sucker to get ripped off on HDMI cables, is offering a “diamond” “high-speed” 2-foot HDMI cable for the most ridiculous price of $940. What a steal!

What a criminal rip off. It’s a glitch, of course, but it serves as a good reminder for everyone: never ever splurge on any fancy pants HDMI cable even if it promises double rainbows, anti-virus protection or M-M-M-MONSTER-level output. Just spend a few bucks and buy cables on Monoprice orAmazonBasics. It’s all the same thing. [Best Buy via Reddit]
